We stayed at the Duck Inn in June 2010 for 1 week. John was wonderful, responsive to our every need, and a lot of fun to talk to. We stayed in the apartment over the office. It was exactly what we asked for: small, had dishes, microwave, refrigerator so we could cook our own meals, shower, comfortable bed, and QUIET. We didn't spend too much time there so we asked for the bare essentials as we knew all our time would be spent on the beach. John let us borrow a beach umbrella and chairs, and there was a cooler in the room. He even provided beach towels. There is a grill in the courtyard that we used a few times and he does have cable TV and WI-FI if you are into that sort of thing.
The pink sand beach was a bit of a hike, about a mile each way up and down hills, but so worth it. You can rent a car if you like (we did for a few days to explore the island, and Stanton is the best to rent from!) but we are in reasonably good shape so the hike wasn't a problem and we chose to walk to the beach and back every day. (and yes we did it carrying the chairs, umbrella, and cooler). The pink sand beach was beautiful, and we saw maybe one or two people a day on the beach. It was quiet and fairly secluded, which we loved. The beach that you can see from the inn wasn't as nice to swim in, but you can watch the sunset over the water there every night. It's just a short, easy walk from the inn and we walked over every evening just to watch the sunset over the ocean.
John cooked lobster and conch for us a few times, which was a nice treat. He is an excellent host, not intrusive, but there when you need something. He provides bottled water for you, as I guess the local water isn't very tasty.
If you've never been to Eleuthera, here are some things you should know. Bring cash. Credit cards are difficult to use at the businesses there. (John does take a credit card with no problems). The restaurant on the pink sand beach is nice, but VERY expensive, even for beers/drinks. Gas is about double what it is in the states, and you need cash. You should plan on tipping everyone. The road that goes from one end of the island to the other is not a good road. It will take you longer than you think to get somewhere, and it will take more gas than you expect. But don't let that stop you! The ride from the airport to the inn is actually a taxi ride, and it's about $25 plus tip. Mate & Jenny's is a great restaurant. They have excellent pizza. If you want to get away from it all and have a relaxing and quiet time, Eleuthera is for you. If you like resorts, casinos, clubs, nightlife, etc, this is probably not your island.
We will definitely stay here again!
