“Amazing resort, service, and food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2012

Just returned from a January trip to the Westin St. John. The grounds here are breathtaking and extremely well taken care of. The pool is beautiful and a good size. We never had a problem finding chairs there, although it is quite crowded during the day. We only went to the beach here once, as we had rented a car from Bourgainvillea Car Rental, and spent our time mostly driving around the island and exploring the numerous beaches. Other travelers are indeed right to say the beach at the Westin is lovely if you can not rent a car, but please do try to visit the other beautiful, much larger beaches! At the Westin there is a large series of trampolines in the water at thebay. This seemed like a popular hang out for the young adult crowd.
The food at the Waterfront Bistro was excellent, visited three times. Really enjoyed the jumbalaya served in a half pineapple, and my friend loved the steak. The shrimp appetizer was not worth it. The mango tango drinks are excellent and addicting, and the pina coladas are the best on the island! Cruz Bay Prime (their nicest restaurant on the property) was amazing, as was the view. A bit pricey, but worth the visit at least once.
The service was great, with normal bumps here and there. However, whenever they did have a mishap, they were greatly accommodating and generous. I have to say, one of the ladies in the spa reception (grey hair and glasses) was extremely gracious and well trained.
One night we were there, one man was screaming and stomping out in the hallway about how much he hated the room and the hotel. I was scared, but security was trying to calm him down, and other neighbors went out and yelled at him to shut up because it was practically midnight. So if there's a nasty review somewhere in this forum, it's probably that guy.
Overall our trip was unforgettable, and we would love to return again. My room was amazing, pool view, but you could see the ocean as well (room 1203). It was not loud in our room, although it is the farthest unit (12) from the pool for a pool view. It was clean, and equipped with modern amenities. I didn't find anything wrong with it, as other travelers had written. Bed was very comfortable. Free wi-fi was great.
Only warning about St, John in general is that the "no-see-em's" are unforgiving. I left looking like I had chickenpox. Do bring bug repellent!

Room Tip: for pool view, choose one of the back units farther away from the ocean if you want it more quiet. R...

“Overall a lovely place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

We stayed 5 nights in January 2012 at the Westin. We were on the first floor of building 10 which is beachfront. The room is just a hotel room but the location is beautiful and easy access to the pool, dining, bar etc. The king bed and linens were new and the room was very clean. I would say that the bathrooms could use an update but they were clean and adequate. The resort grounds were lovely but the location of our room was definitely the best - I'm not sure I would stay if I didn't have the beachfront room. Overall, I would recommend staying here.

Room Tip: Building 10 is a great location

“January 2012 Week Vacation to St. John's: 2 Star Rooms and 4 Star Resort”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

I have to say that the resort is extremely nice. But the service is very average and the rooms except for the beachfront rooms are extremely outdated and old looking. And I am saying atleast 25 years old looking. We first checked in and were given a room that was not cleaned when they said our room was ready to be moved into. During this time we were sitting there waiting for our new room and shaking our head at how dirty, outdated, and nasty our room was. I commented to my wife that I wouldn't walk on the ugly dark blue carpet without shoes if you paid me. We were in shock that a resort like the Westin could look like this. We then moved to our second room and it was aweful as well. When I say aweful, I told the manager that this room I compared to a Days Inn in rural America. There were stains on both of the seats in the room, the bed spread had 3-4 stains, the carpet was an old blue carpet that looked so run down, and the curtains were an early 1980's green and blue. I called management and they took me to another building where they had a few open rooms. They were all the same. I shook my head in disgust to the manager. How can you charge $500 per night for these rooms. Honestly, I would give the rooms only a 2 star and wouldn't pay $100 per night. How can you charge this amount to people flying in from all over the world for these prices???? After an extremely long time of haggling, they finally upgraded me at no extra charge to an ocean front room. These were totally different and completely upgraded. Building 11-16 are all of the pool side rooms and are all old and would give these 2 stars. Building 10 is the ocean front room that we stayed in and would give a 4 star to these. Not the nicest room I have ever stayed in, but a huge step up that I thought I had moved 3 decades into the future. Even the upgraded rooms were not worth the cost. But the pool, beaches, island, and food were really nice. So those made up for the absolutely worthless rooms! Solid resort, with aweful rooms unless you get ocean front. Great food off the resort property.

Room Tip: Ocean Front Room in Building 10. Do not stay in building 11-16!

