“Food was average”

We didn't stay at this hotel we only had Christmas lunch. The service is superb, but it was let down by the tradional Christmas turkey, which was more of a rolled turkey and the swede (I think it was swede) was a mushy liquid on the side of the plate. The gravy didnt go with any of the meat on offer, it was too rich. Loved the bar area and as already mentioned we couldn't fault the staff who were first class, but food needs to step up a notch.

“Great food and service”

My husband and I went here for my birthday in November. Got a great deal for two nights bed and breakfast with one night's dinner included for a very small amount through a deal website. We absolutely loved it!

All the staff looked after us well and every meal with delicious. Dinner was wonderful- we had all three courses and came back for more on the second night. Breakfast was great too although it would be nice if they could have offered a menu so you could chose what you would have liked.

We were given a lovely big room which was comfy and quiet. The only downside to the room was the lack of a bath but that's all down to personal preference really.

Overall we both absolutely loved it and will most definitely be back!

“Excellent food, wine and service”

I have been to the Black Bull a few times over the last couple of years and stopped going when it was under the old management as the service was dreadful, food below average and staff very unwelcoming. However - now it is a different place! The menu is really interesting and different, the food delicious and the staff are fantastic. They were really enthusiastic and knowledgeable and very happy to take time to talk and discuss the food and where it came from (all locally!). Previously my father had asked where the new potatoes came from (as it was out of season for new potatoes) and the response had been "in the ground". I would definitely recommend the Black Bull to anyone and would say just to make sure that you have time to sit, relax and enjoy yourself!

“Disappointed”

Stopped here for lunch one day last week, had burgers which definitely didn't taste homemade and were rather unpleasant. The girl serving was cheery but she was on her own so service was slow.

“Fantastic service, delectable menu and lots to offer! Well worth a visit.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 October 2011

I heard the Black Bull was under new management and was eager to see how things had changed. I visited last Wednesday with the family and was delighted with the food and the service. We have two children under 5 which can be stressful, especially in such a nice establishment, but the staff (and manager) were adept in making us feel relaxed. The food was served in a timely fashion, with homemade rolls coming out at a perfectly timed interval, to ensure the boys didn't have time to misbehave.
The haggis Bon bons were a treat for a starter for the adults, while the boys had a lovely main of lasagne and haddock goujons. The food was of excellent quality. For mains, my husband had a fillet steak which was delicious. Although I am not a chip lover, the homemade chips made me want to change my mind! I had the beef burger Wellington- definitely one to try. The chef has interesting ideas which make for innovative but delicious meals.
We enjoyed it so much, we booked again for three days later, and brought family to try the restaurant. With the promise if wine tasting nights and christmas menus, you'd be a fool not to try it yourself.
