There are few greater pleasures than sitting on the terrace of the Greenwood Beach Resort on Cat Island, looking across blinding white sand to the incredibly blue Atlantic, coconut palms swaying in the breeze, drinking good coffee and eating the perfect breakfast omelette. There, I’m getting carried away. Seriously though, places like this are, for me, what the Bahamas is about. The unobtrusive, courteous company of the Illing family – whichever members are in residence at the time – is an added bonus. Besides the beach – miles of it – there are many facilities available – dive shop, bikes to ride, excellent fresh water swimming pool and so on. I was there in September – out of season – for two nights. It was all over much too soon. By the way, if you can talk someone into introducing you for an occasional meal at the Sweet Tamarind, a small restaurant in Port Howe run by Daisy Hunter who used to cook at Greenwood, there is no better place for a cracked conch or grouper fix. Sweet Tamarind seems to be the nearest thing on Cat Island to a local pub, so meals there tend to become extended social events.
