“nightmare from hell”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2006

upon arrival, I found an old, extremely run-down building
with one person working. He could not find my reservation and
then put me in a temporary room. I should have known right
then and there something would be drastically wrong! Since,
I had been emailing for the past 2 months. The room was
scarey, dark, bugs, old furniture falling apart with a hard bed
but I had no place to go. In the morning they changed my room
to a larger one, also deteriorated, broken up walls, fixtures,
run down kitchen area, no drainage in tub or sink, etc. In fact, I
found a notice under the door, the place was being fumigated- But,
the worst part is that this 'hotel' whicfh is apparently somehow
an RCI timeshare has absolutely no security. Although a man
generally is around the so called lobby; when I returned from
dinner, I went into my room only to find a man on my balcony!!!!
It was dark and I saw his shadow, then he coming towards me!
It turned out he was the apparent security and was ready to
attack but luckily for me I dialed for help and quickly left but I
am still unable to sleep and had the worst vacation of my life.
PS avoid Mazatlan at all costs - it is old, dirty, deteriorate and
ugly!

“Fading Splendor”

Balboa Towers has impressively huge rooms, all facing the ocean. The suite and the balcony take up one half of the entire floor. The sunsets are spectacular. That is the best that can be said about the place. The lobby is presentable. The place appeared clean. The 1 bedroom suite we occupied was lacking maintenance. The curtains were off their hooks, the bathtub had been painted and was peeling. It did not drain, so we stood ankle-deep in our shower water. The TV and the phone did not work. There was no drinking water in the room. These small items were corrected when we made a list of deficiencies. The kitchen had a bare minimum of cutlery and dishes. The salt and peppershakers did not have a grain of salt or pepper, no filterpaper for the coffe maker. There was no dish soap, even when we asked. The stove was some replacement 2- burner gas contraption, we were afraid to use. So much for having a kitchen. We were not willing to purchase these very basic supplies for a 1 week stay. I pity the owners of these units, they get no maintenance for their fees. Some of the owners have told me that the hotel has gone down a bit more year after year. The elevators were very pokey and I wonder when they were last inspected. I'd say stay away.

“Large rooms”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 April 2006

We stayed at Balboa Towers for one week with my daughter and 3-year old grandson. It was so noisy that my daughter had to move the mattress from her room into ours because her bedroom faced the street. That back bedroom gets a tremendous amount of noise! The countertops in the kitchen are terribly stained, the faucets have a build-up of crust around them, the tile in the bathrooms is black in 70% of the grout. I bought clorox & splashed it around before I could use it. There is an awful sewer smell that comes up in the bathroom vents. It took forever to get hot water & sometimes it came out brown. The water to flush the toilet was brown all the time. The furniture coverings & bedspreads are threadbare. The elevator worked 40% of the time and we were on the 15th floor. Twice they couldn't offer us beach towels because they ran out & the lounges (if you could get one) at the beach were broken and the little tables were either filthy dirty or stained so bad you wouldn't want to touch them.

“Love "Mexico Time"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 July 2005

Have stayed at Balboa Towers twice and love it! Think of the US in the 50's and 60's -- less regulations, knowing your neighbors and stopping to talk with them, not rushing around but taking time to see the designs in the sand, the shells, the sunrise and sunset, and riding in the back of a pickup. Yes, you need to watch where you walk because of chipping concrete and the elevators don't always work, but we are in Mexico and on Mexican Time, so lower your blood pressure and take things as they come. The balcony views are spectacular, the ocean relaxing, and the staff so helpful. The 2 bedroom units are huge with plenty of closets, the stove works to boil the fresh shrimp, and the refrigerator cools the shrimp, fruit, and adult beverages, the coffee pot brews, and the microwave nukes -- what more could you want? We feel too many updates would take away the "feel" of being in another country and having some adventures.
