“Great little place!!!”

Me and my girlfriend stayed at La Fonda this pass weekend (12-16) and yes the place is old and rustic, but that is the beauty in it. It’s not a Hilton so if that is what you’re looking for this is not the place for you. It’s for the people looking for something different. So getting to the room (# 20) there are no key card it’s a key, something everyone is not used to. Walking in the room it is like old Mexico theme with a fireplace and the bed is looking at the ocean. The bathroom is something I would want in my home you step up into the bathroom big windows, a bathtub you step down into just beautiful. The view was something to die for. We may it there just in time to see the sunset then a walk on the beach collected some sand dollars, it was a little cold but nothing a jacket couldn’t fix. After that we went up to the restaurant for dinner. The menu is on a very unique again very old Mexico; waiter was very nice and made sure everything was just right. They have blankets on the back of your chair just in case it gets to cold. The food was very good. The steak needed to be cooked a little more and they had no problem doing so. After dinner we walk to the store not very far from the hotel to get some drinks and returned to the room. We took some wood with us just incase the wood there was wet from the rain but that wasn’t the case either so we got some from the hotel as well. We slept with the door open and with the fireplace on and it wasn’t cold at all. They do have a portable heater in the room in case it gets too cold, but that was not a problem. Its nice to go somewhere for a romantic weekend and be on your own there is not a lot of rooms around you and you are for the most part secluded except for the one room right under you witch no one was in. As far as BED BUGS there were no issues with this, the place is OLD but not dirty it was VERY CLEAN. We did have some mosquitos but nothing that bug spray wouldn’t help. You can tell that La Fonda take pride in the hotel. I don’t sleep much because I work night shift so I was up very early. Watch to sun come up on the water and once my girlfriend woke up we had a walk on the beach. We walked up to the restaurant for some breakfast but it wasn’t open yet once again not a big deal. A lady asked if we were waiting to eat and we said yes, she let us in even though they didn’t open for another 30 min. A waiter came and asked if we wanted coffee, we ordered a bloody Mary and a coffee and sat a looked out at the water till they were ready to take our order. We watch the dolphin in the ocean playing and the waiter said that they are always there. Breakfast was great, they have a great coconut syrup for there pancakes that is to die for.
All in all this place is for people looking for something different not your everyday hotel. Its one of Baja Mexico hidden jewels. No bed bugs, it’s not over price, maybe next time if you’re looking for a Hilton stay at one. I will stay here again with no hesitation.
Thank you La Fonda for a great weekend and see you soon again.

Room Tip: Room 20 was very nice

“Eclectic layout - incredible views”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 December 2011

First off - La Fonda is not in Rosarito, it's in La Mision which is south of Rosarito (between Ensenada and Rosarito).

My wife and I ate there a couple days ago for lunch (Dec/2011). We both had seafood (fish for me, shrimp for my wife). The portions are generous and the taste was acceptable. Nothing fancy here. We didn't expect much for the price (both meals were under $10).

La Fonda is worth visiting for the ambiance. The restaurant is large. The decoration is rather eclectic with collections of various memorabilia. It's cozy. We sat at a table next to a fireplace (which was nothing more than a hole in the wall). Different. But nice.

The best thing going for the place is the scenic views of the Pacific. Incredible. When the weather permits, sitting outside on the terrace overlooking the sea would be hard to match.

As other reviews mention, the place is not entirely clean. The walls and ceilings are a little dirty. Much of the furniture is run down and old. There was a live rooster running loose on the terrace. This is of course Mexico and if you're surprised by this sort of thing, it's probably due to very little familiarity with the country and its culture.

Overall, the place is worth visiting. The food and drinks are inexpensive (despite the presence of so many Americans) and appear to be presented moderately well. In comparison to other local options, this place ranks higher than most.

“BED BUGS!!!”

Do not stay here, my girlfriend and I got completely worked over by bed bugs. I'm nervous that the infestation was so bad that I brought them home with me, I think I am getting fresh bites; not sure but it's kind of freaking me out...never experienced anything like this.

A shame, we used to love this hotel. I didn't even mind the "lack of upgrades." I like rustic. But bed bugs are simply a deal breaker. We stayed in a cabana over Thanksgiving weekend. We were planning to go back for New Years, not anymore.

There is a picture of the family that owns the hotel over the check-in desk...they seem like a nice looking family, they need to get in there and at the very least fixed the bed bug issue.

La Fonda takes great care to assure our guests a pleasent and healthy stay. In regards to the issue of bed bugs I do not think you had an issue of bed bugs. We have the property sprayed by a reputable pest control company on a regular basis and also vaccuum the beds because we know people like to take advantage of our beautiful beaches and where there is sand there are sand fleas which are sometimes brought back from the beach. We do everything we can to keep our rooms clean and in top condition. We do hope you will continue to frequent La Fonda Hotel, Restaurant, Spa.

“great location but needs some upgrades”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2011

I participated in a wine tour of the vineyards in Ensenada and as part of the 3 day tour we stayed at La Fonda. The view, the water, the beach and the buffet were all of my favorite things about this hotel. It is definitely run down and needs some upgrades. My room had a great view and a big patio but it was cold and the fireplace wasn't providing much heat. The complimentary wood was wet and difficult to light. The rooms are pricey for the quality, I would prefer to stay somewhere else in the same area or rent a house instead of pay the bloated rate they charge here.

Room Tip: Although the beach front bungalows have a nice view it is dangerous to walk down the run-down stairs...

“My favorite hideout in Baja”

I have been here several times and I can't get enough. I love the atmosphere, the view, the memories, everything. The rooms are not fancy by any means but they are clean and comfortable. The ocean views are simply amazing. If you are a young, adventerous traveler, I highly recommend this place. Be careful with those margaritas, they're the strongest Ive ever had, and I like to drink! I can't wait to go back.
