My first impression was a dated hotel which has essentially remained unchanged since the 1970s. Once I realized the "stands still in time" allure is what brings the faithfuls back time and time again I began to fall under the spell of this understated paradise. The expanse of the property is part of the reason it never seems crowded. The limited number of rooms further creates a defined supply which is another factor in crowd control. The demographic appeared well heeled but not snobbish and ranged from middle age to senior citizens, very few children were on the resort. Children were restricted from "adult" beaches which created a quiet, tranquility in a paradise like atmosphere. The resort staff were friendly, courteous and attentive to customers needs. The beaches were spectacular and the snorkeling was the best in the Caribbean. The food was adequate, we enjoyed the breakfast buffet and the Sugar Mill restaurant where the view upstaged the food. The Steakhouse was overpriced and underwhelming. All in all, Caneel Bay is a hidden jewel in the peace and quiet of a National State Park, one I would revisit without reservation.
