“nice location, plumbing woes”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

We stayed a week at the Tropicana. Originally reserved a king room but were put in a queen and single room. Turned out for the better, the smaller room had more features i.e.cable tv, a phone and ocean view. The first room had a leaking toilet. We called the desk, a house keeper was sent up, she looked at the leak and left to inform maintenance. We left for the day, only to find on return, the toilet all in pieces over the floor and counter. We went to the desk to ask to be moved and were told it would be fixed in 15 minutes. It was not. We had dinner reservations and needed the bathroom. After a few more calls and visits to the front desk we were moved. This room had a leaking tap and for some unknown reason the bathroom door refused to shut after a couple of days? We left a comment card at check out. The Tropicana was built, from the decor, probably in the fifties, and although they have spent much money and effort on the lobby, reception and pool areas, they need to upgrade the rooms to ensure all works well. The location is their forte, right on the beach, the restaurant and bar nicely set up and the service friendly and expedient. Quite a few nice lunches on the beach. I would stay here again knowing what to expect.

Room Tip: research online before making a decision.

“Horrible Place”

My second time staying in Tropicana and it was my last time.
The staff specially on front desks are very unfriendly people to deal with and also the Hotel manager she is very unfriendly.
So my advice to everyone don't stay where you cannot be treated the way you should be, specially if you pay top dollars for your stay.
Tropicana is not a great place to stay.

Room Tip: don't stay in Tropicana

“Loved the Tropicana”

Just back from a week in PVR. First time at the Trop. Great location and value. Superior room is a must, we had a corner room on the 3rd floor which faces south, didn't miss facing north at all. A smile and a " lovely lady do you have a nice room for us." does wonders for room designation at the desk. Recommend fidensios next door on the beach for f & b, cheaper and better. Just put the wrist bands in your pocket in case anyone asks which they rarely do. Trop is showing age but very clean. Only got wifi 1.5 dats out of 7. We will definitely be back.

“Room assignment is everything.”

I will start this review by saying I think that a lot of the reviewers are confused about which building is the new (superior) and the old (standard). The superior building is the one that is closest to the water. It is a separate building to the right of the main hotel as you are facing the water. Only 2 rooms on each floor of this building have direct (panoramic) views of the water and beach. The rest sit on one side of the building, or the other, meaning you can only see the beach in one direction. If you are unlucky enough to have one at the back of the building, and on a low floor, you will have very little view of the water.

My last stay I booked in this building. Had a beautiful view straight off the end of the building, and could see the entire beach. For this current stay, I booked the exact same room type, requesting the same room position. I know this is not always possible, but was hoping. What I ended up with was a room on the first floor, on the street side of the building. My view was of the construction site directly below, the street on the side, and a view of the water over the top of the construction. No view of the beach at all.

I went back to the desk, and asked to be moved up higher, and was told nothing was available in the "superior" room type. I asked for a room directly above the check in area in the old part of the hotel, and was told that I couldnt have one because I paid more for the superior. I wasnt asking for money back to be put in the older part, I just wanted a better view for my week long stay. The front desk clerk finally offered me a Jr. Suite on the top floor with a direct view of the water and beach for a $20 a night upgrade fee. It was well worth the extra money, and was a beautiful room.

When I checked out, I asked what type of room I should book next time to make sure I had a view directly out at the water. I was wondering if I should always book the Jr. Suite. I was told that I should book a standard room, as they are all in the old building and look directly out at the water. I am not sure how accurate that is, as I saw quite a few rooms that looked into the courtyard area, and also a lot that looked out the back of the building, without any windows at all. Maybe those are the "economy" rooms?

As for the bracelet, I have found that this is the norm in PV. I simply ask to have it on my ankle, so that it is not so apparent as to make me stand out. I also have found it pretty normal to not be allowed visitors in most any resort type hotel.

I talked with several guests who found that the drink and food service at the pool was lacking. I didnt have an issue with it, just thought I would mention it. All in all it was a very nice stay, and I will return, although I will call and do my best to make sure I get a room with a view directly out at the water.

The new pool is fantastic, and there was never a lack of lounge chairs or towels. As in any resort, there were the rude people who put out towels on them early in the morning though, and didnt return to use them until afternoon. A quick word to the security fixed this though. One lady returned to find me in her chair. She was upset. Ummmm, I have been here for 5 hours..... what makes you think you can hold a chair for 5 hours so that no one else can enjoy it?

Room Tip: Good luck. Some of the room type descriptions just dont make any sense.
