My wife & I chose to stay at Gecko House for our honeymoon in Oct 2009; it was an excellent choice for us. (I meant to write this review sooner.) If you want time alone away from the crowds, with a beautiful view of a secluded St John bay, and good access to the amenities of the island, this will be a great choice. When we arrived the owner had cheese and wine waiting for us, which was great as we had been traveling all day. The kitchenette allowed us to prepare some meals ourselves, but we also had easy access (a short drive) to restaurants in town when we wanted to eat out. We enjoyed the hot tub & kayak that were available. The room was not large, but was sufficient for our needs, as we were out touring the island during most of the day. Watching the moon rise over the hills across the bay while soaking in the hot tub by ourselves was wonderful. We also had access by kayak to a whole beach to ourselves.

Both rooms with their own bathrooms are separated by a deck, giving private time to each couple. One room has the kitchen and a view of the Caribbean waters below from a nice sized enclosed deck. The other room, on a lower enclosed deck, has a mini refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and is surrounded by the natural, delightful sights and sounds of a garden. My husband and I stayed here with my brother and sister in law in May. The owner and her house sitter made us feel at home without being intrusive. We felt like we had friends to call on when we needed advice or anything at all. Everything you need is handy. We loved the screened in decks in the morning before setting out for a day of exploration of this lovely island. 4WD rental is a must. Private beaches are minutes away with great snorkeling. Great art and ambiance are in each of the rooms. Andrea (owner) has thought of everything. We really loved the Gecko House with its uniquely tiled walkways. This is a great place for people who like an interesting experience from their vacation, instead of the boring one you get at most accommodations. Perfect place for hikers, nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. We will return someday, but not soon enough!

: We stayed at the Gecko House when we were in St. John in the Spring of 2009. The location is a little out of the way. You need to rent a car to go around the island and go into town. The room is a bit small with a little dining table. There is also an arm chair by the window. The bathroom was clean, but they don't clean the bathroom nor the bedroom until after you leave, so don't expect fresh towels and bedding during your stay. The shower has good water pressure, but it may run out of hot water if you take a shower that's longer than 5 minutes. There's a hot tub that you can use. It's nice to enjoy the hot tub in the evening watching the stars. The apartment has a great view of the Fish Bay area. The balcony is decent size and a great place to enjoy the sunset with a drink. It has an efficiency kitchen and a refrigerator in the apartment and an outdoor grill you can use. If you plan on staying in making your own meals some of the nights, it's a perfect retreat away from the busier downtown area. The drive to go downtown takes about 15mins, but the roads are windy and steep in places. It has small rocky beach for snorkelling and swimming near by (15 mins walking). If you want a classic Caribbean white sand beach experience, you will have to go to other beaches around the island. Overall, it's a peaceful stay if you are not looking for a lot of night life.

We enjoyed our stay at Gecko House. The view was beautiful and our host was very helpful. My kids loved having their own "separate apartment" -- so did I for that matter. The location was convenient to Cruz Bay and beaches. We loved the July 4th Festival and hope we can return for another visit.
