“The hotel from hell”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 July 2004

We returned yesterday from a 3-night stay over the July 4th, 2004 weekend at what used to be one of the nicest hotels in San Felipe. What a depressing experience, since we have been going down there for over 22 years. The hotel has fallen into such a horrible state that it literally made us more and more depressed each time we returned from a trip into town. The main pool was filthy and could not be used, although it was packed with kids and others more adventurous than us. The side pool was slightly better but lacked lounge chairs and any services. Our room had a great view, but that's it: roaches in the bathroom, stains on the carpet, etc. The hallways were filthy and the grounds unkept. The bathrooms were always horrible and we expected that; but it seems that everything else has also deteriorated.

All of this misery came for $100/night. An utter joke.

We never used to eat at the hotel and didn't do so this time, but based on the reviews it sounds as though the restaurant is just as bad as the rest of the facilities.

San Felipe itself has also changed. It is no longer the sleepy fishing village where you feel safe and carefree. Policemen loaded into pickup trucks were placed all along the malecon. They also were driving all though the town with their lights on. It felt more like a Nazi police state and we were just waiting to be pulled over for some non-existent traffic infraction. The fish tacos were still good, however, as was the food at El Nido steakhouse and George's. In fact, those 2 establishments seem to have withstood the test of time; but the rest has certainly fallen into a terrible state.

Given the long drive, "in your face" police presence, lack of good hotels and generally horrible state of the town, San Felipe and the Hotel Las Missiones (now called the "Mansion at San Felipe" -- hysterical) all seem to need a serious facelift. It is Cabo from now on or forget it.

What restaurant? Oh there is a restaurant & bar but it's always closed. there seems to be only one waiter working around the pool. On our first night there this guy went out of his way to please us but that's only because we tipped him over 60%. On our second day, he took our order without giving us a priced-menu then charged us whatever he wanted to which was way over priced ($20 for three burritos). The manager was nowhere to be found. The rooms appeared to be decent at first. our last night there i woke up with a worm the size of a catapillar on my bed. Forget about the showers in your bathroom, you're better off using the one down by the pool. Overall, don't be fooled by what you see on their website.

“Do not eat at their restaurant...”

Las Misiones Hotel is an adequate, no-frills place to stay a short distance from the Malecon area. The rooms are clean but the bed was too stiff for my liking. The water pressure is a joke & our tub was disabled so that we could only take showers. The hotel is on the "beach" but you'll be quite disappointed when the tide is up. At this time of year (April 15-19) the tide goes out for at least a 1/4 mile until 10 AM-ish. It comes in very quickly (within a half hour), and stays in until 7 PM-ish. With the tide in, there is only about an acre of usable sand/tanning area. This area is only available by walking to the far south end of the hotel area, climbing a 4 foot wall and then climbing down large, jagged rocks. That description does no justice to how horrible it truly is, but if you want to live on the edge, that's how we got to the sand. Good news is that the main pool is fairly nice.
The lounge chairs aren't aren't exactly comfortable & some have broken planks, but not really a big deal. There is a second pool but it was littered with leaves & sand. We found the restaurant service throughout San Felipe to be pitifully horrible but La Terraza at Las Misiones was by far the worst. Except at the taco stands, where you will be served almost immediately, expect to wait some time for your waiter to get to taking your order. Make sure you order a couple of beers while you wait for the food because he won't be back for a while... even when you wave him over or yell out to him. We went to Rice & Beans, Bajamar & Rositas and each had equally horrible service. If you can handle it, it's pretty funny to watch the gringos blow fuses expecting service like we are used to in the U.S. Anyway, as bad as that may seem, La Terraza had EVERY table's order wrong. They took over an hour to deliver food to the tables & never showed up with ours before we decided to make the drive into town instead... and all we ordered was a cold ham sandwich, soup and a fruit salad. At the other restaurants, the root of their service problems was that they were understaffed. La Terraza had too many waiters for the number of people dining but only one of them was actually working/taking the brunt of customer complaints. Lucky guy didn't speak a word of English. If you book thru El Dorado Ranch/Red Lobster, they will send you a map that shows the street name, but the streets have no signs so that doesn't do very much good. The best way to find it is by taking the "Aeropuerto" exit from the traffic circle when you enter town. Follow that road a couple of miles until you see "Last Stop Mini Market" on the right (the sign is lit all nite). The next left will have a large billboard for Playa Club. Turn left there.
Go to the end of that short street & turn left again. It's the only entrance to the right. In a nutshell, Las Misiones is adequate if you're going to be out in the town & just need a place to sleep & shower. We made a good time out of the 5 days we were there & I'm sure you can all do the same. Have a nice trip!!!

“The dumps”

This hotel was the best in the 80's. It is really bad now. I strongly suggest that you find another hotel. The rooms smell and are very dirty and the service sucks. The hotel is far from the party life and at night the drve can be dangerous, the road curves alot and it is very dark. This is the worst hotel in san felipe.
