“Not what I thought”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

I would start off by saying the people in Freeport are really friendly and welcomming.

The hotel was for sure a 3 star. Upon check in at this ALL INCLUSIVE resort we were charged $20 to use the safe in our room. Our mini fridge was empty and remaind that way the entire trip. I inquired to the front desk stating the advertisement stated that our mini fridge would be stocked with refreshments, pop and water daily but the front desk told me that is only in certain packages and that if we wanted we could purchase refreshments in the drug store on the resort. All inclusive ????
Our friends were also given a pool view room when the paid the extra for ocean view. The shower in this room also would not turn on without using both hand and a foot on the wall to pull the tap. When they explaind this to the front desk they were told they could see the ocean from where they were. They waited until 4pm the next day to get the accomodations they booked in the first place.
Our room was a typical hotel room. We had bran new beds put in the room the 2nd night there making it extremely comfortable. The bathroom had a spacious shower and counter top. If you let the water run for a few minutes before hoping in you could have a nice shower every day. The balcony was nice with 2 chairs and a table. We did however have to re-attach our screen sliding door when we got there because it was just sitting on the balcony. The room looked right onto the beach and ocean giving us an incredible view.
The house keeping of the rooms could use some work. I liked to have coffee in the room in the Am while wating for my boyfriend to wake up and I had to chase down the house keeper daily to restock the coffee in the room. Also there was constantly a shortage of towels. I had to beg for a face cloth and finally got one after four days. We were only left with 2 shower towels most of the time having to ask for a floor matt, hand towels and face clothes. It became very frustrating especially because we were leaving tips for them daily.
The bartenders were fast and always happy. The entertainers were very friendly trying to make everyone happy throughout the day. It almost felt like an adult day camp though. I prefered to read my book.
The buffet was ok. There was always something on it we could fill up on. The buffet was somewhat open to the outside allowing birds to come in and fly around. The only bothersome part of that was there was some netting higher up that the birds would get caught in and die. We watched a lot of little birds during meals. It was really sad.
The Italian restaraunt was our fav. After the Japanese restaraunt we all went to the buffet. The snack bar on the beach was decent and the pizzarea was soooooo good. It was my fav food there.
The beach was gorgeous. Lots of shells and fish to see while snorkelling. If the weather was a little nicer I would have spent all my time there. There are bars up the beach on both sides of the resort. Banana Bay is to the left when facing the water. We enjoyed the crab cakes, calamari and famous babana bread. It's a little pricy but really good.
We went on the evening cruze and the eco walking tour of the caves and Golden Rock beach. There was a board walk there with lots of fish to feed. Also baby raccoons that are very friendly. They come right up to you and eat out of your hands. The beach there was pure sand. The weather was terrible but I had to go in the water there it was so clear blue. After that they take you to Banana Bay for some grub. That's how we discovered it was right up the beach. The market in Port lucaya was also fun. Most of the vendors sold the same stuff. We went to the After Deck for lunch. Again very pricey but the best fish n chips I ever had.
Freeport itself is kind of a boring Island. There's no wildlife except the raccons and ocean fish to be seen. We were also told this on the way to the hotel so I don't feel bad saying it. I wouldn't reccomend the Island or the Viva Fortuna Resort to anyone. Not compared to the few other places I've been too. Other than Golden Rock Beach and the really great people of Freeport, it was rather dissapointing. This is comming from somone who doesn't have high expectations and has a good time everywhere I go. Don't spend the money to go there.

Room Tip: The B section just got all new beds and looks right out onto the beach.

“Decent Amenities... Inconsistent Service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

I stayed here with cousins for a week in January and it had it's perks and it's downfalls.

Location - It was a $20 cab ride to the International Market... not much to see around the area other than the resort itself.

Beach - had nice clean white sand and plenty of palapas and chairs for everyone. The water was cold and it was pretty rocky in the water so I highly suggest watershoes

Rooms - Rooms were basic but clean. Sheets were changed only once when were there and the beds were uncomfortable. But for a 3.5 star -- I was generally pleased with the rooms

Restaurants - I was pleasantly surprised that the food was palatable. It was definitely not gourmet but I always found something good to eat. The egg station was great. The grill on the beach was awesome. Chinese restaurant was decorated beautifully but the food was only fair. Italian restaurant was delicious -- highly recommend to reserve this place for dinner and the pizza after 11pm was AMAZING and worth staying up and waiting inline for!

