“Wont be going back”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2011

This hotel is not what it shows on the leaflets
I stayed there with my husband last wednesday 7th sept.2011 it is very tired and needs a complete refit.
We stayed in one of the chalets out back because if you have a pet (our small yorkie benji) You cannot stay in the main house.
Thats ok in fact it is very good because when you go for walkies at 7 in the morning there are no stairs and you dont disturb anyone
Unfortunately the mould on the ceilings due to damp and the mould around the tiles in the bathroom, and the cobwebs on the celing and pelmet are very off putting, not to mention the dust kicked up when i retrieved my dogs ball from under the bed, along with a hair fancy grip, a bottle top and other undiscribable items.
we had to call the girl in reception to get the tele on, it was so complicated and then when she managed to switch it onto a chanel, she admitted she didnt know how she had done it, (she just kept pushing all the buttons) !!!!!
So we left it on while we went out for dinner (not at the hotel)
the main reception in the hallway was not being used and the desk in the dinning room was being used as reception.
I pointed out the cobweb hanging from the ceiling with dead spiders in it, so it MAY have been moved by now, (but i wouldnt hold my breath.
The breakfast was clean although my fried egg was well over cooked with crispy bits all around the edge and hard yolk.
No imagination for breakfast, orange juice Very week concentrate too watered down
cerial, and cooked one sausage, one egg, one bacon, one black pudding and toast
that was it, there was fresh fruit but i could see the dust on it.
It has the potential to be a nice hotel (maybe it once was) but now it is tired and un cared for and probably unloved (shame).......

“Warm and welcome”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2011

Stayed at this hotel from the 2nd september to the 4th september travelled for business purposes. Check quick, adequate room on the car park back of the hotel.
Room was quire large though old fasionhed but in a quaint way.
Breakfast okish, cooked breakfast was slightly disappointing, staff very friendly, around a 10 minute drive to the breacon beacon.
A very diffirent experience from the usually hotels we stay in, for example when we asked for a late check out for 4pm was told this was no problem and no extra chearge.
Would stay again..

“Used to be nice”

This used to be a family run hotel but was taken over and, despite the staff's efforts, is now run down with a radiator in my room that couldn't be turned off, a disabled extractor and a no smoking room that is just above where someone smokes and next to the laoding bay so I got woken up at 5.45AM.
Also speaking to other gusts there is mould in some of the chalets.
The only good point is the resteraunt.

“Needs Updating- but otherwise EXCELLENT”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 May 2011

We stayed in Room 17 - a chalet room adjacent to the well-lit and secure car park at the back of the hotel. OK- it needs major investment- and I understand the Tregenna is currently up for sale.BUT- it is well-situated in the very centre of Merthyr- It is in a QUIET location (Travel Lodge and Premier Inn are both noisy holes - being situated right next to busy dual carriageways) - It has a friendly well stocked bar area where you can have a dink and a chat - (unlike the souless Travel Lodge which doesn't have a Reastaurant either!)- the food is 100 % better than the mass-produced stuff available at Premier Inn- the staff are FRIENDLY and HELPFUL. Such a lot going for the place- give it a try.Excellent value for money- would definitely stay again.

“Didnt meet expectations”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2010

We had the Honeymoon suite, which was reportedly the best room in the Hotel. I am relieved to say we weren’t on honeymoon, or it would have been a very poor start. The bed was very creaky and you could see underneath where the centre was held up with a section of timber.
There was a “dirty drain” smell in the bathroom which never seemed to clear, even with the window open. There was a shower, but very poor flow, not very efficient and requires replacing.

The room, as with the Hotel generally was tired, and certainly had seen better days and would benifit from renovation in my opinion.

There was a coffee/tea tray in the room with biscuits replaced each day.

The main reception desk area was quite presentable, but cluttered up and full of general items, so oddly it wasn’t used. Their operating area seemed to be a table positioned between a restaurant and kitchen, but again very cluttered, and from a several aspects, not in an ideal position.

There is a main restaurant area, which in the evenings was busy, but we didn’t eat there.

Breakfast was very good, with a selection of cereals etc. and full freshly cooked full welsh.

Parking was a good sized car park at the rear, which was busy early evening with people in the restaurant, but that cleared later. There was plenty of road parking outside the Hotel.

From a location prospective, it was very good, and provided very quick access to the Brecon Beacons and other parts of Wales.

So, generally, OK for a one night stop, but reality didn’t match the web site or our expectations.
