“Coral Beach is a decent location but...”

My husband and I rented a Coral Beach condo for a week at the end of January. It's an older complex, I think built in the 60s, but they keep it up pretty good. The pool out by the beach is nice with the bar/restaurant. We don't believe the restaurant should be rated #1 but they do serve pretty good food and the service is friendly. We were disappointed that they don't take plastic. The complex was further from the Marketplace than we were led to believe. It's 1 1/2 miles down the road, with no sidewalks, and the speed limit we were told is just a "suggestion". There is a sign in the lobby warning tourists not to walk the road after dark. The buses don't run after dark and are just privately owned vans which are filthy with no functional seat belts. Taxis are expensive. Many of the businesses have closed due to the poor economy. There is NO grocery store within walking distance of the complex. After a couple of days, we rented a car.

The big disappointment was the condition of the condo. We rented one from VRBO that had a couple of good reviews. I suspect the owners can pick and choose which reviews they post on VRBO. The condos with many, many good reviews on TripAdvisor were already booked. The owner of our condo, who lives in the states, seemed to be a professional and responsible property owner. OUR ADVICE IS...only rent from condo owners who FREQUENTLY visit their condos themselves and who have SEVERAL good reviews on TA! We arrived to a dirty condo and the owner's excuse was that they have a difficult time finding good help in the Freeport area. We had to clean the tub & shower and kitchen sink before we used them. The floor was not clean. The bed was supposed to be just two years old but it was the worst bed we have ever slept in. The wall unit air conditioner sounded like an airplane landing every time the compressor came on. The smoke alarm had no battery in it and was hanging from the wall. This is not what we're used to. The owner gave us our cleaning fee back and an extra $100 refund but we were stuck there for a week. Since we did receive some of our money back, I won't mention the condo number.

We regret that we didn't stay at the Sunrise Resort & Marina as we had originally planned. We thought we could save money by not having to rent a car.

Room Tip: Do lots of research!!!

“Wonderful view and location”

We took two of our young adult kids and their significant others to Grand Bahama Island over New Year's for a week. We took advantage of the new flights on Vision Air (a great experience, by the way) directly from RDU to Freeport. With us footing the bill, we wanted to stay in a cottage or condo on the beach so that we could fix most of our meals at home. About the end of July I started looking and there were not that many cottages/condos available with at least 3 bedrooms and two baths, especially since I decided we should stay within walking distance of at least some of the clubs for the younger members of the family. I believe that I found this condo on the TripAdvisor site, read the reviews, e-mailed back and forth with the owner, and decided this was the best bet for us. So here is the review.
This condo has a funny layout but one of the best and biggest terraces with an ocean view that you will ever find - about 200 degree view with a couple of other building in the way at one side. We spent a lot of time, including midnight on New Year's Eve out on this amazing terrace with a big table, grill and lounge chairs.
The master bedroom was a good size with a reasonably nice bathroom (more on this later) and a bit of a view. It adjoins a tiny room with bunk beds, good for young kids. We used it for our luggage. The other two bedrooms were medium sized and shared a bathroom.
The living room is very big with comfy furniture. The kitchen is pretty nice with the usual rental mix of abused pots and pans. The fridge smelled horribly of fish when we arrived (late) but the condo manager came herself and cleaned it out the next day.
The bathrooms were a bit shabby - one was being redone after some flooding which they apologized about. The master room bathroom is OK, but has a broken sauna through a door off of the bathroom and junk seems to have been just thrown in there. Same with the master bedroom closet.
So, the place is nice, with an amazing view and terrace but the upkeep is uneven.
They had cards, poker chips, games, etc. and several nights we actually had whole family matches.
The Coral Beach "resort" is also a mix: the entrance is rather bare and it looks like there were small shops there at some point in time but now those spaces are just empty.
The pool is pretty and overlooks the beach but it was too cold for all of us. The beach however was beautiful for swimming, walking, and awesome snorkeling just off shore a bit up the beach. The small pool restaurant and bar was lively with pretty good food and an active late night bar scene for the over 40's.
You can also rent the owner's van along with the apartment if you wish. We did and it was very useful but not in good shape and finally died before the end of the week. The owner did refund us part of the money which we appreciated. Next time I would find out what a rental from a car rental company would cost and see which was better. We went kayaking in the national park - great fun, and to a beach on the way to the East End that was almost deserted with a good beach bar and restaurant. Also, we needed the van to buy (very expensive) groceries and to find fresh fish.
Overall, if you are not too picky about having a place in perfect shape, it was a wonderful place for a family or group of friends to stay and we will probably go back. Happy to answer questions.

we had a nice 2 bedroom condo here. Nice place, clean and safe. the beach bar made some really good chicken on the bbq. also bought some fresh lobsters that some kids caught and the chef cooked them up for us with some sides for a few bucks. happy hour prices were great. the beach was white sand and palm trees and some days we were the only people on it. had a great family trip

“Coral Beach Condo #3304”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2011

We rented this Condo in early August 2011 for 5 nights and were quite pleased. The location could not be better, you can walk down the beach to Port Lucaya to shop or dine easily. It is a short cab ride from the airport ($22.00 and 15 minutes). The condo was clean and comfortable, linens fresh, and the kitchen, though small, had ample pots, pans, dishes , etc for use. The A/C blew cold so the room was very comfy in the August heat. We could not have asked for a better place to stay, a great value and a really nice little condo. The view from the Balcony was nice but the beach is where you want to be to look at the Ocean! It is BEAUTIFUL! There were not very many people on it, it is literally all yours and the water was a aqua blue that you see in magazines. Beach chairs are a bit of an issue, you need to rent them from the Condo Association people and they collect them and lock them up too early in my opinion, we want to get every minute on the beach possible. The little Tiki Huts on the beach are great! The pool is right next to the Beach so if you are timid about going into the Ocean you can take a quick cool off dip easily. The Beach Bar is perfect! Great food, better than most of the places in Port Lucaya and they serve all the drinks you could want. The staff is friendly and attentive. This is a nice quiet place to stay, the building itself has been greatly updated in the past few years and is still undergoing some improvements. All in all Coral Beach is a great place to stay and we will absolutely be back at this condo again next year! A great value for your dollar.

“Good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

My family rented a condo from Vrbo this summer for a week in Freeport. This is a great location all condos individually owned Great price ocean front property but most units are not ocean view. Only dissapointment was we had no view at all Our unit was just completely updated very nice but some of the hallways and units needed to be updated. The ocean was beautiful pool and grounds very nice rode public bus a lot but very unpredictable when the buses would come by. This property is a great value when u rent from an owner and u can't go wrong!
