“Affordable & decent food”

We stayed in this hotel in connection with a five day sight seeing car trip. I wish to recommend this hotel to other travelers for the following various reasons. It is affordable. Considering “everything” in Norway is expensive, this hotel is value for money. The rooms are simple but clean. The public areas are interesting, comfortable, large and show, with photos etc. the history of this hotel. The hotel is in the “Historic” org. and used to have the function of a way-station. The hotel is close to the Stryn summer-ski centre and, importantly, relatively close to Geiranger. The food that we had, in the evening, was “home-made” and typically Norwegian. The hotel does a hot/cold buffet, which was both abundant & good. The same quality applied for breakfast. If, like us, you need to stretch your legs; use the opportunity to take a walk in the area upwards behind the hotel – follow the red T`s. Finally - If you have strong nerves and a head for heights – take a drive up to the Dalsnibba viewpoint.

“Nice Lobby, Outdated Rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 September 2009

You walk into this place and you're amazed. It's really gorgeous. Modern, yet rustic. They obviously put a lot of time an effort into the first floor. The gentleman at the front desk was very friendly and helpful. He even upgraded our room which was a wonderful surprise since we showed up looking and smelling like backpackers.

Then, we got to our room. I'm hoping they just haven't gotten around to updating the rooms in the past 30 years. Everything was old and not in a charming way at all. The tub looked like one of those retrofit plastic covers and was shockingly high to get into. The ceiling was cracked in the bathroom and the bathroom was so small, two people could not fit unless one was in the tub. The bed was uncomfortable. If the rooms are renovated the place would be outstanding. Nice big windows and general architecture. Also, there was free wifi, but we had to go down the hall to use it, we couldn't get access in our room.

The breakfast was pretty good but confusing. Confusing in the same way the rest of the hotel is confusing: lovely loose leaf teas and instant coffee. A spread of home made breads and dry scrambled eggs that seem like they are from a powder. Don't get me wrong, I never left breakfast hungry (and I'm a picky eater), but it was strange.

There is construction going on around the hotel, maybe they're making improvements. (it was quiet, though, it never bothered us). It was still a good value, but I think I'd try something closer to the fjord if I went back next time.

“Authentic Norwegian experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 July 2007

This hotel is one of the historic hotels. It's run by the fifth generation of the same family that has always run it, and it's been in business for over 100 years. In the 90s, an Easter TV-crime was filmed here. The common areas (dining rooms, bar) are really nice, and filled with lots of traditional Norwegian carved wood furniture, stone floors, etc.

The rooms are spacious, but the bathrooms are tiny and should be refurbished. Also, there isn't a TV in the room (which I agree might not be in keeping with the feel of the hotel), neither are there other things you might expect such as Kleenex. There are only the very basics such as soap. The hotel room felt quite spare. Also, the sound proofing could be better.

Breakfast is included, and it's amazing. We also had dinner at the hotel, and it was superb. Both breakfast and dinner was from a buffet. What a buffet! Great choices, and they made sure to include lots of traditional Norwegian food you might not get to taste elsewhere (sourcream porridge is for example delicious).

The service was great. We got in very late one night (midnight), and were really hungry, so we asked the receptionist (apparently the national snowboard champion) if there was anywhere we could get some food. He said that the kitchen was closed, but he could probably fix something. He went into the kitchen and returned with two delicious sandwiches. Very, very, good customer service! He also gave us good advice about trips in the surrounding area.

I think this would be a very good choice for tourists seeking some peace and quiet and an authentic experience, and the proximity to Geirangerfjorden (the world's most beautiful fjord, and the best UNESCO world heritage site according to National Geographic Magazine), the summer ski center, glaciers, etc makes this a very convenient place to stay. Also, I would suggest driving to Stryn to buy some Moods of Norway clothes. They're great.
