After taking the California Bar exam in July, me and two buddies decided to go down to Harbour Island for a week of relaxation. Harbour Island is a quaint little island with friendly people and home to perhaps the best beach in the world, Pink Sands. Being a student, cost was a big factor in chooisng accomodations, and Tingum Village was reasonable. I found Tingum Village to be cozy and clean and their staff was very welcoming. The location was great too, as the beach was a mere 5 miutes walking distance. If your on a budget but want to visit the expensive Harbour Island this is great choice, definitely not upscale but very cozy.

If you aren't a fan of the 1000 room resort then Tingum Village in Dunmore town is the place for you. Tingum village is a variety of rooms and cottages, nestled against the ridge that runs down the island. You can dine at the resturant at Tingum and enjoy Ma Ruby's famous "Cheeseburger in Paradise". The menu is all local foods cooked in the traditional style. My favorite is the conch, a giant snail like creature. There are many local places to eat and shop on the island. Walking around you will meet and see the people of the Bahamas in their world. Friendly, wonderful people in a beautiful island setting, who could ask for more. There are several dive shops on the island and many beautiful dive sites around, including the well known "Current Cut drift dive" and the devil's backbone reef which abounds in wrecks. I have been here four times and as I am getting to know more of the locals, my visits just get better and better. Tingum Village made my stay ideal as the only noise I heard is the breeze through the palms and the chanticlaire roosters in the morning. A most rewarding place to visit.

Decent rooms w/ceiling fan, A/C, beds & bath, small terrace, grounds, etc. Honor system bar. Dining Bahamas avg. quality meat. EASY 5 min or less walk to beach. Locals, family and tourists alike visit. Friendly service. Rents golf carts. Don’t like island inconvenience…not for you. Easy on wallet though.

We hadn't planned on staying in Harbour Island while on Eleuthera, but because my 12 year old son was scuba-diving with a dive shop in Harbour Island towards the end of our visit, we decided to spend a night there before heading out on the ferry. We were fortunate that they had a room, and that there was a hotel not so very expensive as most. Tingum Village has an easy and relaxed spirit to it. Ma Ruby seems to preside over the hotel, bar, and restaurant, but her daughter (I think she was her daughter!) was doing much of the hard work with admirable energy and grace. All the staff were friendly and helpful, and the restaurant food lived up to its reputation. I think they were improving some of the rooms, and the one we stayed in was really light and nice and quiet, and quite roomy. My only complaint was that the air conditioner was a little loud. I had the sense of walking through a tropical jungle to reach it, which was a delight. Before leaving we went to Harbour Island's beach on the Atlantic side (about a two minute walk from the hotel) with its blissful, gentle but not too gentle waves, and I sorely wished we could have stayed another day.
