We would rate our experience at 3.5 stars. Why so, you ask? We stayed from February 5 to 9, 2012, inclusive (four nights).Departing Halifax at 5:15 pm (about 30 minutes late), we arrived in Nassau three hours and 40 minutes later. The aircraft is a 757 operated by Jazz, but under the Thomas Cook banner. While Sunquest offered a shuttle service from the airport to the hotel, we recommend that you take a taxi. It is worth the fare as you receive a personalized tour along the way that was quite informative. Based on the information from Pedro Dean, our driver, we were able to begin planning our adventures for the coming days. One of the last to find their luggage at the terminal, we were the first to arrive and check in at the hotel. The fare was $ 35.00; the benefit of arriving before a bus load of other guests...priceless! We were quickly off to the buffet for supper (it closes at 10:00). Another guest told us she spent two hours waiting to be registered.
We went to our room. The safe was not working. After contacting the Front Desk, the night manager,Anita, arrived almost immediately, as in less than two minutes. She tested the safe and told us the portable battery needed to be replaced. While a non functional safe is a problem, I appreciated that it had its own power supply, which would be handy in the case of power loss to the building. So, Anita uses her portable radio to contact maintenance. Two friendly gentlemen arrive, and hand us two new room keys. Apparently the wall paper in the bathroom was scheduled to be changed and they had believed it was completed prior to our check in. So, we move three doors down. A little inconvenient as my partner had all of her goodies unpacked. A little slower, my procrastination saved me. It was worth the trek as we had no guests in the adjoining rooms...the thin walls were not a concern. Although, we were prepared with extra soft, spongy ear plugs! Anyway, we went to the beach. Imagine an adult sized kitty litter box, and you have the right visual. Not that there was anything unsavoury in the sand (only saw one cat), but it is small. The boardwalk was an enjoyable walk, but short. It was the only resort we saw that had a boardwalk, so hats off to the PIHR. All in all, the room was clean, mopped regularly, and fresh towels daily. However, it was in need of some TLC, as suggested by the rusting towel racks, cracked toilet and drooping sink. In hindsight, it was actually the bathroom that was in need of repair. OK, the pillows were a little hard but that is a personal preference. The food was very good to excellent in the buffet. If you like seafood salads, we highly recommended their crab salad. Definately worth going for seconds. Typically, there were seven hot dishes, usually with a fish, a beef or pork, chicken and or ribs, and rice, along with vegetables. If you want to take a lunch with you, bring Baggies as there is a good selection of meats, cheese and condiments with various breads and bagels. Outstanding were the desserts. Yummy, yummy, yummy. They were all good. The pastry chef really knows their stuff. Cheese cakes were common, along with pineapple upside down cake, raisin or chocolate chip cookies, chocolate cake (watch out for the icing as it tastes like more), and a bevy of hot and cold drinks. Red and white wine are on tap, they have decaffinated tea (the special drink of someone), soft drinks, juices, coffee, hot chocolate, and amazing orange juice. Yes, vacation means enjoying a good buffet. The specialty restaurant was also a delight with quick service, and a nice menu. Book the specialty restaurant that day with the morning buffet staff. The staff in both restaurants are friendly and helpful. Yes, they may not always fill your water glass. But, if you tip them, the service improves dramatically. Keep in mind the unemployment rate on the island is 15.9 % so good paying jobs are scarce. Bohemian families are also large, with six children being common. Anyway, we were disappointed in the frugality of most guests who likely tip when home.
For the brave and energetic, the hotel is ideally situated. It is a brief walk to Cabbage Beach, a beautiful, natural sand beach (no cat sightings). The further East you go, the fewer the people and the more privacy you have. We avoided the jet ski and banana boat rental area as it was loud and we didn't want to witness a female tourist punch out a rental agent when she believed she was ripped off. You should plan on seeing the Cloister, and the Versailles Garden, both about a 10 minute walk. There are two bridges, each an enjoyable challenge to walk over. Why wait for the ferry when you can get some good cardio. Again, about a 10 minute walk over the bridge. The aquarium at Atlantis is a must. If you walk into town, the best tourist shops are across from cruise ship docks. You won't need a map to find it, just follow the traffic. The main shopping mall is the Marathon Mall, about 3 miles from PIHR. Another good walk. Overall, a great trip. We had good weather. We would certainly return.
