“Our 2nd time (and won't be our last) in this paradise”

It had been over 10 years since we first stayed at Lapa Rios and we were excited to return. All the things we loved are the same, and in some ways the place has improved. The furnishings are a bit more upscale, plus there are services like massage (I had an excellent massage) that weren't there the last time. But what hasn't change is the peace and tranquility of feeling a part of nature and really escaping from it all. No internet or cell service really makes a difference. And the experience of waking up to the sound of birds and howler monkeys is so magical.

The food is excellent and the staff is friendly and enthusiastic. Guests are so well taken care of, from the moment your plane lands in Puerto Jimenez until you are dropped off at the end of the stay. I would recommend staying at least 4 nights. It's sad enough to have to leave, but give yourself enough time to go on several nature walks and tours and also just to relax.

“Paradise in the Rainforest”

We travelled to this resort with friends in March 2011. It was a small challenge to get to the resort given how remote it is and with that said, be prepared to travel on some bumpy gravel roads. The resort's driver picked us up at the airstripe and stopped when we wanted to get a photo in which was great. It wasn't what we were expecting when we pulled up to the front entrance but it made up for it in every way once we settled in. Their website talks about the resort not being for everyone - i would agree. There is lots of walking (straight up hill from your cottage) and lots of wildlife. We had a huge cockroach in our shower when we got to our cabin - but hey, experiencing the rainforest was what we came for right! (It was harmless and easy enough to get to move on its way). We got up super early every day to go hiking. The Howler Monkeys get up around 4:30-5 anyway. Sometimes it sounded like the troops were calling to each other while sitting on top of our cottage but they weren't of course. Their voices can carry quite a distance. We went with the resort guides on a bird watching tour in the early am. The tour guide was extremely knowledgable. It was a great time. We also went on an afternoon tour through the forest and through some streams to a local waterfall for a swim - (waterproof hiking Keens required)! There is another tour at night to see the creepy crawlers, frogs and even sleeping birds. You will see parots, tucans and lots of monkeys on the property during your stay. But if all that isn't enough, the meals will completely impress you. They are five star all the way. Creative, delicious and different every day. The staff were very accommodating and the cottages were very comfortable. Each has both an indoor and outdoor shower and are built in such a way that each feels like it is the only one there. If you can include this resort in your tour of Costa Rica you DEFINITELY WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!! It was simply outstanding!

Room Tip: If you don't like steep climbs request a room closer to the main building. We stayed in cabin 1...

“Marvellous, highlight of trip”

For once the admiring reviews are true! Not much to add except AMEN! Four night package with all of the tours included removes the nickel and dining alternative. Certainly way better facility, rooms, and value for money than at El Silencio Lodge and its exorbitant activity charges. Here you have wildlife of all sorts right outside your door. Convivial atmosphere. Fly in to Puerto Jiminez. Great way to see the tortured topography of CR. Cuisine is very good, but not innovatively great.

Room Tip: Yes, there is a stepped walkway. with rest points that overlook the ocean, on a hill from the rooms...

Dear DJ,

Thank you for sharing with other travelers your opinion of your recent stay at Lapa Rios. We are honored to hear that we were the highlight of your trip. As you pointed out, wildlife is what Lapa Rios is about. The idea of the lodge from the beginning (now almost 20 years ago) was to create a sustainable way to preserve the local wildlife through the creation of our private reserve and maintain a corridor from the southern tip of the Osa Peninsula to Corcovado National Park. We are happy to hear that you were able to see much of our amazing flora and fauna. In terms of the cuisine, we are currently revamping the menu to make it more innovative and integrate more local and typical Costa Rican food prepared in an upscale way. In terms of the rooms, the ones that are closer to the main lodge are equipped with two queen beds and the ones that are a bit further down some steps all have king size beds. We hope you have the chance to come back some time soon. All the best.

“Lapa Rios Ecolodge”

Wow. The best ecolodge. The rooms are gorgeous with the most amazing view of the Pacific and the rain forest. Monkeys and birds right out of your deck. Very private and clean rooms. Only 16 bungalows so you are overwhelmed with gracious staff and attention to your every need. Great tour guides and good food. Just wonderful.

Room Tip: Try to get a room close to the main lodge. The walk up is pretty hard and the lower you are on the h...

“The good reviews are right-on”

We stayed at the lodge Jan. 19-23 based on reviews here on Tripadvisor. Our experience was in line with the 5 star reviews. I'll not dwell on the many positives but will point out a few things that you should be prepared for if you choose to stay here. The lodge is as isolated and the road as rough as others have mentioned. We noticed a number of older people staying at the lodge and there were some complaints about the steps. There are only 2 rooms (1&2) close to the dining room/swimming pool . Roms 3 thru 8 are some 60 stairsteps away and the the other rooms are more steps and further.
The hikes and guides (Edwin and Melvin) are great but again there are a lot of steep steps on the lodge trails.
While there were many hi-lites for us, I think seeing a poison dart frog at the waterfalls was the one thing I did not expect to see.

Room Tip: Rooms 1&2 are 30 yards with no steps. Rooms 3-8 involve a lot of steps. Rooms 9-16 are quite cli...
