“Yoga vacation”

The Sivananda yoga ashram provides a wonderful, in-depth immersion in classical yoga. People looking for a cheap place to stay and party will be disappointed and disruptive, but people who wish to investigate yoga or deepen their practice will be pleased with the multidimensional offerings: meditation, chanting, asana, vegetarian buffet, clean accommodations, and educational programs.

The one complaint I have, which has nothing to do with the ashram itself, is that the noise from Nassau and the party boats that ply the bay can interrupt sleep, and the smell of boat fuel from boats in the bay can occasionally be unpleasant.

Room Tip: The Om huts are inexpensive and pleasant, but noise from party boats can be quite loud. Oceanfront a...

“Relax, Rejuvenate & Reconnect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

The Sivananda Ashram in the Bahamas is fittingly located on Paradise Island, Nassau, Bahamas. Neatly nestled amongst a variety of forest, flora and fauna and cushioned on either end by the ocean, the peace and serenity of the Ashram remains undisturbed hustle and bustle of the world. It's a place where you can relax, unwind, and reconnect with You.

By definition, an ashram is a traditionally place of Hindu religious/spiritual retreat, surrender and community life and this ashram meets all those requirements with the modern benefits of a variety of simple but comfortable accommodations, healthy vegetarian food, a divine beach to yourself, and world class authentic Hatha yoga training, workshops and speakers. In addition to your option of two daily yoga classes, each morning and evening you can enjoy quieting and expanding the mind with a 30-minute group meditation practice followed by chanting and an enlightening lecture.

Should you want to spend a day exploring, the Atlantis hotel is just a 10minute beach-walk away, and the Nassau mainland a 5 minute (free) boat-ride away, so you can easily access a variety of snorkeling trips, diving, shopping, restaurants and all the Bahamas has to offer. (But don't be surprised if you find that you don't want to leave the peace of the Ashram.)

The Sivananda Ashram is unique in the purity of the tradition it has maintained, and you are sure to find your stay to be a warm, peaceful opportunity for spiritual growth.

“One Month at the Retreat :)”

Staying at the Ashram was truly a fantastic experience. The accommodations are clean, comfortable and homey. The people are the most warm and loving; they care how you are feeling and that you are enjoying the Ashram. The food was very good, especially the home-made bread.
The yoga teachings are extremely good and the teachers help you to strengthen your practice in body, mind and soul :)
Of course, the Ashram has Ocean on 2 sides and the sound of the waves, lulled me to sleep every night. The beach is one of the best in the world, soft sugary sand and beautiful blue seas.
Best Yoga spot with perks :))

Room Tip: ask for an ocean-front room :)

“A Splendid Time”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

I was coerced to going to the Retreat by my wife. I went with an open mind and had a wonderful time.

Yoga: I'd never done Yoga before but the beginner classes were very instructional and easy with no pressure. It was a great introduction to yoga. I graduated to the intermediate classes which were also very good but possibly too easy for more advanced practitioners. There were about 3 days in a row with no beginner classes on the "Beach" platform. That was very disappointing as the beach is a much more beautiful spot than the "Bay" platform which can have noise from party and tour boats and looks across at a shipping platform.

Food: The two meals per day were ok. There were several quite tasty things although overall the food is a bit bland. It could often use a dash of salt or hot sauce. They also tend not to label anything so you kind of know you're having a yellow lentil sauce but often you have no idea. You might get bored of having the same type of food every meal but then you can just walk down the beach to Atlantis! A very significant number of guests took the 10 minute walk down the beach to the Starbucks at Atlantis every day.

Room: We stayed in one of the new beach front rooms. It was fantastic. The room was clean and spacious and comfortable. The balcony overlooking the beach was simply wonderful. These rooms have bathrooms although many other rooms don't. I loved the room.

Religion: This is not just a yoga/exercise place. You are supposed to attend the 2 daily yoga classes but also the 2 daily Satsangs (6 am and 8 pm). They consist of a half hour silent meditation, a half hour of responsive chanting and an hour lecture (see below re Programs). I only attended one of the morning Satsangs but enjoyed all of them. Know that religious practice here is as important as the physical yoga. So if praying and talk of God turns you off this may not be the place.

Programs: The talks that took place while we were there were of very high quality. It wasn't prosletyizing about the faith. They were intelligent discussions about interesting topics and were an unexpected plus.

Service: Staff in advance of the trip were a bit contradictory depending who you spoke with. Many of the staff are volunteers working in exchange for accommodation so don't expect much professionalism. They just want to put in their hours.

Setting: The ashram is very pleasant and the facilities are fine. The beach is unbelievably beautiful and spectacular.

I would certainly visit again.
