“Don't let the outside put you off this gem!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

It really does look disappointing from the outside but persevere and be brave and you will be rewarded with wonderful food and hospitality. We could not have had a warmer welcome or better food for breakfast or dinner. The seafood, especially the scallops, were truly to di(v)e for! The restaurant and bar were frequented by a rag, tag and bobtail mixture of tourists, locals and staff from around the globe and we were treated to accordian and cello live music! It's true that the room was both dowdy and scruffy, small and in need of refurbishment, but who cares, the positives far outweighed!

We are generally pleased with this posting and thank the reviewer for the positive comments. However there are a couple of matters we should address. The exterior of the building was finished in 'Skye Marble'. This kind of roughcast is supposed to 'last a life time' but we do know, from living in these islands, that this is not the case and eventually the dull finish does have to be either chipped off and re-done or, alternatively, painted. Both are mammoth tasks, the painting needs, at the very least, a couple of coats as the first coat is really difficult to apply, due to the rough finish. We hope to tackle this task within the next year.
The room occupied by the reviewer is a small double (described as small, but not tiny, to anyone making a reservation). Unfortunately, this room has no view (just looks out on the raised ground at the rear of the hotel) and gets very little sunshine. We do not feel that the room (re-papered and painted in January 2011) is dowdy or scruffy. The carpet is only 2 years old and the furnishings are good. The en-suite, with toilet, shower and wash basin was due to be refurbished and re-aligned as the shower unit was showing signs of wear. Due to a problem with the contractor not being available (despite promises) before the start of the season, this up-grade had to be postponed.
Now, as I compose this response on 31st January 2012, I can say that the planned refurbishment has now been completed and the finished result has given a huge lift to the whole room.

“A great welcome at a delightful location, with a truly memorable breakfast.”

Like others, as we drove up and parked, we didn't feel the location matched up to the description of the inn, but the panoramic views over the hills and lochs, obtained from the dining room , were beautiful, especially as the sun set during our evening meal, which was as delicious as we expected, and if anything understated in the menu .Certainly, it is one of the two best restaurants in the Uists. However, breakfast, was truly memorable in terms of the variety, and quality of what was on offer, with the best scrambled egg with salmon we have ever tasted, and of the same standard as we have experienced in the likes of award winning Kilcamb Lodge and Airds Hotel. Furthermore, in keeping with the relaxed informality of what is really a small hotel, we were able to choose when we had breakfast, in our case nearly 10am. as I wanted to do some early morning photography.
Unfortunately, we were too late to choose a superior room, but would do so the next time, as the basic room is rather small for twin occupancy. The price was very reasonable indeed, and as has been posted before, the Inn is centrally located, giving quick access to the Uists, and despite the feeling of being in a beautiful remote location, is less than ten minutes from the main spine road. We look forward to returning, and this would be our first choice of where to stayin the Uists.

Room Tip: Try to book a superior room for space, and outlook. However, I forgot to ask about which rooms were...

“Great little hotel in ideal location with superb food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2011

Stayed 10 night here and really enjoyed the excellent food along with very freindly staff and owners. The breakfasts are some of the best I've seen with brilliant choice of food. The location is pretty central for the Uists and Benbecula and only a copuplke of minutes drive from the main road through the islands. Rioom was comfortable and the lounges are nicely furnished with a load of books to llok at if thye weather's on the poor side. The hotel has free wi-fi access which is useful in such a remote place as the Outer Hebrides. Would definitely stay here again and recommend without any reservation.

“Cozy, welcoming restaurant and lounge with good views, food and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 August 2011

Cozy welcoming restaurant and lounge and with comfy sofas and views of mountains, water and big sky. Service feels more like friends than staff - but not over-familiar. Really good food and decent wine available. (Had sole goujons as a starter 3 days in a row.)Ideal bread and chicken or salmon sandwiches for packed-lunch out-and-about. Very helpful eg dropping everything and taking us to airport when problem with phones and taxi. Slept like logs in silence.

Room Tip: As ever, most expensive rooms are the best for views, terrace etc.

“Not up to scratch in a number of ways....”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 August 2011

This Inn is a mixed bag but I have to say that overall it is a bit disappointing. Our room (mid price) was small and a bit old fashioned, neither of which concerned us greatly. However, it was in desperate need of attention, which concerned us more. The radiator had we were told, been sat on and pulled from the wall, so it was sort of propped up. Mending it would entail redecorating so hadnt been done we were told.

The owner laughed when he told us that the light above the bathroom sink has to be tapped to make it work (a 'safety' feature haha). The toilet flush was broken, so the cistern lid was partly off and we were instructed to squeeze two bits of plastic together from the workings inside to make the toilet flush. The sealant round the shower was patched up and tatty. We considered moving hotels, but knew that there was no availability elsewhere as we had looked before booking.

Breakfast on both days was spectacularly good, absolutely nothing to fault there. Dinner on the second night was also fine. However on the first night, I was served salmon which tasted off. For the first time ever I sent a meal back. The waiter confirmed to me that he had tasted it and it was "bad, really bad". There were apologies and of course no charge for my dinner.

So the good: breakfast - wonderful; dinner - on the second night - very good; the setting - spectacular; the waiting staff - excellent.

The not so good: the dated decor in our room

The bad: the faulty toilet, radiator and bathroom light; oh and the salmon, that was really bad.
