This is a good, clean, pleasant choice if you are travelling through Saltillo and just need a place to stay. It is an godsend if you are travelling with a dog!
The rooms in this hotel were very nice and very clean, I’d describe them as combination between 1) an upscale version of a travel motel (like Hampton) and 2) a business hotel (like a Radison). We paid 991 pesos for the night. We had a crate for our dog, but they did not seem to be very concerned about the crate. They also mentioned that in most cases when people travel with their dogs that the dogs are very clean and they have rarely had a problem. Hurrah! This is quite unusual in Mexico, but I suspect that competition for hotels is quite tight in this town and they need to do something to distinguish themselves. The hotel was near empty the night we stayed there.
The hotel is on the Monterrey-Saltillo Cuota road and is on the north side of Saltillo. If I remember right (its been a couple months), as you are coming into town, the highway turns to the left and you start to see a greater density of businesses on the road. The American Hotel Express will be on the right side of the road—you need to go slowly enough so you can read the signs or else you will pass it. There is a gate/guard house in front and then a series of two story brick buildings. If you pass the monument to Carranza (in the middle of the road) you have gone too far.
The address is:
American Hotel, Express. Carretera Monterrey-Saltillo No. 9000, Saltillo, Coah. C.P. 25015. Telephone: (844)438-8800 or 438-8808.
For people traveling with well-behaved dogs this is a great hotel. It is very clean and very tasteful, much nicer than I expected. It's not a beautiful location, but it’s all you need if you are travelling through for the night.
We note that there seems to have been changes in the names/ownership of some of the properties that are listed in Saltillo. While planning a long drive through Mexico, we tried to locate some of the various Holiday Inns listed here and on other forums since they were reputed to allow dogs, but we had problems finding them.
For example, when we got to Saltillo, I tried to find the equivalent of the Holiday Inn Ramos Arizpe and after a couple visits to different hotels, found that this hotel is now named the American Hotel Express, and they very gladly take dogs. The American Hotels Express does not show up in guidebooks because it was recently (within a year they told me) bought from Holiday Inn.
Note too that there are hotels with similar names that DO NOT take dogs: The American Hotels SUITES and the American Hotels EUROTEL. The Eurotel is further south (along the same road) from the Express and formerly was a Holiday Inn as well. If you go to this hotel by accident note that they WILL NOT tell you that the American Hotel EXPRESS does allow dogs. I went there first and asked for a recommendation for a place that takes dogs and they said that they did not know of anywhere. I found that strange since they seem like they are related to the EXPRESS.
