We discovered this small gem of an inn by accident. We had been staying in a resort on St. Maarten and could see the distant island of St. Eustatius (Statia) from our hotel. We decided on impulse to check it out. What we found at the end of a 20 minute Winair flight was the Caribbean as it might have been thirty or forty years ago. A beautiful, quiet tropical oasis.
Of the only five possible places to stay, we chose Statia Lodge. There are ten tropical-style cottages, set into a hillside, on beautifully landscaped grounds with a club house and large fresh water swimming pool. It all overlooks the sea, with magnificent views to St. Kitts in the south.
Our cottage was furnished simply but comfortably, and was immaculately clean. A rental car was included in the room rate. This was necessary since Statia Lodge is about five kilometers from town. Other than a continental breakfast, meals were not served, but this was no problem since there is an excellent restaurant on the beach, The Blue Bead, co-owned by Ronnie, who manages Statia Lodge.
Many of the other guests at Statia Lodge were divers. They told us that the dive sites off Statia are spectacular, among the best in the Caribbean. Statia Lodge is connected with the local dive shop, Scubaqua.
For anyone seeking the Caribbean as it once was, we recommend the island of St. Eustatius and Statia Lodge.
