“Quiet winter getaway, lovely local food & fabulous beaches”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Old-fashioned hotel-but in the nicest way.Highlight is the food-local where possible;fish a speciality. They even tell you where the eggs come from! Our room was huge with view over the village & newly refurbished bathroom.Staff friendly & helpful.Dogs seem to be very welcome which makes a nice change. Two lovely cosy lounges.Bar is a bit basic but the selection of Malt Whiskies (ask for the menu!) makes up for it. Location is superb-vast open beaches with scarcely anyone on them. The hotels pricing makes this a very competitive break-B &B prices with hotel comfort and excellent food.

Room Tip: Room 2 is on a corner & huge.

We stayed in a self catering cottage for 2 nights With our dog. What a fantastic place! Large open room with log burning fire.Underfloor heating. It was toasty warm & comfortable with a few stairs up to the bedroom overlooking the front room.Fully equipped kitchen, big fluffy towels & large comfy bed. Tea & coffee provided & toiletries & a dressing room! Hotel was closed which was the only negative as the menus looked great.

“Great winter getaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 December 2011

We had our third or fourth stay at this hotel in November and, as always, it provided the perfect short break for us (a couple of a certain age!) and our dog, who just loves the Northumberland beaches, Although some might consider the decor in the main hotel bedrooms a wee bit dated, it's in keeping with the location and ambience - a cosy village hotel - and always clean and comfortable. Food is good and not overcomplicated, which we prefer, and although the table d'hote menu from which guests on winter break deals can choose doesn't always have anything vegetarian on it, those of us who are of that ilk are invited to select something from the regular a la carte lists instead. Desserts this time were particularly tempting and very well presented.

Staff are friendly and helpful without being "in your face" and seem well tuned into their guests. That weekend there was a lively, lovely group (some of a similar age to ourselves) who had a birthday celebration one evening, when they all dressed up as teachers and schoolchildren - though if we'd worn skirts that short our headmistress' eyebrows would have been through her hairline! They had a great time and the staff were happy to organise the layout of the room to suit them and enjoyed the fun as much as the other guests did - not a sour look from anyone, which was nice.

It's a great base from which to explore the area - the obligatory trip to Alnwick and Barters' Bookshop, walk on the beach at Alnmouth (excellent take-away cappucinos and sandwiches from the deli in the main street) and the Wooden Toy Shop in Belford, a great place to find fun stocking fillers as well as good quality toys. Had the weather been better we might also have gone to the nearby gardens but sadly we only had one really good day, which, rather than deterring us, will simply mean we have to go again in the not-too-distant future.

And it was really nice to receive a very attractive Christmas Card from the family who own and run the establishment - not a bit corporate and much appreciated - we will be back and would certainly recommend Dunstanburgh Castle Hotel to anyone who's considering a break in Northumberland.

“Northumberland in the spring”

We stayed in the 'Stable'. A small self contained barn conversion in the garden opposite the main Hotel. There were also the 'Barn' and the 'Hay Loft'. We liked the space: open plan kitchen/dining/sitting room. Up a few steps to bed room and down a few steps to bath room/ dressing room. Embleton itself is quite nice with a golf course, lovely beach and good walk to Dunstanburgh Castle. There are lots of nice places to visit a short car ride away such as Alnwick casle and gardens, Bamburgh Castle, Cragside, Lindisfarne, the Farne Islands and Chillingham Cattle.
The beakfast is very good and in the evening you can eat in the bar or the restaurant. The menu is not huge and I always think that with a smaller choice you may be getting freshly cooked food. You could go self catering but I enjoy being looked after.
Almost every one we spoke to at the hotel had been there several times before and I think that that is a good recommedation. We have been for two years running and we have thoroughly enjoyed our stays and all Northumberland has to offer.

Room Tip: As I stated at the begining we stayed in the Stable and the Hay Loft looked similar. The Barn may b...
