If you are looking for a luxurious five-star resort, Coco Cabanas is not for you. BUT if you are looking for an affordable, clean, convenient spot to park while you explore Loreto, this is a sure bet!
We stayed in the "old" cabanas....the smaller units that ring the lower pool. We also toured the brand new, two story units, which also ring a pool above. They are gorgeous, and if we were travelling with more people we would choose them. The upper pool is surrounded by cabanas and palms, and is protected from wind. The buildings are low enough to allow sunlight to the pool up until about 4:30pm, but high enough to keep out the wind....the perfect combination.
The cabanas are about two blocks off the beach and walking distance to just about everywhere, the Malecon, the town square, restaurants, fish markets, the Isste, etc. The owner, Stephen handed us a map upon check-in that identified all shops and restaurants, gas stations, etc. He helped us reserve a car, told us when whales were spotted on the Pacific side, gave us the language and instructions to do tasks like the locals and could answer any question we had about the area, customs, shopping, sight-seeing, you name it.
Important to know about Loreto: December through March are windy months, though sunny and around 73 or 74 degrees. Some of the hotels (especially the nicer ones) are right on the Malecon or beach. They are absolutely buffeted by the wind and their pools are on the water side as well. Because of the natural eastern exposure of Loreto, some hotel pools situated like this lose sunlight by about 1:00pm, and no sun combined with wind makes for a cold poolside. There is also an unfortunate sewer smell (because of the placement of sewer vents) near the Malecon that affects hotels situated there. After walking all over town and seeing the different hotels we had seen on the web, we were even more pleased with our choice of Coco Cabanas.
Top notch service, clean and comfy, great local direction and insider advice, terrific location.....We will stay there again soon, and often!
Room Tip: Older cabanas at lower pool have full kitchen and either one or two beds. These have showers, no tub...
