“Superb food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2011 via mobile

The main reason for staying in the Crown is its Michelin starred food which was superb. Our meal was enhanced even further by wines for each course being chosen by the sommelier. Service was generally very good although slightly marred when the coffee ordered did not arrive and having to correct the bill when they forgot to charge for the wine for two of our courses. The room we stayed in looked a little tired with scuffs and marks on paintwork and bedcover. This didn't spoil our visit - just didn't do justice to such superb food.

“Thoroughly enjoyable stay”

We booked to stay here after reading the excellent review in the Weekend Telegraph recently and it did not disappoint. It is off the beaten track but easy to find using the website directions. Warm welcome and nice touch to deliver warm Welsh cakes to our room just after arrival. Delicious canapes served with our aperitifs and we treated ourselves to the 6-course tasting menu with accompanying wines. The food was really outstanding and we loved every course. Service was friendly and attentive. Our only comment would be that, as mentioned in a previous review, the first course is the amuse-bouche which everyone on the a la carte is served too. Also, the two last courses are both desserts and cheese was only offered at a supplement. My husband is not a great dessert fan and both of us felt that a small course of a local Welsh cheese instead of one of the desserts would have improved the tasting menu. Apart from that, with superb petits fours with our coffee, it was an excellent meal.

Our room, Bryn, was extremely comfortable (at the front of the house) and we had no complaints at all about the breakfast, which was good.

We would certainly recommend this restaurant with rooms to our foody friends.

Room Tip: Although our room, Bryn, was on the front of the house, the small road outside is very quiet and we...

“Worth the trip..for the food”

Let's be honest this is not the best location in the world for a dinner or lunch. It is neither convenient nor in an area of outstanding natural beauty ...or rather it is but you just can't see it from the restaurant, so the only reason to come here would be for the food. We went on a Thursday night and had the six course menu and it was really very good. You can see the menu on their website so no need to tell you what we had suffice to say that it was matched by the excellent service/knowledge of the staff. The rooms are clean and well furnished with some nice touches. A tip? Be careful in the four-poster..it squeaks!!

“Perhaps, it was because it was a monday evening..”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2011

South Wales needs good dining establishments, and it pains me to give a poor review here. But the 6 course degustation menu we had was poor. First, its a bit much for the amuse guele to constitute the first course, and for the cheeseboard to be an add on course with a supplement. Secondly, the meal was very patchy. The tomato salad was the pick, due to its flavours and simplicity. Other courses were a mish mash which sometimes didn't work. Thirdly, and by far the worst point of the evening, was the wine. Given that the menu is a "surprise" ( i e you don't know what you are having in advance), we left it to the sommelier to choose the wines which were described as having been selected to enhance the courses. Don't believe it! What we had were the wines that are served by the glass, and they were poor, and positively detracted from the meal. If there is a next time, I will order a la carte, and select my own wines from the excellent wine list. The accomodation was comfortable, and breakfast was excellent. Perhaps our meal was a disappointment as it was a monday evening??

My wife book an overnight stay for my birthday.
Booked into the 'Wales' room, good sized room and a huge bathroom with a great powershower, receptionist very helpful when we booked in and asked to change rooms at short notice.
We had the 9 course 'taster' menu which was truely amazing, be prepared for a feast.......... and be hungry before you start.........absolutely amazing food.

Room Tip: 'Kyffin' room is over the kitchen and can be noise (aparently)
