“absolutey heaven june 2009, new york”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 June 2009

we just returned from 5 days at Dolphin Beach Resort and were beyond delighted. From the moment we stepped off the ferry and were met by Lubin and brought to our cottage we were enthralled. Our cottage, Ocean Temple was unique and just what we hoped for. Private deck and steps to an almost deserted beach crystal clear ocean and incredible weather. If you are looking for a peaceful, totally relaxing vacation, this is the place. The cottage is clean, comfortable and totally quiet. Definitely buy food and drinks in Marsh Harbor as the only grocery store is rather expensive and limited. The Art Cafe is a great place for breakfast and lunch. Everyone at Dolphin Beach was friendly and full of good tips. enjoy the pool, walk on the almost deserted beach, find seashells and just relax and enjoy. I wish we never had to leave but will be back. ENJOY!!! and forget about the craziness of everyday life.

“Perfect Out Island Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2008

We loved staying at Dolphin Beach. We stayed in Sail Loft and loved having our own private deck right on the dune. We ate breakfast every morning watching sunrise over the Atlantic with the beach to ourselves. It is a perfect quaint beach escape. Nippers, and Docksiders are two great places on the island to eat and there are many places to snorkle right from the beach. Troy and Maria at Dive Guana are great for any of your Diving and Boat Rental needs! The staff is always willing to help and could not have been more friendly. We loved it and will return often. Great Guana Cay is perfect!!!

“Great Stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 January 2008

this resort is really the only place to stay on Guana Cay. There are a couple other places, but not as nice as the Dolphin Beach Resort. The resorts grounds are beautiful and the houses are all beautiful. Dont expect tv although they do have them in all rooms, They have a large video collection at the front office since there is no night life. You can use internet in the front office as well. A golf cart is a must on the island unless you want to walk everywhere which isnt realistic. Yes it is a small island but you definitnely cannot walk everywhere! The most amazing part of the resort is the beach. The only person is you and maybe the guests from the house near you. The beach is untouched and beautiful. The islands people are more than generous and welcoming as are many bahamian islands. There are 5 places to eat on the island. We only ate at 2 most of the time. Dockside grille which everything was excellent every single night! This is more of a place to eat at night. And then there is the FAMOUS NIPPERS!!!! This is the most famous restaurant in the Bahamas and only bahamians and people who frequent the bahamas alot know about it. This is a must go to for lunch, ESPECIALLY ON SUNDAYS!!!! that is when they have their party. Everyone on the island plus surrounding islands and people even come in from the states and anchor the boats in the bay come for this event! The other restaurants are a cafe by the bay, orchid bay marina (we never went to), and Grabbers which is a definite NO! We ate here one night. The food was horrible number one after we did not receive it for (no joke) 3 hours! everyone elses meal took around the same. It took 45 minutes to get drinks. Finally we spoke with the owner who was drunk and she cursed us out, even though we were incredibly nice to her. Please do not give them your business! If you have any questions please feel free to contact me!

“Beware........the Nippers”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 June 2006

My husband, myself and our two children (ages 3 and 5) spent 7 nights on Great Guana Cay (Dolphin Beach Resort). The resort and staff at the resort were very friendly, however the bugs (Nippers) are an absolute nuisance!! My advise can only be: bug spray! bug spray! bug spray ! 24 hours a day. Unfortunately we had 2 days of major thunderstorms, and I'm not sure if the rain contributed to the number of "invisible monsters" !?! Also, prices on the island are extremely expensive.....come prepared to spend! The beaches are beautiful (although covered with seaweed !), the swimming is tranquil, the snorkelling is fare (fish are a bit scarce), the Nipper Trippers (a cocktail at Nippers) are lethal...DO NOT HAVE MORE THAN 2... trust me!! If you are travelling with children, a golf cart is essential, as the bicycles are far to large for little ones. As mentioned earlier, Dolphin Beach Resort's staff are wonderful, but we feel that they could teach quite a few of the other islanders a few lessons in happiness. In general the handful of restaurants on the islands seem to employ the rudest and unfriendliest women as waitresses!! Still can't understand how some of those women keep their jobs? Nippers is a wonderful place to spend a hot afternoon. Our children loved swimming in the ocean and playing on the beach and then going to Nippers to cool off in the swimming pool, while we enjoyed their music and had a few drinks with our newly made friends. A trip with Troy and Rory from Dive Guana is also a must!! We all had a wonderful time and Rory even dived a few Conch, and made a very tasty Conch salad for all of us to try. Delicious!! In a nut shell...we are glad to have experienced the Bahamas, but are now completely convinced that we live in a country with the friendliest people and most beautiful beaches!! South Africa!!

