We had our third or fourth stay at this hotel in November and, as always, it provided the perfect short break for us (a couple of a certain age!) and our dog, who just loves the Northumberland beaches, Although some might consider the decor in the main hotel bedrooms a wee bit dated, it's in keeping with the location and ambience - a cosy village hotel - and always clean and comfortable. Food is good and not overcomplicated, which we prefer, and although the table d'hote menu from which guests on winter break deals can choose doesn't always have anything vegetarian on it, those of us who are of that ilk are invited to select something from the regular a la carte lists instead. Desserts this time were particularly tempting and very well presented.
Staff are friendly and helpful without being "in your face" and seem well tuned into their guests. That weekend there was a lively, lovely group (some of a similar age to ourselves) who had a birthday celebration one evening, when they all dressed up as teachers and schoolchildren - though if we'd worn skirts that short our headmistress' eyebrows would have been through her hairline! They had a great time and the staff were happy to organise the layout of the room to suit them and enjoyed the fun as much as the other guests did - not a sour look from anyone, which was nice.
It's a great base from which to explore the area - the obligatory trip to Alnwick and Barters' Bookshop, walk on the beach at Alnmouth (excellent take-away cappucinos and sandwiches from the deli in the main street) and the Wooden Toy Shop in Belford, a great place to find fun stocking fillers as well as good quality toys. Had the weather been better we might also have gone to the nearby gardens but sadly we only had one really good day, which, rather than deterring us, will simply mean we have to go again in the not-too-distant future.
And it was really nice to receive a very attractive Christmas Card from the family who own and run the establishment - not a bit corporate and much appreciated - we will be back and would certainly recommend Dunstanburgh Castle Hotel to anyone who's considering a break in Northumberland.
