“Gay Hotel?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

The Abbey advertises itself as a gay hotel but there really isn't any hint of gay life going on in the building compared to other gay hotels in the area. I had asked for a room with two beds when I booked plus an upper floor for a better view. At first we were taken to a small room with a double bed. I complained that wasn't what I asked for and the eventually moved us to a room with two beds. There is air conditioning however not even a small fridge. At over $ 100 a night for a two week period you would think they would have had a fridge. There was a table with four chairs but nothing like utensils so you could use the table.
The beds are really hard and not that comfortable. Where you see staff members from other gay hotels in the gay area you don't see anyone from The Abbey Hotel. One day I went down to use the guest computer and two young staff members were watching straight porn on it.. the location is good and the security is excellent.

My Dear Gymac:
I truly surprise that you had an impression that we are not a Gay Hotel, since I am GAY and we had change the concept of the Hotel sine 2006!!!!
You mention that you didn't see any Gay life in the Hotel, well everyone goes all day to the Beach, a block and half from our location, and after that pretty much everyone goes to a place around the block with plenty going on as a Gay activities, which it is hard on the guest, since it is a full time activities, bar, Jacuzzi, steam rooms, etc, and no rest for other guest that they don't wanted loud!! ALL DAY!!
As far as you requesting a room with two beds that it is never a problem since we have a lot of beds with two beds, and it may be that you wanted a room with two beds facing the ocean? well we don't have them and if you requested that no one could give you a confirm room with two beds facing the ocean!!
The situation we have small fridges for our guest and it is available since only our Suites have them and we never had offer them if you requested them and we have an spear one you will have it and since you were here for two weeks, I am almost sure we had one for you, did you ask for? we will had make one available for you!!
You mention about utensils for the table, well you didn't reserved a Suite with all those amenities, you had a plus with the table which only certain room have one to be exact six rooms have that table!!! you were lucky!!!
The beds, you know bed are a matter of a choice, some people like it hard some wanted soft!! and for that we have some foam to make it as soft it is possible, did you ask in the reception for it, or the Housekeeper? they know about all of this!! since it is matter of choice!!
Well my friend, I personally live in the Hotel and I am GAY very proudly and I work 7 days a week, and I get to know pretty much all of our guest!! Since you were here two weeks it is strange that I didn't get the pleasure to meet you!! and make sure that your stay had been with no issues and take care of this small incidents you encounter during your stay in Vallarta!!
We wish it was mention something about the situation with the staff using the computer they would had been fired since the computer it is mainly for use of the guest NOT the employees!!
We hope you give us another opportunity to make up for this incidents and enjoy a new adventure at the Abbey!!
Warm Regards from Sunny Vallarta!!

“2nd time staying at the Abbey”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

Stayed at the Abbey for 7-night in December. Returning to the Abbey Hotel is like staying with good friends. Sure it's not the most luxurious hotel, but they go out of their way to make you feel at home. You can't beat the location, it's close the the beach, bars within staggering distance, good restuarants both in the hotel and right around the hotel. I was traveling alone and had the small oceanview room. These rooms are okay, but some are connecting rooms and depending on who's in the next room, it can be noisey. I did ask to be moved into a larger king size room, but you lose the full ocean view. I had two concerns, the WiFi does need a boost. Works great in the lower floors, but not that good on the 5th or 6th floor. The other issue would be a small fridge in the single rooms. I did get a cooler with ice, but a mini fridge would be ideal. Otherwise the Abbey is perfect, plus no problems if you have an overnight guest (wink, wink)

Room Tip: Awesome sunset views from the west facing rooms.

“Excellent Price for a Clean, Basic Hotel Near Everything”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

Stayed at the Abbey for 12 nights over the Christmas and New Year's holiday 2011-12. I usually stay in fairly luxurious business hotels, but this was the only gay hotel I discovered in PV. I was pleased with the Abbey. It is a basic hotel. Not luxurious. Not modern. The beds are a tiny bit on the hard side and the furniture is dated. But it is extremely clean, roomy, a block from Los Muertos Beach and a few minutes walk from the gay Blue Chairs Beach Club. It is a 10 to 15-minute walk or a $3 USD (40-50 peso) cab ride from the most popular gay bars. There is a full-service laundry across the street and countless excellent restaurants in all price categories within blocks (Coco's Kitchen next door serves a great breakfast). The front desk staff is friendly and helpful. A few things to know: The wi-fi is unreliable, particularly in the rooms (though it usually worked in the lobby and there is free wi-fi at Dee's Coffee on the next block). There is sometimes a short wait for hot water at peak times -- other times, no wait. Contrary to the listing on Expedia, a breakfast buffet is NOT included in the room rate, and supposedly never has been. I consider these small negatives. I plan to stay there again. It's a good value. If you go, book directly on the hotel website. It's cheaper than through Expedia.

Room Tip: Call and ask. Some room categories have ocean views.

“Proxinity to the Beach and area restaurants”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 December 2011

Since this was our second time visiting PV we wanted to stay at a different hotel and try something new. The hotel is VERY BASIC witth no modern conveniences at all. The beds are HARD with no black out curtains for those late morning of sleeping in. The restrooms are SMALL with no counter space. The shower pressure is Incredible and is a must after a long day of being on the beach.

The LOCATION is PERFECT! 2 blocks away from the Beach and walking distance to all the restaurants. If you are looking for a hotel with a good location this is great.

Service was ok, front desk was nice and helpfull.

Room Tip: None, went from a room with two bed to purchase a one bedroom suite. Not worth it!

“Expensive, no breakfast, and bad service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2011

The owner refused to give invoices although we asked for them when we arrived and has been quite rude.
They could not take any credit or debit cards, we had to pay by Paypal... The prices in US$ are twice the prices in pesos to "deceit the gringos" (quoted from receptionist).
We had only one key for 3 persons. Once I had to go back alone without my friend and none could open the door.
Well the room is ok, but the service was awfull!!!
I will never go again!

My Dear Mexico City Traveler:
I am surprise that you mention that we were rude, about give Invoices to our guest!!!
If I remember correctly your situation was that your friend had pay the room and you requested that the invoice had to be in another persons name rather than the one who paid!! well since you are from our country you should know that it is impossible, and the person who pays it is the one who get the invoice, we never refused to produce them since it is our duty to provided Invoices for income to the Hotel!!!
As I recall you guys had Pay with a Credit Card, since Paypal, it is with credit cards, or Checking account, and yes we had an issue still going with Banks in Mexico who are telling us that they will change our terminal and had made an inconviniant situation to some guest but it is minor, since still you were able to paid with credit card!, Correct?
About the rates, as we know Vallarta it is a Resort Town and we have rates accordingly to the location and the services and we have promotions for our travelers from Mexico to be able to afford to come since it is with the cost of living to do that and we want to make possible to the community people to come and enjoy Vallarta as a National Resort destination!!
Now about the KEY, we have receptionist 24Hrs, and if you key gets lost we have to change the two locks ($100usd), and you will have to paid for, since we have a person taking care of any of you guys had left the key it here and not you did who some of your party left with the key and when the other two got here no key to open!!!
So I will assume that you are angry about the situation with the invoice, that you wanted for me to do something illegal, and mention all this minor issues that all the other happy guest will ignore!!
We do thank you for the review and have the opportunity to clear this situation for you and for the rest of the community!!
Still we will love to have you back and make sure that all this minor incidents get forgotten and you make sure you paid to get your invoice!!
Warm Regards from sunny Vallarta
