“Star View – Star Villas – No Stars!”

I wish I had seen the review from trv08 on Feb 12 2008 before I booked - as it was spot on.

Regrets.

- I can certainly validate all the reviewer’s comments and I guess everyone’s expectations ‘are’ different as nothing has changed since - and the owners’ vitriolic, defensive, non-apologetic response is indicative of the lack of insight and low standards; as evidenced by the condition of the place. See photos for those unconvinced.
(No-one is going to spend their vacation complaining to owner that it’s a dump and needs gutting. No idea where all the "regular maintenance" was done. We certainly didn’t see any! “Some people are impossible to satisfy” certainly, but most folk expect it to be clean, adequately equipped and not falling apart.)

- We certainly weren’t expecting a used wet towel in the middle of the floor and discarded old food items in the fridgegreeting us on arrival. (Never a good sign.) We weren’t expecting everything to be so old, warn, broken and grubby, an old rusting grill that never got hot when we could actually get it lit, absence of drinking glasses, pans warn through the Teflon, rusted broken fridge we held on with tape, mold & stains on the curtains, no DVD/VCR, two old box TVs with grubby remotes (go downstairs to satellite box to control upstairs TV!), a rusting microwave - and absence of Wi-Fi signal despite the advert, etc etc etc

For the price paid for such a small place, this was really as sad and faded as the old prints on the walls. The owners may wish to plow some of their profit back in to a top-to-bottom refurb – not just a coat of paint on the walls. The potential is there is for a great little place a short walk from town center. Location is good. Condition isn’t.

When got talking to locals and they asked where we were staying their response was always the same – “Oh, too bad” or similar, was a comment heard several times as reported to them by prior renters.
The Villas appear to have a sad reputation in town whether the owners realize it not.
Star View NOT recommended unless you have the same low standards of the owners. This was by far the worst value for money of any my winter condo rentals in the Caribbean of the last ten years. (Stayed in a condo at Sapphire Beach St Thomas same day. Clean, fully equipped, modern and... same price... right on the beach. No comparison.)

“Choose Star Villas!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2011

We chose Star Villas for a friend's wedding on St. John. We stayed at the Star of the Sea, a 1 BR, 1 Bath. Price is VERY reasonable, especially considering the very pricey accommodations available on St. Johns. The location is perfect, about a 5-10 minute walk to downtown Cruz Bay. The cottage itself is charming and unique. It was clean and tasteful. The kitchen is stocked with all of the essentials. There is a window AC unit in the BR only, but there are plenty of windows and we would get a nice breeze at nighttime. The solo complaint we had was a wild rooster that lived nearby and made very persistent am wake up calls around 5 am every day.
Bob and Marlene, the owners were WONDERFUL to us. Bob picked us up at the ferry dock, took us to the grocery store and delivered our luggage to the ferry the day of our departure. We had originally planned for a 7 day stay, but we had a death our family, so we changed our dates and shortened our stay to 5 nights. Bob and Marlene were compassionate, understanding and flexible, not charging us for the 2 nights we missed, even on such short notice. I believe there wasn't anything they wouldn't do to make our stay the best possible.
We would certainly return to Star Villas whenever we are lucky enough to be in St. John.
Thank you Bob and Marlene!

“Overall, decent place.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2011

My husband and I stayed in "The Nest." This place does not look like any of the other pictures on this site (and is not listed on starvillas.com) so it matters which of the villas you are reading the review for. The Nest villa was nice and clean and had been recently renovated. So recently I guess, I noticed bathroom tiles in the dirt in the yard. You can see the water but it is not too close and is a bit obstructed by trees - the owner cut some branches on the last day of our stay but that didn't help much. The yard was the dumping ground for branches and yard waste which was pretty unpleasant to look at during the day time. The villa decor was pleasant. There were 4 rooms: the main kitchen/dining/living area, bedroom, tiny bathroom, and large closet - there is a deck overlooking a yard. The screen door didn't work properly and had a hole that been fixed with hot glue. The mattress needs replacing - my husband complained about the springs hurting him and the lack of headboard. Everything else was nice (kitchen appliances, dishes, tv, shower, etc.) and in working order. Frank Bay is right down the hill and Cruz Bay shopping and beach are within reasonable walking distance. We arrived and paid one hundred seventy five dollars per night (cash discount) and did not see the owners after that, which was 100% fine. We were not told that there was a pool but we didn't ask. I got totally eaten by no-seeums but that is St. John - bring your bug spray! We would recommend Star Villas but not the Nest specifically unless your just looking for a cheap place to crash.

“Paradise Found”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2010

When you've done your homework, and you know what St. John is all about, THIS is the place to stay. If you're looking for a resort or all-inclusive experience, keep searching. Star Villa was everything and more my sister and I needed to celebrate my 'milestone' birthday. The villa has 2 airconditioned bedrooms, 2 full baths, a full kitchen, and more dining and lounging areas than we were able to use in a week! It is conveniently located within walking distance of Cruz Bay, yet on the quiet side of the hill up from Frank Bay. Marlene and Bob are very attentive owners and it is easy to tell they love and respect St. John. They are available for as much or as little as you need them, and we'd always come back from a day at the beach to find a freshly cleaned pool. On the day that Villa-Gravity sets in, you can follow the sun (or shade!) around the pool and expansive deck that wraps around the villa as there are lounge chairs and table areas throughout. We will definitely be back!

“Great Location!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2010

As mentioned in other reviews, Bob and Marlene are great hosts. We had flight delays and they picked us up late at night from the St. John's Ferry, which we both really appreciated. We stayed in the Star Villas, which was a one bedroom, one bath condo-like villa. My recommendation to anyone who stays in the Carribbean, please bring bug spray. We were still eaten alive by bugs, which unfortuneatly is part of being in the Carribean. We would also advise people to rent a car (if you can afford it) to travel around the island. Cabs are very expensive especially if used as the only means to get around the island. Trunk Bay, which is St. John's most famous beach, is not within walking distance from Cruz Bay. If we go back, we would probably rent a car on the island, instead of ferrying it over from St. Thomas. We had issues with Budget rent a car (which I will talk about in another review).
The Star Villa is within walking distance from Cruz Bay restaurants and nightlife. Its down a hill, so people who aren't able to/or like walking might not like the location. All and all, we will definitely go back to St. John and stay at Star Villa.
