“Winter Warmer Break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

My husband and I spent just one night here as a pre birthday celebration ( Winter Warmer Special offer for DB&B) and were not dissappointed. We only live 30mins away but both of us felt that we had enjoyed a mini break. Our room was Heckham Peckham and was huge with an enormous modern 4 poster, 2 large windows overlooking the lane and river, and a staircase leading from within the room to an enormous ensuite bathroom with a victorian freestanding bath, twin basins and very large shower with the biggest shower drench rose I have seen. The furnishings and bedding were lovely and the selection of teas/coffee etc. very good. We were the first to check in so were tole that we could have a look at the other rooms that the Bell has to offer! All were different but of the same high standard. Our evening meal was delicious. We didn't have a pud but sampled the cognac left in our room instead. Perhaps one small critisism would be that although the staff waiting at tables that evening were pleasant, they still had to ask "who is having the fish". Only a small point but when one is paying reasonably high prices, it should be known who at the table is having what! That is good resaurant service.
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to return when we need another break.

“Very Disappointing”

We had heard good things about the Bell
Had Sunday Lunch there !
At £22 for two courses we were expecting something a bit special.
The Pork was very tasty but it was hiding vegatables that had been hanging round for hours
The Puddings were unappetizing and although very well presented were not tasting the best
Coffee left a bad taste in mouth all afternoon
Service very poor
We left feeling very disappointed. It spoilt our lovely day out !

“Variable”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

Booked Sunday lunch for a party of 6. On arrival at 1210 it was empty and we setlled in for a drink etc. Two of the party arrived a bit later. The Bar staff were fine but we found the waiting staff member very " off" . We were presented with the menues prior to the arrival of our other party members and well prior to the 1300 time slot. The staff member harried us to get the order in ( I suspect because we were early they wanted to get the kitchen started, as theye were quite busy at our booked time) Fine but why not tell us in a friendly manner, we would have understaood . The wine list was superb and we were happy with the one chosen. First we were presented with a large number to tasty bread rolls but only 4 butter pats, we asked for more and it seemed a chore for the staff , as when they came with the extra two pats it was slapped down on the table with no grace or even comment. The starters were fine and then we had the mains, the Yorkshire Puddings were poor and to have a plated meal with 2 small potatoes and very limited veg is not what we expected having paid £25 for a three course lunch. The gravy was good . However ++ the dessert++. The apple crumble was an absolute disaster , it seemed to be sliced apple with , not sure what, on the top . Again we found the service lacking in charm and warmth.Sad really as we had high hopes of our visit and some parts were fine. Let down by , staff, size of portions and no offer regarding the dessert that was so poor.
All in all a lack lustre Sunday Lunch

“Perfect Way To Spend New Year”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

I have just returned from the most fantastic few days spent at The Bell at Skenfrith. Although I only live an hour away from The Bell, its fantastic location nestled in the midst of the countryside (fantastic walks - of which all levels were catered for in the Bell's very own leaflet on recommended walks) made us all feel like it was a true holiday away from the hustle and bustle of 'town' life. Nevertheless, the food was exquisite - I have not found a restaurant in the close-ish town Cheltenham that serves better food at a better quality and price than the Bell.

The staff always wore a smile on their face - whatever the request. During supper they even turned down the younger children's bed - making them feel just as important as the grown ups as they climbed into wonderfully comfortable, snug beds after tea and hot chocolate in front of the roaring fire place downstairs.

I would recommend this to anyone - I cannot believe that more people have not heard of this fantastically kept secret!

Thank you to all those working at The Bell xxx

“good quality”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

I am always relieved when I arrive at a hotel or guest house to find that it is clean, and I was not disappointed by the Bell. I would give it a good 4/5 for cleanliness. Very few would ever get a 5. I found the atmosphere warm and cosy and the food good. The twin room in which we stayed is great and most importantly the beds were comfortable so had a good nights sleep. The décor is subtle and tasteful with a country feel but is not dated. One unfortunate thing is that there is a store cupboard close to this room (room 2) and sadly the staff were not considerate or quiet when they used this cupboard, bit unsettling when trying to relax. The location is great for a restful short break, beautiful scenery. The rooms are a bit pricey but overall I would recommend The Bell