Thank you for sharing your feedback with us, both the positive and the challenges. While I was delighted to read that there were many aspects of your stay that you enjoyed during your time with us, such as the beach, pool and food, I am truly sorry that the condition of your room distracted from your otherwise enjoyable stay. Your initial room certainly did not meet our Westin standards and I sincerely apologize for it not meeting your expectations as it should have. We are currently in the process of exploring options for future updates for our rooms and truly appreciate you sharing your experience so that we are able to take note of necessary renovations. We thank you for choosing The Westin St. John and again for your valuable feedback. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future so that you are able to see our improvements first hand and so that we are able to exceed your expectations.

“Don't go for the beach but for the location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

We are here on vacation and can tell you that resort itself is very pretty. The pool is big and there is a bar (not swim up) to get lunch and drinks. There is a volleyball net and there are activities planned though out the day for guests. The grounds are very pretty.

The negatives are that many of the rooms do not have water views and the walls are very thin. Thus, it was annoying to hear my next door guests curse and speak loudly every night. the beach at the resort is not very pretty. It's reallly a marina and thus not a perfect caribbean beach. It's actually a man made beach. Also, at night the movie played outdoors for kids is extremely loud. So from 7-9 you may have to hear an entire Disney movie whether you want to or not.

Yet, the hotel's location is great and it's very easy to get on a taxi and spend the day at the many pretty beaches nearby. (that's what we did). The ride into town to dine is also very easy and quick. There are great restaurants in town.

I would say this is a great resort for families but not a very romantic one for couples.

Room Tip: Building 16 has the rooms with water views and the ones onthe hill. do not choose rooms around the...

“Overpriced for not much of anything.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 January 2012

Let's start with what you need to know:
This property doesn't give any perks for being a Starwood SPG gold or platinum member. You get zip. They don't upgrade. All you get are your points.
The property is pretty. And big.
At night it isn't well lit, so you risk falling off curbs or stairs -- this is especially bad near the spa & the on-site deli (which you want to use b/c it is way cheaper than room service).
If you pay what they advertise - in the $400 - $450/range, you get zip, zilch, nada but a room. It isn't worth it.
Great breakfasts on the 'beach' facing west, so sun isn't in your eyes & it is calming and pretty.
The folks at Cruz Bay Sports are amazing.
The spa isn't a spa. It is a glorified gym with a small locker room with a small room that offers manis and pedis, and the woman who gives them complains about how long her day is.
There are a couple of treatment rooms for massages & facials, and while the staff is nice, this isn't a spa. No place to relax, spend time, wind down, bask in a post-massage zen.
The $120/RT ferry to/from the airport is great b/c you don't have to worry about anything - except finding out what is going on when you arrive b/c they check you in at the airport, so you don't get any contact with the front desk, concierge, etc.
The beach isn't anything special.
The service is inconsistent.
I'm told the villas are good & better booked outside of Starwood, but I can't vouch for that.
My room was nice. Not great, but nice. I was in the 21 building, which isn't near the pool. I've been told that the rooms near the pool are quite loud.
There aren't enough staff to serve the people at the pool and those at the beach, so you have to get up and go to get your bill or another drink or food.
I still honestly don't know what I was supposed to get for my $40/day resort charge. Nobody ever told me, and there was no literature.
There are no phones anywhere near the rooms, so if you have a problem you have to flag down someone to call a security guard. No house phones = no trouble shooting.
Housekeeping is terrible! Sometimes I had turn-down, end-of-day service (you expect this at a resort because you shower after a day on the water or at the beach), sometimes I didn't. When I checked in there was a towel chucked into the closet (the guy who escorted me to my room apologized and made a crack about housekeeping). One night when I called for extra towels I got them with a long explanation about how overworked she was.
The front desk staff is completely incompetent. They had the wrong check-out date, so I wanted to make sure my key cards were OK. The woman said yes. Then I checked on something else, and she asked me for the cards back because she redid them for the wrong room. So, I asked to make sure they would work throughout my stay because the next day I would be out on a boat all day & not back until late. She assured me it was all sorted. You can guess what happened: I came back that evening & my key cards didn't work. So, I had to schlep up to the front desk to get them redone.
I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, but the only other 'resort' option on St. John is Caneel Bay, which is twice the price. That is probably why the people at this property figure they can get away with the substandard service & high prices.
The staff at the Mango Deli on site were great. The receptionists at the gym/spa were lovely. One concierge (they call it Westin vacations or something) was awesome - she totally hooked me up with a great cab driver (William Wade) to give me a tour of the island.
Lots of iguanas & other wildlife around that kids would like.

Room Tip: Don't know what it takes, but if you don't like walking, don't stay in a Villa. 1st floo...
