“Eclectic interiors, fabulous staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 December 2007

This is an ideal place to stay in Tijuana, especially if you're looking to get away from the vulgarity of Revolucion.

A hotel from the San Ysidro border crossing costs $8-10 (settle on a price with the driver before you get it) and the hotel is hard to miss - two huge mirrored towers.

The interior design is eclectic to say the least - classic 70s postmodern hotel design: a little bit camp; a little bit sci-fi. There are several restaurants and bars, a small, vaguely eerie shopping mall - with a cosmetic surgeons office, of course. The standard rooms were comfortable, but unexceptional, with free, fast wifi and Mexican and US network and cable TV.

What made this hotel special, though, was the staff. All spoke excellent English and were friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable especially - if you generally take an interest in local culture. Staff dropping by the rooms late afternoons with chocolate was a nice touch, too.

Worth mentioning also is the Grand Bistro serving fantastic Mexican and fusion food at great prices, with wonderful staff who made us feel at home.

“Nice hotel in quiet area”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2007

We needed a place to stay in Tijuana prior to flying out from the Tijuana airport the next day. We arrived on the day the fires started and they turned off the AC in the San Diego trolley about 2 stops from the border. When we crossed the border, ash was landing on us. It was about a $10, 5 minute cab ride to this hotel and about a $15, 15 minute cab ride from this hotel to the Tijuana airport. There were plenty of cabs waiting at a cab stand at the hotel and there was a list of prices for various destinations near the front door.

We selected this hotel based on the reviews and were not disappointed. It is a building with two tall towers. It was a nice clean, large room, full toiletries in the bathroom, clock radio, TV with lots of channels, and a small golf course in the back. It seemed fairly quiet when we arrived on a Sunday. There was some event in the meeting room area in the lobby but it ended fairly early at night. The front desk staff all spoke English and both check-in and check-out were quick.

We paid a few dollars extra to be on one of the executive floors and it was worth it. You get access to a very nice lounge on the top floor which is sort of like an airline lounge. There is a reception desk/concierge, an area of tables and chairs, excellent views, a flat screen TV, a couple of computers, and a bathroom. There was a reception at 6-9PM where you get one free glass of house wine and cake or some seafood items (not worth waiting around for). But you also get a free breakfast of cereal, coffee, fruit, and rolls and you can just hang out up there and watch TV or enjoy the views. There were also a couple of computers there. This lounge was fairly empty both times we visited it.

In the lobby, there was a restaurant and a small bar, as well as a separate room with a bunch of TVs and a race book.

The room and hallways could use new carpeting, but that isn't a big deal. I was afraid in the morning that there wasn't any hot water but it was just a matter of waiting a minute or two.

It is not an area of tourists and not a place to stay if you are looking for nightlife or souvenirs. It is more of a quiet area with a Carl's Jr., sub shop, and OXO convenience store nearby (good place to get sodas or snacks, and it was open late). That has its advantages--no vendors calling out to you, no noise, and we felt safe. We were on a high floor and it was perfectly quiet. I'm sure that a cab to Avenida Revolucion would be quick and inexpensive.

There is an EXCELLENT Argentinian restaurant immediately across the street from the front door. If you like steak or meat, you will like this place. It was jam packed when we arrived, always a good sign, but service was quick and food was very tasty. We had the best meal of our vacation at this restaurant. It is worth staying at this hotel just to be able to eat at this restaurant but you will not enjoy it if you avoid red meat.

  • Disliked — Not much interesting nearby

“The Grand was grand!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2007

I have just returned from Mexico, Baja California and had a wonderful time. A couple of us took a trip to Ensenada and Tijuana just to take a road trip. I had heard horrible stories about the hotels in Mexico and even a friend was scared to travel with us, so we were a little skeptical.
We did not have reservations and everything was booked, we were lost and took a gamble and we hit the jackpot. We were driving around after we came from the El Camino Real Hotel, which was very expensive. The Grand is very nice, 5 star hotel with a golf course, pool, jaccuzzi and gym. It also has several restaurants.
The room was big and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom was very well decorated. The water pressure was very strong, plenty of towels. They were also kind enough to provide a fold up bed.

“Great hotel in so-so location”

I was on business in TJ and stayed 1 night here at the recommendation of the local office. The hotel is beautiful inside. There were ALOT of people milling around with a conference, but it did not feel crowded. Check in was reasonable efficient (10 minutes). Room was large and clean with a typically hard Mexican bed. Plenty of english/US tv options and most staff speak English.

There are several dining options in the hotel and the breakfast buffet was GREAT. There is also a shopping center across the street and some other dining options there as well as a liquor store.

There was no internet connectivity in my room and no in-room movies (didn't bother me, but a surprise for a hotel of this size). The ATM in the hotel was out of service, and I did not feel comfortable venturing out at night to find one.

This was my first visit to TJ and I will stay here again on my next visit. As a comparison, I have stayed at the "Presidente Interconential" in Guadalajara several times and this hotel is just as nice!

  • Liked — Clean and large rooms. Great breakfast buffet with lots of fresh fruit and mexican specialties.

“Lower your expectations”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2006

The Grand Hotel is a fair value for the money but don't confuse it with a typical luxury hotel. The best way to describe it is a clean but unremarkable "Holiday Inn" of the 1980s. Service is inconsistant. The staff is mostly friendly and helpful but lacks training. If you want concierge service you need to work hard to find the info that you want. Room decor needs updating but is acceptable. My standard king on the 28th floor was average in most respects. The bathroom was small but clean. The amenities were minimal. This is no 4 or 5 star business hotel.
The TV was a 10 year old 19 in. Clothes hangars were "secured" like a Motel 6. No exhaust fan in the bathroom.
Someone's old tie was found under the ottomon. The pool and gym were clean and spartan. The Lobby bar was nearly empty in the evening but the band played loud enough for a concert of 10000 people. Jacuzzi closes at 9PM. Good breakfast buffet and good high end prime rib restaurant but nothing special or memorable. No ice machines or vending. Adjacent to a golf course and decent restaurants nearby. Located in an office building mall with some shopping and food court fare. If the place were sold to Westin and remodeled from top to bottom it could easily be an impressive 5 star hotel...but, alas, it is merely better than average by Mexican standards but ranks below a typical roadside Marriott. You check out thinking that the $104.50 you spent per night should have paid for something more than you got. I'd stay again but only if I found a room rate lower than $75. Tijuana has no authenic First Class-5 Star hotel and only four "best" high quality places and this is one of them.
Like so much in Mexico is has loads of potential but just doesn't quite make it to a level of premium execution.

  • Liked — Modern with good views
  • Disliked — Always just missed the mark
  • Tips/Secrets — Maybe the club level floors are better?