“Ahhh.....The Private Island Experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 May 2006

We went to Great Guana due to Caribbean Travel and Leisure's Ultimate Beach Issue in February 2005. It was a truly unique experience. The 1st place we've ever been to that you cannot fly into. You can only get to Great Guana by boat. You land at the airport in Marsh Harbor, bGreat Abaco and take a 10 minute taxi ride to the dock where you catch the ferry to the island. Thank you to all the travelers who advised us to do all of our shopping in Great Abaco. HUGE price difference!!! Buy the food and spirits you'll need for your stay BEFORE you get on the ferry otherwise, you'll pay a lot more for the same items with significantly less selection. There's a huge US type market close to the ferry, the taxi will take you and wait. Arriving at the Great Guana dock, we were met by a driver from the Dolphin who got us to the property in about 8 minutes. The property was a dream come true. Quaint, small, the walkways, laced with foliage. It was sooooooo lovely which is why I take the time to write this review almost a year later. Our home away from home, "Rory's Cottage" named for the owner's son was on a glorious beach with an incredible view of the sea and sky. You don't use keys here, the island is that safe. It was like living in a studio cottage. The bathroom left a lot to be desired, but if you want a Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton, go there instead. The housekeeping is definitely indifferent. I could do a much better job but something is better than nothing. We wanted peace and tranquility, to be off the beaten path and that's where you are at the Dolphin. Our cottage had it's own kitchen, porch facing the ocean, barbeque grill and private entry to the beach with a sign at the landing at the top of the stairs marked, "Private". We made our own breakfast every day and I started each morning with a dip at the pool at about 6AM when no one is in sight but the resident pelican. We rented a golf cart and had a real blast tooling around the island. Rebecca and the other woman who ran the office were always very helpful. The video library on site is really good, I saw a few movies I'd meant to catch in theatres and missed. Sunrises were breathtaking. You get to know folks as there are less than 150 who live on the island year round. Folks wave as they pass your golf cart. Troy, Maria, Bella and their other daughter, a real sweetie, made us feel so at home. We did 3 excursions with them, the full day to Harbor Island (do climb to the top of the ligthhouse) and Man-o-War Cay; a drop off on Baker's Bay where we had the beach all to ourselves for a totally romantic afternoon and saving the best for last, a trip where we went snorkeling over the remains of a shipwreck. I saw things I've never seen in the sea. Nurse sharks, barracuda, huge manta rays, beautiful reefs and schools of pretty fish in and out of the remains of the shipwreck and reefs. Everyone everywhere was so nice. Locals and tourists will ask you for a lift on your golf cart and it's fun to help out. Sunday at Nippers was surreal, suddenly there are dozens of people on the beach and boats anchored off shore for the weekly boar roast. Brendel, a famous divemaster from Green Turtle Cay was holding court. It was like a celebrity sighting. The food is good at Nippers, the Saturday barbeque at Guana Seaside Village where my husband loved the ribs is another must. The island Blue Water Grill is pretty tasty, but go early as they run out of things and don't serve very late. The view of the water is really pretty and they have good bar service. There's another great restaurant whose name I can't remember, but the food was the best on the island. It's in a gated community with it's own marina. Great food, great drinks, extremely slow service!!!! Ask it's down the road from the main street in The Settlement, the town on the island. This island is for true island lovers who don't want crowds, all inclusives or all the comforts of homes. From the upper level of Nippers you can see the Atlantic and the Sea of Abaco at the same time. This is a special haven, if you're looking for a slice of paradise lost plan to make a trip to Great Guana Cay. Just be prepared for seeing sharks in the water and be very very cautious on where you swim and the time of day!!!! Everyone we met had a shark tale, so swimming in these waters is not for the faint hearted. Nurse sharks are what you'll encounter primarily, but as I learned here, barracuda are more likely to bite you and they can get pretty large, so don't swim to close to them. Be sure not to wear anything shiny when you're in the water as well. I wish you a wonderful trip we extended our stay we were so enthralled by the island but I want your trip to be a safe one. Each cottage has a jornal for opinions from anyone who's ever stayed there and I was happy to share my thoughts on what a wonderful holiday our time on Great Guana had been. Bon chance!
