“Nice for a short break, hotel staff really helpful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

We stayed here for a weekend recently, the hotel set in a lovely position. Unfortunately, there were no superior or spa break rooms left when we booked, so we had one of the standard rooms, which was nice enough for a weekend break, but don't supply gowns on slippers for the spa, and are a little colder than in the main hotel, however everything in the room worked ok, shower was fine, and bed was comfortable.

The staff in the resaurant, and at breakfast were really pleasant and helpful, and the breakfast was really, really good, with full 'Welsh' breakfast of local produce, as well as fruit, toast, cereal, and other goodies.

The pool, gym and sauna were good also.

All in all a nice break, but I think staying for the spa breaks, and in the superior rooms makes it even nicer, but not sure whether woudl be prepared to pay the extra or not.

“A bit pricey for a 3star!”

My husband booked a night at this hotel as a Christmas present, as we have passed it many times and i thought it looked quite quaint. Its best feature is the swimming pool and spa. Very nice indeed, clean and spacious. We had a superior river view room which to be honest was not much better than a travelodge or a premier inn room. The view was of the car park and trees not exactly superior. It was a bit shabby to be honest and in need of an update. The hotel is in a good location for the beacons and great if you like walking which we do. The breakfast was very nice but an additional charge for a cooked breakfast seems a bit steep to me. The restaurant was quite packed and not very roomy which was a bit off putting hence we did not choose to eat here in the evening. We did have an enjoyable stay but this hotel is nothing special its best qualities are the spa and its location, we probably wouldnt make a return visit.

Thank you for your review and I am sorry you chose not to dine with us as this might have completed your overall picture of the hotel.

Nant Ddu is an extremely popular dining "haunt" for "locals" and has been for years. This popularity has not waned in these difficult times as we offer really good value for money. Even being in the middle of the National park we are packed for dinner and most lunchtimes every day of the year.

Regarding breakfast we include in our price a wide range of cold items from the buffet with juices etc and hot waffles with syrup and a big range of breads, pastries etc teas coffees etc, etc, etc. The supplement we charge for a cooked breakfast is about the same you pay at MacDonalds and less than at a Little Chef, so we reckon it is pretty good value for money.

our bedrooms to be honest do get a hammering as we are so popular and we really find it difficult to get into them to give them a bit of TLC. Rest assured we have a rolling programme and are addressing this on an ongoing business.

Hope we see you again, and do try the restaurant....you have no idea what you are missing!!

Kindest regards

David

“Friendly and comfortable hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

Just returned from over night stay at the Nant Ddu. The room was large and clean but not much thought given to its furnishing. Large glass table, more like a dining table, served as a dressing table with a mirror above that was hung too high on the wall so that I had to stand to dry my hair. The bed had an enormous bedstead that blocked the view of the TV and the wardrobe was a complete waste of space as it contained drawers and shelves that meant there was only enough depth to hang up a rugby shirt. Even a jacket and my shortish dress were too long and in any case there were only 3 of those dreadful unremovable hangars!
That said, the lights were brilliant, in more ways than one - none of those dreary eco bulbs that you get in hotels nowadays, the bed was comfortable (although I took my own pillow as usual and I would recommend you do the same) and it was so quiet during the night even though the hotel was quite busy. Bottled water and tea/coffee is available in the room and you can borrow DVDs should you wish to. The heating is very efficient and the radiators are controlled by attached thermostats.
The spa and pool areas are also very clean, including changing rooms. The pool is a good length for a smallish hotel and there is a good sauna, steam room and an OK jacuzzi. Seating around the pool is quite restricted. Although we didn't have any treatments, the smell of the oils etc from the treatment rooms was delicious. There is also a small gym which looked reasonably well equipped and over looks the pool. The pool area has a high, sloped ceiling unlike some hotel pools which can feel claustrophobic. Towels, slippers and waffle weave dressing gowns are provided. I much prefer these to heavy toweling ones.
Dinner in the restaurant was lovely with friendly and efficient staff. Mary, the maitre d', is great! The menu has not been updated for a long time but the food is good if a little heavy with sauces. Perhaps a few lighter starters could be included as the main meals tend to be quite rich. I had a side salad for my starter and that was fine ( have the lamb with sweet potato as a main - it is my all time favourite). The meal for 2 (starters and mains) with a glass of wine and a lager for my husband and soft drinks for me followed by some very good coffee and chocolates came to around £45.
Would definately recommend Nant Ddu, particularly as a base for exploring the Brecon Beacons. Friendly atmoshere and comfortable.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel as the A470 runs at the front, although it isn't too clo...

“Lunchtime Treat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

Stopped off for lunch at the Nant Ddu Lodge en route to Mid Wales. Have stopped off there before to eat and stayed overnight and never been disappointed, but it has been a while since visiting.
What a super menu, a veritable culinary nirvana. If like me you are watching your weight after Xmas the starters as a main are a delight. I cannot wait to visit again for evening dining so that we can do justice to the menu.
If you have visited before do go again soon and, if you have not tried this restaurant, then I do feel sorry for you! You could perhaps have a stop over and make the most of the wines on offer?

So pleased you were able to fit us in on your travels and that you enjoyed lunch.

We are always delighted to welcome guests at lunchtime and if they would like to have a look around the hotel and the leisure club and spa then we are pleased to do a showround after lunch.

Due to popular demand we have started hosting small weddings in a private area and I think you will agree it is a great place for any special event, as well as just popping in for lunch or dinner.

Thanks for posting your review and we look forward to welcoming you back.

Kindest regards

David
