“Perfect! We couldn't have been happier!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2010

We stayed at the Duck Inn in June 2010 for 1 week. John was wonderful, responsive to our every need, and a lot of fun to talk to. We stayed in the apartment over the office. It was exactly what we asked for: small, had dishes, microwave, refrigerator so we could cook our own meals, shower, comfortable bed, and QUIET. We didn't spend too much time there so we asked for the bare essentials as we knew all our time would be spent on the beach. John let us borrow a beach umbrella and chairs, and there was a cooler in the room. He even provided beach towels. There is a grill in the courtyard that we used a few times and he does have cable TV and WI-FI if you are into that sort of thing.

The pink sand beach was a bit of a hike, about a mile each way up and down hills, but so worth it. You can rent a car if you like (we did for a few days to explore the island, and Stanton is the best to rent from!) but we are in reasonably good shape so the hike wasn't a problem and we chose to walk to the beach and back every day. (and yes we did it carrying the chairs, umbrella, and cooler). The pink sand beach was beautiful, and we saw maybe one or two people a day on the beach. It was quiet and fairly secluded, which we loved. The beach that you can see from the inn wasn't as nice to swim in, but you can watch the sunset over the water there every night. It's just a short, easy walk from the inn and we walked over every evening just to watch the sunset over the ocean.

John cooked lobster and conch for us a few times, which was a nice treat. He is an excellent host, not intrusive, but there when you need something. He provides bottled water for you, as I guess the local water isn't very tasty.

If you've never been to Eleuthera, here are some things you should know. Bring cash. Credit cards are difficult to use at the businesses there. (John does take a credit card with no problems). The restaurant on the pink sand beach is nice, but VERY expensive, even for beers/drinks. Gas is about double what it is in the states, and you need cash. You should plan on tipping everyone. The road that goes from one end of the island to the other is not a good road. It will take you longer than you think to get somewhere, and it will take more gas than you expect. But don't let that stop you! The ride from the airport to the inn is actually a taxi ride, and it's about $25 plus tip. Mate & Jenny's is a great restaurant. They have excellent pizza. If you want to get away from it all and have a relaxing and quiet time, Eleuthera is for you. If you like resorts, casinos, clubs, nightlife, etc, this is probably not your island.

We will definitely stay here again!

“Duck Inn exceeded expectations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 April 2010

The Duck Inn, its owners, and staff should serve as the mold by which other B&Bs are rated.

John, the owner, was extremely responsive through email regarding our reservations and requests. Reservations were a breeze, and the rates were the most reasonable on the entire island! John even booked our rental car for us over email, which was ready and waiting at Governors Harbour Airport. We hit several flight delays when traveling to Eleuthera, and John kept in touch with us via email throughout our delay to ensure that we were able to make it to the island. John was also kind enough to not charge us for the night we were unable to stay because of our flight delay.

We stayed in the Hunny Pot studio, which is outfitted with a full kitchen, queen size bed, futon, A/C, fans, ports, pans, dishes, utensils, t.v., and a fast wireless internet connection. The kitchen was very much appreciated since dinner for 3 on Eleuthera ran us over $100. Needless to say, we cooked many of our meals. The place was spotless and several maps and guides were placed on the table (which was extremely useful when trying to locate the hidden beaches of the island). We had impeccable maid service everyday - she even washed the dishes!! Lastly, there were no rooms below or above us, so we slept well every night (no noise).

The Duck Inn is not on the beach (although the Hunny Pot studio has a patio that overlooks the turquoise waters of Governors Harbour), but we perceived this as a benefit because we never had problems with the mosquitoes and no-see-ums. We only encountered bug problems when we were on or near the beach at dusk. In addition, the property is situated on the middle of the island, which makes it a convenient home base to explore (as the island is about 100 miles north to south).

I highly recommend the Duck Inn to anyone (couple or family) looking for clean and large accommodations centrally located on Eleuthera!

I can not say enough positive things about The Duck Inn. The setting is so beautiful! You really feel like you are staying in a botanical garden filled with the most beautiful flowers you have ever seen. I could not stop taking pictures. Besides that, the hosts (the Duckworth family), do everything they can to make your stay pleasant. The tips they give about beaches to visit and things to do were always right on! We stayed in Cupids Cottage and were in heaven. If you don't like the setting of hotels or resorts this is the place for you!

“wish we stayed longer.............................”

Well, it's time to write a review of this awesome place.
We stayed in the Hunnypot Studio boasting a beatiful view of the quiet Carribean Cupid Cay.
The "home" is nicely furnished with antique furniture, there was a king size bed(very comfy), there are many nooks to sit down. There is a fully equipped

kitchen. Everything works in the studio. The bathroom always has hot water and the shower is great. There is cable TV and wifi as well. The patio is lovely

to lounge around during the day and during sunset times, which are spectacular. The housekeeper really keeps the place clean and neat.

The hosts John and Katy made us feel at home from the beginning. We were invited twice to join their wonderful parties they host...and boy they are wonderful

people!!! At those events we met other Elutherians as well and that was great experience. We had fun conversations with John, Katy and their niece. The place

is quiet, peaceful,relaxing...We stayed one week and if felt it was not enough...The garden is also a real pleasure... There is a black and white cat that

occasionally comes to the patio and is very friendly, the family also has 3 dogs,if you have a chance play with the little ones -they are very cuddly....The

location of DUCKINN could't be better- very central in Governors Harbour- you can walk on foot & explore dowtown - it is a pretty town with nice houses in

tropical setting and the walk is really worthy. I recommed THE DUCK INN to anyone going to Eleuthera...

“Super Place to relax and soak in the Bahamian culture”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 November 2007

We stayed in the "HunnyPot" which is the middle of the three suits. It is on the second floor above the reception office and is extremely spacious (about twice the size of the average hotel room). It boasts a full kitchen with large fridge, stove with oven, microwave, coffee maker, blender, toaster, and place setting for at least 4 with all the pots and pans you'll need to prepare any meal. We even baked cookies. There is an abundance of spices, and John and Katy will "lend you a cup of sugar" whenever needed. John and Katy are gracious hosts, always ready to help with anything you need. There is free high speed wireless internet on the property, although it does go down every so often (it's a Bahamian ting). The Hunnypot has a king size bed, a sitting area with desk and chairs, a futon that doubles as a sofa, kitchen table and chairs, and a cozy arm chair. The bathroom has shower but no bathtub. Bring your own hair dryer, shampoo etc. There is satellite TV and we even got CBC with hockey night in Canada. There is a deck that overlooks the harbour and cupids cay and the sunsets are fantastic. The orchid garden occupies most of the grounds and is a perfect place to sit and read when the sun gets too hot. All in all, this is a place we'll definitely come back to.
