“Partial to Costa Pool Staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2011

We've been owners since 2002 - my in-laws have been owners much longer. We're actually here at Costa now - as I write - staying 2 wks in the Tower (one-bedroom suite) over Adobes. Our take? We love the pool staff! Lucy, Florencio, Luis...they're like family and we know we will be well-cared for by them. But yes - the hotel is not the ritz. While the elevators in this tower have (finally) been replaced, things are, well, old. Some of the rooms got a bit of a makeover, but only in the form of new slipcovers. The mini-fridges are hit or miss operation and our 2-burner stove top had to be replaced today because it shocked us everytime we tried to use it. But we love the water pressure in the shower (although we'd like a bit more room in the bathroom itself), and the suite is spacious (it's just 2 of us). The beds (at least in this bldg) were upgraded a couple years ago and are a little firm, but still decent. We have a beautiful view of the ocean and see some georgeous sunsets. Okay, now Gus Gus. Yup, they can be loud. Band starts around 8 - 8:30 and run to closing. The bands generally aren't fabulous, but it is a popular place, so don't expect changes there. We don't do the night life anymore, so we just resign ourselves to having to hear it every night. And as far as we know, there is no room in the hotel where you can escape it.

The pool area is one of the nicer ones on the strip (we all spend a lot of time out ther!) and Costa has a nice beachfront. We love that we can start shopping the minute we step out the front door!

It comes down to this. We'll continue to come to Costa, but not because it's a A-1 resort. We come because of the staff. It's not a new structure, but it's comfortable and for what we pay, we feel we're getting a good deal. But if we had to pay full-price hotel prices, we'd probably look at some place newer.

One quick note: It's a very tough economy down here right now, running 30-40% occupancy in local hotels/resorts. So of course they want to sell you something. You can always decline, but do expect you will get "invitations" on a regular basis. We just ignore them.

“This is a resort that is being driven to ruin by the owner”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2011

We have been timeshare owners since 1997 and in the lock-off suite since 2002. We own 4 weeks. This year the hotel was filled with a busload of young people who partied loudly and continuously from Wednesday afternoon until Sunday morning.

My complaints were met with apologies but no action.

In addition, the owner of the property held debauched parties in the "office" area on the first floor below our unit. This suite is passed by anyone heading for the beach or the restaurant and the doors were open.

These parties featured loud music, writhing girls and old men. There was obvious liquor consumption and equally obvious drug use. Not something I would expect in a "family" resort.

The hotel and restaurant staff are still wonderful, but they are powerless to deal with the issues caused by the owner.

We planned to stay 8 weeks this year but have cut our losses and are going home after 4 weeks.

My prediction is that the owner is on his way to ruining the resort and will probably lose it to his drug habit.

I don't think that we will be back.

“Not the worst, but will not return”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2010

We just returned from a week at the Costa de Oro, while the condo was roomy, it definetly needs upgrading.

The Good:
The waiters at the pool, Edguardo and Pancho, were great!
The bar type food (nachos, quesadillas, burgers, club sandwiches) were good. We ate inside the restaurant a few times, and other than those items mentioned, don't bother.
Location on the beach was great, beautiful sunsets.
Pool is nice, although the towels are ridiculously old, and the pool needs more regular cleaning.

The Bad:
Time Share: At check-in we were accosted by the information lady pressuring us into a sales presentation. No we weren't actually accosted, but it felt like it. We had been traveling all day and just wanted to get to our room, perhaps see the sunset, get some food. Instead, we had to have a sales pitch. We finally caved in to the offer of $100 (US) to spend at the resort, the City Tour for 4, and breakfast the next morning, promised that it would no more than 90 minutes. We were very clear with her, and again with the sales rep the next morning, that we were not going to be purchasing a time share, but what the heck, $100 worth of drinks, and a tour we were going to actually pay to go on anyway. Needless to say, it was all a joke. After spending more than 90 minutes with the representative, we declined to discuss "prices" with him, although he had just spend an hour writing down lots of numbers for us. Since we declined to discuss "prices" we were not eligible for our $100 or free tour. Not a great way to start your trip - needless to say, we were in a bad mood.
The front desk staff is not very friendly or helpful, and they don't speak very good english. The information desk is not that at all, but people trying to sign you up for the sales pitches. It was a bit disconcerting to be in a foreign country and not having anyone you could ask for advice regarding activities or restaurants, as they were just trying to sell you something. If you do need anything, ask the bartenders at the pool or the tour representative in the lobby.
The noise - the nightclub Gus Gus was ridiculously loud, and seemingly piped right into our room. The windows were worthless. Hardly got any sleep while we were there.
Housekeeping was not at all thorough. The floor was never clean, and I don't think the sheets were ever changed.
The furnishings are very old, and very uncomfortable. The TV was in the bedroom, not the living area. Wierd.
Outlets and lights didn't all work.
Internet service - what a joke. They charge you, and you can only get very slow connection at the pool or in the lobby. In our room, we could find all the surrounding hotel's wireless, but not Costa de Oro's.

We did enjoy the sunshine Mazatlan offered, but the time share hassles (inside the hotel and on the streets) really are a negative for the City.

“Going Down Hill”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2010

The hotel is in a great location. Our stay was in one of the condominiums. While very clean, the furnishings are long overdue for refubishment. The lamps were so bad you had to worry about getting a shock from the wiring. The beds were comfortable in our room, but we heard complaints about how hard they were from other guests. The refrigerators was a tiny under the counter model which barely kept anything cold. The two burner stove often didn't heat well or only one burner was working. The air conditioning in the unit we were in blew, but did not cool down, and was not fixed even after a week. There were new bedspreads, but the couches, etc., were not very clean and have the same upholstery that they had when we first started staying there in 1994. Many of the owners went to the orientation just to complain about the poor quality they were getting for their money. Management was only interested in people upgrading their ownership or buying more weeks, with the same promises as before.
