“Keep driving”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2010

Strange layout, with nowhere to go but the bar. The promised restaurant doesn't really exist. BIG loud TV in the bar, and nowhere to escape to. The staff were great, the food was adequate, the Guinness was good, but this hotel could be so much better. Horrible hard seats in the bar.
It's the best in Lybster, but why would you?

“Really disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2010

Let's start with the positives:

- nice quality lounge area downstairs
- room had a flat screen TV
- food is good from restaurant & b'fast

Negatives:
- room I had was VERY tired.... mix of old furnishings, damage to wallpaper, thin walls (can hear next door easily); bathroom needed re-furb (loose tiles, old suite)
- room I had did NOT resemble their web site example in any way !!! Take care ! Clearly some rooms are better than others........
- service was mixed
- check in was difficult
- pricey given poor quality of the room

Negatives are a shame given the nice lounge area downstairs & prices charged.

I would not recommend

“Poor”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 June 2010

We too stayed for 1 night for a wedding party. First appearances are OK. The reception area is nice enough as is the lounge to the left. The bars are also OK. The room however, was atrocious for the money they charge. The furniture was a mixture of old delapitated bits and pieces that fell apart as you opened a drawer. The shower room showed signs of mould and was dark and dingy. I agree with other comments relating to the manager. He was rude and unhelpful and was scruffily dressed. He could have made more of an effort for arriving guests who all had gone to great lengths to be well turned out for the wedding which was about to take place. The only thing that saved the day for me was the sheer joy that the wedding party put into the event themselves and the band.

“Gone Downhill”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 November 2009

Used to be the best hotel in Caithness, but not anymore. Food has deteriorated, service is appalling, high turnover of staff, and complete know it all attitude from the new management.

Restaurant closes to non residents when there is a function one, showing a complete lack of forward planning. Dining room is no longer a sanctuary, as when there is a function on guests cannot sit in peace and enjoy their meal and conversation, due to the flow of drunks and party goers running back and forth through the dining room.

Dining room used to be in the current lounge, which was a lot better.

“A very pleasant stop-over”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 September 2009

My husband and I recently had a very pleasant overnight stay at this hotel before travelling over to Orkney. On arrival our check-in at reception was quick and friendly and we were allocated room 15, which is a twin bedded room at the front of the building. The room was well appointed and nicely decorated with a lovely bay window that had seating around it. There was plenty storage space, a table, tea/coffee making facilities and a small TV. The en-suite facilities were satisfactory and clean, with a shower cubicle. A hairdryer was supplied. There were ample parking facilities at the front of the hotel.

We ate at the hotel and found the food to be very good. This is a sample of what we had: tomato soup, fish & chips, home-made chicken curry (this was delicious), hot chocolate fudge cake with ice cream – cost approx. £25.00.

The beds were comfortable and the staff were very pleasant and helpful. There was a buffet breakfast in the morning and cooked food was made to order.

This was a very pleasant stop-over, ideally placed for a short visit to John O’ Groats and only about 30 minutes drive to Scrabster for the ferry over to Orkney.
