“Beachfront on a Budget”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 June 2011

The Desert Inn Hotel in Loreto offers "comfortable" accomodations for someone planning to fish the Sea of Cortez. The hotel is situated on the beach about 100 yards walk from the water's edge where you can greet your "panga' at the crack of dawn for an awesome day's fishing.

The rooms are modest, air conditioned and clean. The pool area was inviting with a beautiful view of the bay. We had 13 guys in our group ages 18-56. After fishing in the morning, we congregated by the pool with fully stocked coolers to share our fish stories and enjoy some mexican appetizers served by the hotel.

The hotel is at the north end of town (ten minute walk to the centro). From the airport, it's a 10-15 minute cab ride.

For a group of guys looking for a great base camp for fishing Dorado, Yellowtail and other sportfishing species, you can go wrong with the Desert Inn.

“Know before you go...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 May 2011

It's always best to know before you go....and we did do our homework before booking at the Desert Inn. Having traveled at various price points we were on the cheap this trip and knew that the Desert Inn was aging and seemed to be the cheapest deal in town. Having said that, the grounds are meticulously maintained and the view is out to the Sea Of Cortez where the sun rises; which were beautiful and we appreciated that in the afternoon we could sit on our terrace without battling the sun. Upon our arrival we were given an upgrade, which had us wondering what we were supposed to get, ( must have been the Hacienda's which are cheaper and must be smaller). The room was good size, clean and air conditioned. It had NO SAFE and the office did not have one either but they would hold something for you. There was no clock, and although no mini frig, or other amenties, we weren't expecting any. We read on TA that not all rooms had hair driers but ours did. The pool was by far the best we saw in all of Loreto; great for spending the afternoon poolside and soaking up the sun. The problem was that there were so few guests it seemed like a ghost town. The few guests that we met during our five night stay also felt that the lack of guests was ackward. Although staff met our routine requests and we don't have a single complaint, there wasn't anything special about the service either. They keep the large restaurant open where you can get a drink, but we limited our dining to a couple of breakfasts and lunches; again fine but nothing to write home about; it felt odd eating in a place where there are no customers. We really preferred to eat in town which was an easy walk either down the malecon or more directly to the town square; take Davis Street to the left once you walk out of the entrance. It's several blocks but it gives a snap shot of those who live in Loreto. This does put you at the town square; in the right kiddie corner is the bank and ATM.
Once you hit the square you can go to your right where you will find an arch of greenery past the church and find things for sale. But if you take the path past the hotel headed straight toward the street you will find our favorite restaurant; La Pangalapa. It's open air and it has the BEST tacos ever... the fish tacos were good but my favorite were the shrimp. One of our dining companians had the octupus tacos and they were excellent and the clam tacos were very popluar. The staff were friendly and accomadating; between their broken English and our broken Spanish, we had a wondeful experience. We spent a day with Raphel from Dolphin Dive and he did not disappoint. First was the gazillion dolphins we found our boat surround by and the he went out of his way to track down some Fin whales which was a true memory maker. So, the Desert Inn is a good value and our visit to Loreto was more than enjoyable.

Room Tip: Rooms are set up a four plexes..we like the top.

“fine stay in front of the sea”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 August 2010

we've been there 2 nights this august. Loreto was very hot but the hotel is well air conditioned, the rooms are large and clean. There was a special price and we spent more or less 70 usd per night. There is a comfortable swimming pool and the rooms are in front of the beach. I think this is the best solution in Loreto if you won't go to the expensive "La Mision"

“Fantastic Ocean view and beach access! Big clean rooms! Nice Pool!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2010

We choose to stay here because it feels like home, only in Mexico. The staff is very helpful with whatever you need, laundry, blow dryers, even getting your clothes you left from another city in Baja! We feel very safe and we come every year to stay here for fishing tournaments. There is room for our truck and trailer and fresh water available to wash our motors and fishing equiptment. There is a restaurant for your enjoyment. We have parked our boat right outside our room. We love it here and the pool is clean with the ocean just steps away. This year we may go back a second time and if we do we will definitely stay there. We have stayed other places in Loreto but think this one is the best. The air conditioning works really good always!
