My husband and I visited the islands of Eluthera and Nassau in the Bahamas. We expected our honeymoon to be a romantic getaway on the quiet beaches of Eluthera and fun in the sun on Nassau, but our experience was quite different. Everyone spoke of Eluthera as being a gorgeous place. Agreed, the beaches were very secluded, but not worth the travel time or the expense. We stayed in the hotel called, "Unique" as well as "Cocodimama," and the highly acclaimed "The Cove." We were afraid to sleep in the bug infested rooms of "Unique." When we asked about the different hotels, everyone would say, "It's your standard Bahamian room." Apparently, that means, "this place is absolutely disgusting." Unique is owned by a Bahamian. The Cocodimama was a beautiful place and would be the place I wouldn't mind staying again. The price was fair and the rooms were cute as well as a private beach. Owned by an Italian. Far superior to The Cove. Very clean as well.

The Cove has a private beach that is very rocky, but everything there is very clean in comparison to the rest of the island. Owned by Canadians. Our experience led to mistrust and frustration of anything the Bahamians said. We'd ask for places to go and prices, but no one would give us direct answers. People would just say, "some people like that." It was so weird. They told us the Glass Window Bridge is a must see location for Eluthera. The bridge has no glass and it doesn't look like a window. The bridge looks like a temporary bridge built to last for a short time. The rock formation is nothing spectacular. You can see the Atlantic on one side and the Caribbean on the other, but it's not like you can see them at once. You have to look at one side, then the other. So, really it's just like looking at the ocean. Only you don't have to go very far to see two different ones. The roads are a disaster. Most roads don't exist. They are merely dirt roads that are not trimmed back. The main road, the Queens Highway is rough at best. You better rent a car or you'll feel marooned the whole time with no where to go.
The number one problem with Eluthera - NO FOOD. Restaurants do not exist on the island. We went to one restaurant, highly recommended by the locals. It was literally someone's kitchen. They microwaved our food. The people are so poor they park on the sides of the road or just walk and catch crab that are hiding in the ditches. That is their main source of food. Grocery stores are like little convenience stores that cost about 4 times as much as they do in America.
Moral of the story, if you decide to go to Eluthera, take all the water you'll need with you and most of the food you will want to eat. Two restaurants (both housed at the hotels of Cocodimama, and The Cove) served good food, but the price is double what a similar meal would cost in America. Potatoes, vegetables and a small portion of chicken cost $29. In the U.S. this same meal would only cost $10-12, max. I would never go there again.

Everything in the Bahamas is over priced and lacks quality. In Nassau, the city is crowded with very little sanitation. The transportation system is limited. We stayed in a suite at Orange Hill, which was a decent place to stay. Not very friendly though. Their normal rooms are pretty disgusting from what other guests told us. If you are willing to pay a lot of money, there are a few sights to see on Nassau. The day cruises and shark feeding tours are fun. Stuart Cove's is the place to go for excursions. Paradise Island is a waste of time. It was probably cool when Trump owned it, but now has wasted away.

Unfortunately, every bit of the Bahamas we saw lacked quality, but was double to four times as much of the cost of normal travel expenses. If you want the tropical experience, try Costa Rica or Hawaii - they are better quality, with more reasonable prices.

“Unique is centrally located, has excellent island food, and spectacular views of the Atlantic.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2009

Spectacular views from the upstair rooms, restaurant and all over the grounds. Lovely Atlantic side beach stretches out in front of you. Quiet, relaxing environment to while away your time off.
We have been coming to Eleuthera since 1974, have stayed all over the island, but we find Unique Village to have the best staff, excellent restaurant, gorgous views and best value on Eleutera.

“Poor maintenance, uninspiring food, and later they share your e-mail address with other former guests”

Facilities not very clean or well-maintained. Restaurant bland. No other restaurants within walking distance.

Months later got e-marketing sent to 250 former guests, all recipients listed in the TO field, so they clearly don't respect the confidentiality of guest infomation either. Let's hope they treat credit cards with more respect.

Do NOT stay here.

“Love Getaway, Magnifique”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2009

We had a blast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We planned on getting married our trip to Eleuthera....a trip we will never forget and plan on returning. On our first of seven days in Eleuthera, we met Eldred who transported us around the island. He rocks. He knew a lot of history about the island and was very informative. At the hotel, Unique Village, we were greeted by "Pauline Johnson," the manager. Already my husband had previously talked with Pauline who helped us with our preparation. Pauline is great, I felt like I knew her for years. Pauline is a comedian.
The Village Hotel was beautiful. The Hotel had villas, hotel rooms and apartment. Our villa was very spacious, clean and we had lots of privacy. It was great. Our room had huge windows with french doors. Through our doors we had great view of the pool and the ocean. Can you say wow?
My husband and I enjoyed the fact that the hotel had a restaurant. The restaurant was spacious which also overlooked the ocean. The sound of the waves was better than any music. The food was delicious. Gus, Beverly and Bridgette are hilarious. They had us rolling in laughter the entire time we were there.
As we were getting married we had to go to the courthouse to obtain paperwork. This process was a breeze. By the way, you have to be in eleuthera for 24hrs to obtain a marriage license. Bridgette, the commissioner's assistant was patient and very helpful to us. The process took about 20 minutes. It was fast and easy.
Then we met Joshua Culmer, the marriage officer, who was very professional and accommodating. Mr. Culmer took our decisions and request very seriously. He also gave us tips which we found to be very useful in our wedding. He is good.
Our wedding was previously scheduled for Dec. 23 but ending up being on the Dec. 25 which was even a better day. The weather throughout our trip was great with maybe 2 days it was cloudy but nevertheless still beautiful. Our day was beautiful, my husband and I was pleased. By the way you do need 2 witnesses for the wedding. Our witnesses was Bridgette from the restaurant and our photographer. The owner of the hotel was also present to witness our special day. It was beautiful.
Overall, everything about the hotel breathes tranquility. This was the perfect getaway for us. It was breathtaking. We planned on visiting this hotel every year for our anniversary. Check out the website you will not be disappointed. Also Pauline is always available by phone or email.

“No phone, no one at the reception, terrible!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2007

Not only the general state of the hotel was very disappointing, but also the way they (don´t) care about anything really cought our attention. The phones weren´t working for external lines. For us to make a phone call, we´d have to drive "down town" to use a pay phone. The manager was always "on the road" and so they kept us on the hands of the careless waiters of their very very very (and unworthy of) expensive restaurant. The view is nice from the balcony on the first floor rooms, but that´s it. Id´ never stay there again. I have stayed at the Cigatoo in November 2006 and I´d say that´s a much better choice in terms of cleaningness, service and location. Not to mention that the rates are better there.

Tips:
- rent a car to drive around.
- Go have lunch at Tippy´s - the best food!
- have a stroll at Nick´s point beach. On the right side facing the ocean, you might get to see the pinkiest sand beach ever (even more so than that on Pink Sand beach...)
- slow down. There´s nothing to do except enjoy the place.