Other Included Perks - There were kayaks and catamarans (free lessons!!) and a trapeze which was great. We were able to get free WiFi in our rooms and sometimes in the beach which was very convenient.

Service (along with alcohol) - I found the service here would most likely be the reason I would not recommend this place. Ofcourse there were a handful that were friendly (usually the servers/hostesses in the restaurants) but for the most part, most of the bartenders, housekeepers and bellboys were rude (and did not even thank you for tipping). They used very cheap alcohol,,, I had to water down all my drinks (which I don't usually do) because it tasted like rubbing alcohol.

All in all... we made the best of our vacation and we had a blast but I'm sure we would have loved to recommend this place and enjoyed it a bit more if the service was more consistent and friendly.

Room Tip: A Block if you want WiFi

“Just a couple of disappointments but had an amazing time.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

First off, Thank you for making our experience a good one. My husband and I had an amazing time. The staff treated us as old friends and we met many wonderful people during our stay. The resort is beautiful and the rooms were comfortable and clean....We were disappointed and turned off by a couple of things though..1. upton checking in we were told we had to make all of our reservations for dinner to eat at any of the restaurants on the resort. We were vacationing and didn't want to make a decision right then "where and when" we wanted to eat our dinners... After we made all of our reservations a lady named "Doreen" talked to us about attending a presentation meeting. We clearly were not interested in listening to the presentation. I made it PERFECTLY clear to her the 4 times that we ran into her during our stay. Doreen was way to aggressive in her approach and that was a TOTAL turn off!! We came to the resort to vacation, not to get information on time sharing. She made us feel very uncomfortable whenever we crossed paths with her... 2. When we arrived to our room their were NO towels. Our neighbor also was complaining that they had no towels..It took half an hr for the staff to get us some....3. I was really disappointed to learn you don't offer native foods on the resort. No conch salad anywhere to be found on the resort. So, if you want it, you'll have to travel outside of the resort. Other than those couple of things our stay was a good experience and we had a wonderful time.

We would like to thank you for choosing Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach Resort for your vacation destination.

We are pleased to read how you enjoyed our beautiful beach and all the amenities and activities provided for you and your partner.

We are in constant training with all our staff members in each department, by reading your review, this can help us to maintain and improve for the better in the future. Thank you for your candor and your patience with us. We appreciate and wish to retain our valued patrons.

Regarding the matter of housekeeping please be assured that we have more than sufficient supplies of towels and linens and terribly regret any inconvenience, not to mention discomfort in this regard.

Concerning the lack of local food, we have a Bahamian night every Wednesday in our main restaurant, where you will be able to taste local foods, in addition to this we organize cooking lessons where you learn to cook conch salad. We would like as well to let you know, that as an resort with international clientele we need to try to accommodate all our guests, therefore our cuisine offers a great variety of options every day in meats, pasta, fish, salads, desserts and appetizers. Although we truly regret you could not find something of your preference.

On behalf of the staff and management here at Viva Wyndham Fortuna, we would like to thank you once again, for your positive review and for your generous hospitality.

“Manage your expectations and you'll enjoy”

We just got back from our trip to the Bahamas. We had read a mixture of reviews so we knew not to expect five star hotel quality at a 3-star locale. We were right on the money! When we first got our room they gave us one of those fold out beds. We simply called and asked for a change of room. Without any issues, attitude or apprehension they switched us. The new room had a few minor issues- phone didn't work and the screen was hard to open but who goes to the Bahamas to stay in a room? Was it the most beautiful place ever? No but it was far from a rat hole. If your intention is to have a clean place to rest while doing things on vacation (i.e excursions, pool, beach, restaurants, shopping, etc.) then it was fine! The staff was really friendly and accommodating. The live show although very amateur was fun. The food was ok not fine dining but typical of resorts. The pool was clean, the beach pristine and tons of activities to do. We were close to other things in the area and taxi's were easy to catch. Overall, we got what we paid for- a 3-star hotel that we enjoyed. Good value for money!
