“Again - you get what you pay for... literally.”
Just got back from this resort. Stayed Feb 2-5 for $515pp. With that being said, I would not have paid more for this trip. If you are in this price range, then this is a good vacation for you.
For general background purposes (so you know where I'm coming from that I am comparing this place to), I have generally stayed at 3 star places in Mexico, DR, St. Lucia, and Cuba. We are in the age group of 25-30. We are not too picky, and were looking to try a budget vacation on an expensive island. Also, with that being said, we will not do budget again. lol.
Here is a general review of the resort iteself:
PROS
- Cheap
- Clean rooms. Very basic. Bed was comfortable and AC and safe worked. The tv cuts out often, but we were only watching it when we getting ready for dinner, or late at night, so doesn't really matter too much. (we lucked out as ours had no mould, rust, or too bad of a musty smell, however I heard stories from others in the hotel). BUT, I wouldn't want to see whats above those ceiling tiles! Room was 502. Had a nice side view of the ocean and faced the tennis courts. Good room - FYI.
- Front desk staff was very nice.
CONS
- Food selection. Was VERY minimal. Breakfast was best meal of day - made to order omlettes, bacon, sausages, pastries, waffles you make yourself. Dinner was the worst. Lots of rice, some weird slop stuff that we obviously didn't try, fish was very good. The salad bar was very good also.
- Drinks. Very basic. But what do you expect? Just extrememly sugary slushi with booze.
- Seagulls. People were pretty slobbish and this wouldnt have been a problem if they picked up after themselves. Food would be left everywhere and LOTS of seagulls take over. Food and drinks were also left all over the hot tub and pool area and was pretty disgusting.
- Garbages. These were rarely emptied. It can become a problem. Plus its just gross.
- The Locals. Once Saturday hits, the locals buy the all-inclusive option and the kids literally over-run the place. This was annoying, and they were a little rude and very demanding.
- Entertainment in general. Don't expect any. Except Bingo and karakoe. There was a make-shift dance floor in the lobby at night.
- A la Carte. This is funny... The place is huge but they only accept 4 tables and hour and its only open 4 hours. Make your reservation early in the morning in the buffet if you're interested. Steak was good.
- Hot tub. Was pretty warm one night, the rest it was colder than the air. : (
- Hot water in room. It was hot one night, but was just warm the others. I heard from others that they had only cold water; this is only hearsay though.
- ROOM NOISE. Hallways are very loud, stay away from rooms at the elevator. 502 was good. They decided to put a friggin bed together at 5am on Satuday morning though in the room next door. VERY strange. Needless to say we were up.
- Beach chairs. There are very few and the blue ones by the pool really are quite worn; they sag very low past the plastic back part and could be uncomfortable. It didnt bother us, but it's worth mentioning.
Beach was ok. Does the trick. Has some palm trees and a swimming area. The resort faces the rough-looking marina, but its not that bad. The weather for us was a little cool. For once, pack a sweatshirt and jeans - just a heads up : )
TIPS:
- Check out Atlantis. Free after 6pm.
- Walk to Cabbage beach. 10 min walk. Nice walk. Grab a map from the front desk. Coconut drinks are $20 for a micky of rum and unlimited refills of mix. Chairs can be rented for $10each and an umbrealla can be rented too. Watersports are there as well. Plus, its just beautiful.
- Take the 10 bus to Cable beach. Very safe. $1.25 each way. Or, its a $20 cab ride for 2 people each way. Daquari Shack just outside the Sheraton resort. Good drinks.
- Take the water taxi $4 each way to the Straw Market.. Nice to walk around and takes you right around the cruise ships.
- Versailles and Cloisers gardens. 10 min walk. Again, look on the map at the hotel. Very beautiful.
- Rose Island. Paid $65 for boat ride, lunch, drinks, and snorkelling. Not alot of fish, but that beach is gorgeous and secluded. Dolphin swam right beside out boat returning to the resort. Love that!
I think that just about sums it up. Overall, the Bahamas is very safe (especially Paradise Island) and we had a great trip for the money. Oh - the fish at the bar restaurant is VERY good. You can negiotiate with the taxis - don't feel weird about it. I personally wouldn't have stayed here longer than the 4 days, but we spoke to people who come back twice a year, so I'd say, go check it out if you're looking for that cheap budget vacation. I'm glad we did. Met alot of nice couples as well.
Room Tip: You can pay $30/night to upgrade to the waterview with a balcony, but I don't find it necessary.
