We stayed at The Cove in May for 5 nights before driving down to the house we rented in Governor's Harbour for a week. The location is good for exploring the north side of the island, glass bottom bridge, Preacher's Cave, ferry to Harbour Island, etc. The hotel was fine and the restaurant staff was really great--so friendly and with hilarious stories--but that didn't make up for the short-fallings of the room. I think the biggest problem is that The Cove's website makes it seem like something it is not so when you arrive, it's a bit disappointing.
Here's the thing--The Cove is pretty representative of the island of Eleuthera. We LOVED Eleuthera but it is not an island that you go to for luxury and stylish design, pampering, the finest bed linens, etc. If you go to the Cove with this reality in mind, you won't be disappointed and I don't think the website should be so misleading in their pics and descriptions.
The rooms are very, very simple, bed with blanket, white wicker dresser, nightstands. It does have A/C, which was great. The bathroom was unfortunately not very clean when we arrived which really bummed me out. The door didn't fit right in the door frame so the bottom was shredded wood from getting stuck.
There are two areas of beach with chairs and umbrellas and even a kayak. The beach is a bit rocky and has some sharp shells, we even found some shards of glass. You can get scuba gear and towels from the front desk for free. The water is very calm, crystal clear, and we saw starfish and pretty colorful fish along the points.
The food at the restaurant is good but very expensive. We ate dinner there most nights because I was a little worried about driving at night in the dark on the left side of the road with no street lights and in our funny little rental car. Especially when you see all the skid marks on the highway that go off into nowhere. We spent a lot of money on food but we were entertained by our servers who were all very sweet and funny (especially Christine!) and of course, Wallace, the infamous bartender.
It's the kind of place where all the guests staying there get to know each other and end up hanging out together at the restaurant. We were on our honeymoon and that's not really our thing anyway, so we were probably known as the aloof New Yorkers.
Bottom line, I wouldn't tell anyone NOT to stay there, but just be aware of what it's really like. And if you do go, Wallace makes the most amazing Smashes EVER!! It's certainly worth having lunch or dinner there even if you decide to stay someplace else.
