I absolutely love wine and that reason alone is why I visited the Graycliff for dinner last Saturday night. I arrived to Nassau via a cruise ship. With only one day to see the sights I made sure that the Graycliff was on my short to do list. My evening started with a champagne cocktail in the Graycliff lounge. The energy was vibrant and classy as the pianist/songstress belted tunes from the Rat pack era. The people who strolled in were upscale tourist types and local politicians and lawyers. This is definitely NOT your average tourist spot, which is another reason I love it. It is a mecca of culture fussed together by wine and food. Definitely a place to see and be seen so dress accordingly! The wine list is massive and being the wine lover I am it was like reading a best seller on the NY Times list. What I appreciated the most was it's wide range, it included some of the best Bordeaux's from Medoc and Graves but also wines from smaller boutique vineyards like Vision Cellars (Sonoma, California). I ended up with a bottled suggested by the owner himself. A 2006 Barrandica from Medoza. Great Bordeaux style wine fun, fruity, smooth and just in my price range. It paired well with the warm duck and shrimp salad I ordered. The food was amazing. After dinner the Sommelier Alex gave me a personal tour of the wine cellar. I was overly excited as I stepped down into the basement that housed over 275,000 bottles of wine. The highlight was being able to hold the 1727 Rudesheimer Apostlewein, the oldest Riesling the world valued at over $200,000. I cradled it like a baby.
I did not want to leave! Alex was patient and attentive as I moved from section to section with questions. My only disappointment was that there is no wine tasting luncheons/dinners on the weekend. There is a table that seats about 12 set up for that in the cellar.
Food was delicious
Wine options were massive
Service was attentive/helpful (a little slow in Bahamian fashion, gives you time to enjoy the overall experience)
Ambiance- Classy, cultured and still very down to earth
