“Serene Island/Stressful Owners”

The island is all one could hope for in terms of beauty and serenity. The cottages and hotel ambiance was perfect until the second day when we experienced an "episode we still find difficult to comprehend". After the first night in our adorable cottage, we left two notes in our room with respect to the "rules of the cottage" left in the laminated book stating that guests were responsible for placing towels in shower stall for replacement towels the following day and beds would be made but linens only changed weekly.
Here are our notes: Dear Guys , Could we have an extra towel for my hair and two more beach towels as the two we have are stiff and wet from using then today at beach. Note 2: Dear Dave and Carol: There was a blood stain on the sheet and some sand in the bed, could we have fresh linens on the bed. Those were the notes folks. Swear to God.
We returned to our room late that afternoon to find a note from the owners asking us to come to the main house to "discuss our problems". We thought that odd. We went to beach. Owner Carol came to beach and asked us to meet them up at her home with David, we said,, there was no problem, a meeting wasn't necessary, we just needed clean towels and sheets...she said there was a problem with a very strange look and we really needed to meet.. and then.... We went to their cottage...they had us sit in the outside porch where they accused us of writing nasty notes, Carol brought out the sheet, wanted to know, exactly where the blood was, when I said I washed it, she said with menace, oh , so you slept in it, and where did the sand come from, do we go to your house and accuse you of having dirty sheets, it was absolutely bizarre!!!!! We stated over and over this was a miscommunication problem, this was not our intent and they were relentless, they would not believe us or drop the issue. IT WAS HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! They then said they went over our cottge with a fine tooth comb and we didn't do the dishes correctly, let water drain on the cupboards, didn't flush the toilet, left the door open and probably NEXT would start complaining about bugs in the cottage. At that point, I felt like I was in Bates hotel in Pyscho and left My husband tried to rationalize with irrational people for one more minute to no avail and that was that. We had to stay... no transportation, no phones, didn't think we'd get our money back so we just enjoyed the rest of the islands for the next three days and one other family that came with children. And for the same prices as the Four Seasons, the linens and towels should be of that quality not of a Days INN or at least the respect and service. We definitely know we did not, nor would anyone else deserve to have sponsors of a hotel treat guests in that manner for asking for towels and clean sheets...EVEN if the notes WERE nasty which they were NOT. Again-go to the island and enjoy-we would NEVER stay at that establishment, and the gourmet food is all frozen thawed meat and fish, not fresh. Oh and by the way, so we can now live up to their perception of us- there was a baby scorpion and very ugly spider in the room the next two days, hmmm.

My boyfriend and I were looking for a place where we could be away from the crowds and the tourists that often seem to define the Bahamas. If you are looking for a similar experience, we cannot say enough to recommend Hotel Higgins. The food, the location, and the views are fantastic at this resort. We very much enjoyed having our own cabin; it was light, airy and had fantastic views of the bay between Stocking Island and Great Exuma. Every evening was a particular treat, when we would meet the other couples staying at the resort and enjoy a delicious 3-course meal by candlelight.

We definitely recommend to those coming to the resort to get a boat. While it is a little tricky navigating some of the narrower channels at low tide, the freedom associated with a boat can't be beat. The reefs you can snorkel at with a boat have so much more variety (and fish) that than the ones near the shore. Stocking Island also has a number of hiking trails which are fantastic and very doable over the course of a day.

  • Liked — How quiet and beautiful it was
  • Disliked — Slightly more difficult to get to

Actually this was the third time we stayed at Higgins and are presently planning our fourth visit. THE place to go to turn off the world and be pampered while doing it. Fantastic beaches, wonderful accomodations, and a five-star chef. Each time we've been there we've been spoiled for more.

My husband and I stayed at Hotel Higgins Landing for our 1st Anniversary. We so enjoyed our trip that we are returning this May for our 2nd Anniversary. Carol and Dave Higgins are outstanding hosts and made this trip wonderful! The bungalows are beautifully decorated and eco friendly. Perfectly private and all with spectacular views of the water. Our evenings were filled with wonderful food and spirits and of course watching the many shooting stars from our deck. I have been conflicted about writing reviews for this resort; not because I am disappointed with it, but rather I don't want it to become so popular that we have a difficult time making a reservation. Hotel Higgins Landing will always be a special place for my husband and I...we look forward to many repeat visits!

“Was This All Just a Bad Dream???”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2006

In November 2005 I reserved a 2 bedroom cottage for a surprise family vacation over New Year's, at Higgins Landing. I also purchased 4 non-refundable airline tickets to Exuma. From the date of my reservation, the balance was due just (3) days later. However, at the time I arranged the details of the reservation with the hotel's owner, this was not communicated. When the hotel tried to draw the balance from the same credit card they had used for the deposit 3 days earlier, it exceeded my card's limit. Rather than clearly explain what happened, or offer to take another credit card, the owner insisted the balance be wire-transferred or direct-deposited into their bank account.

I was scheduled for somewhat significant surgery when this happened, so I asked my husband to help resolve the situation. He was in another state at our business office, and had not been involved with the trip details (after all, it was supposed to be a surprise), but he agreed to complete the payment. To expedite the resolution, he suggested to Higgins Landing that he use one of his credit cards - but they denied his request. My husband is the Registered Principal and responsible for Compliance for a securities firm. Since he was aware this was a small family-owned resort outside the US, he felt their demand for a wire transfer or direct deposit was somewhat unusual. To be cautious, he insisted on using a credit card. They still refused.

Recovering from surgery, and still on medication, I spoke with the owner, but had the most insulting and rude conversation I have ever experienced. Once I understood what had happened (the deposit & balance being deducted almost simultaneously from my card), I apologized profusely, but she remained inflexible. Now, she refused to allow us to complete the payment in ANY manner! She accused us of trying to "dictate her hotel's policy" (because we had asked to use my husband's credit card), said she did not want "people like us" at her resort, called me a "despicable liar and a credit risk", and hung up on me.

By refusing to allow us to complete the payment, we were left with non-refundable airline tickets to Exuma, no place to stay (the owner said she "didn't care"), AND she kept the $2,070 deposit from my credit card, including a 15% pre-paid gratuity!

We have evidence our original dates were re-booked. Therefore, Higgins Landing has no legitimate reason to keep our deposit - yet almost 3 months later, it still has not been returned. What was a simple misunderstanding that should have been expeditiously resolved has become the most negative experience we have ever had in 30+ years of extensive travel.

We expect to recover our deposit with the assistance of the legal department of our credit card company, but will NEVER forget how we were treated by the owners of Higgins Landing, nor pass up the opportunity to tell others about it.
