“rebuttal for Eleuthera: my sum total of 3 enjoyable years in situ”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2011

Dear Traveller;
Having chosen to visit an "out-island" please do not expect nor desire Hog Island nor Paradise Island.

Nor should you visit the Bahamas in search of "haute cuisine" - if this is what you look for on a holiday go to St Martin or St Barths.

A wonderful meal is always on tap at the Rainbow Inn (just north of GHB) or a great pizza at Mate & Jenny's ( South Palmetto Point) - do not be afraid to ask for whatever toppings float your boat - they'll accomodate if available.

To whit - those who complain about insects in their rooms :

tiny ants ; they are looking for sugar- anything sweet goes in the fridge - better yet - don't keep it in your room - OMG - the CountChoculas etc...

roaches: if there is nothing for them, they'll be gone - be tidy

geckos: not insects - learn to love them - they eat all of the critters...

To the couple who complained about prices on the Island -

i) study the economics of supplying an (small) island by ship
ii) buy the fallow pineapple plantation north of J.C. and operate it as a co-operative
iii) try St Martin (hah)
or
iv) be silent

I was fortunate in that I worked on this island for some 3 years; I enjoyed (with very few "off moments") my entire time there.

This accolade is not written just for U.V.; but more for North Palmetto Point et al
and all of the American Airlines/USAir/Bahamas Airlines ladies who made my life so much more pleasant!

TIA

Katherine

“We hated it.”

This place had cock roaches. It was a big one too.
They were not very friendly either. One woman was out of the three.
Tiny ants in the sheets. The beds are really awful.
Was glad to be out of there!

“Very Difficult to Find, Off the Beaten Path, Breathtaking View”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 March 2011

Unique Village lives up to it's name. It's not fancy but the rooms are nice and the view is gorgeous. You can't help but relax when you get there, however getting there is an adventure in and of itself. The best thing to do is stop and ask people as maps are no help. The people who live around North Palmetto Point are wonderful - always sweet and accomodating. We really enjoyed our trip to Eleuthera, the only thing that really bothered us was all of the garbage - it's everywhere. We picked it up off the beaches constantly - if you can see past the trash it is beautiful.

One Note: the restaurant is horrible- don't waste your time or money - the food is all frozen and not worth the pricetag that comes with it. The view from the restaurant is great - have wine or a drink on the deck but go somewhere else for dinner. Mate & Jenny's is good for pizza and a Goombay Smash and it's only a few minutes drive from the hotel. Best place for breakfast hands down is the local bakery in Governors Harbor - the donuts and breakfast sandwiches are soooooo yummy! There is also a great grocery store in Governors Harbor that has basic necessities for a decent price.

Things to do: You have to rent a "wreck" I mean car...just don't expect it to be new or have air in the tires!!! As long as it gets you from point a to point b that is all that matters. Don't bother with the ocean hole - unless you feel like giving $$$'s to locals begging for cash. We went to see fish but didn't see anything. Do head up to take a water taxi over to Harbor Island - seeing the beaches up there and having a cocktail at Sip Sip were a major highlight of our trip. Also - spend sometime at Ten Bay Beach - it is the nicest beach and the water is calm and warm. It's only a few minutes from the hotel on the Caribbean side and it's gorgeous! Also the front desk at Unique Village has snorkel equipment you can borrow for free - just check it out before you go as it's not in the best shape. One other to do: the pool is amazing just know that there is a solar cover that you need to take off and put back on yourself but it's worth having it on as it keeps the pool a balmy 85 degrees and that is much warmer than the Atlantic!!!

Room Tip: Ask for 2nd floor - great view!

“Perfectly tranquil and just what we wanted”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2010

Unique Village was an incredible find-- though the location is a bit off the beaten path, after a day or two there we realized just how perfect the location was. It was a short car ride from the airport and for our first night there, we wandered up the secluded beach and found a bar that made the best pina coladas ever! We swam, sunbathed and snorkeled right below the pool on the beach and then relaxed by the pool at dusk. Our room and balcony looked over the ocean and we could gaze out onto the water without leaving the bed!
For a change of pace, we could walk into town easily to get groceries, get a sandwich, ice cream, etc. or we could ride bikes to South Plametto point to snorkel and swim at a beach on the Caribbean side and get pizza at a delicious local place. Another day, we rode bikes all the way into Govenernor's Harbour (4+ miles one way) and saw breathtaking views along the coast. Don't miss the local fish fry and the Rum Bubbas on Friday nights in Governor's Harbour!
We would definitely go back there. Only downside was that we could not get cell phone reception....not really a big deal to us. The staff let us use their phone. If you really want to relax and you like outdoor adventures and local culture, stay here!

“Great simple place on a gorgeous beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 March 2010

The room are clean and comfortable, the restaurant is airy and has superb views, the swimming pool is perfect, and the beach wonderful. Some of the negative reviews of this place reflect the limitations of the writers not those of the hotel. If the reviewer cannot even spell the name of the island, how can one possibly trust their judgement?
