“Very welcoming owners and as for the breakfast................”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2010

We were made very welcome at the Lochinvar Hotel. The rooms were warm (it was -7 degrees) nicely furnished and comfortable. The bar was a friendly place and the log fire wonderful. We were told it was dog-friendly and that proved to be more than the case. Our pooch had a great time. Finally, the breakfast was the best hotel one I have ever had with everything freshly cooked and served on hot plates. We will be back!

“Friendly staff Great Food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 March 2008

Stayed here for 2 nights. The hotel itself was easy to find, though not if you rely on the actual postal address!! Which comes up as Castle Douglas. The hotel is actually in a small village called St Johns of Dalry. Its a friendly wee village where the locals all say hi and morning and there are many local characters frequent the pub at night. It was entertaining and comical!!.

The owners have not yet had the hotel a year but they were incredibley friendly and helpful and the food was fantastic as was the choice of wine.

OIn arrival we were allocated a room which had an amazing view but was freezing and there was only a small dimplex heater to try to heat the room. After being there over an hour it was still Freezing. I was ready to go home (some 3 hours drive) My partner went to see if there was another room or a heater available and the owners helpfully allocated us a new room which had a huge old fashioned radiator and also a radiator outside the door in the corridor. So although we had the problems they were extremely helpful and accomodatiing.

I have to say the beds in both rooms were very comfortable and the rooms were large. It is an old coaching inn and could do with some redecoration - but this may be in the pipeline as as I said the owners are new. There is a distinct going back in time feel but this should not put people off it in my opinion adds to the character. But if you are looking for a 5 star plush city hotel here is not for you.

Our dog was allowed to be with us in one of the bars where the great food was served and we chatted with staff and locals in front of a roaring open fire.

We were allowed to take breakfast up to the room on a tray so the dog was not alone and the portions were great, food piping hot and highly reccommended.

The family have a very polite friendly daughter and a lovely Alaskan malamute who we would loved to have met rather than just saw over the fence but a very happy dog she looked.

All in all it was a perfectly acceptable place to stay and for us was made a good stay by the staff and the locals.

  • Liked — Comfy beds, Great food, and friendly hospitable staff
  • Disliked — the 2 rooms we had only had baths - no showers
