We have been staying at Bolongo Bay almost every February since 1995. From the first time to the last, this February, we have loved the people and the ambience of this place which we consider to be a true island experience. We have traveled with friends and family over the years and one and all have loved it and hope to return.
We have had ample opportunity over the years to explore other resorts and beaches and their amenities and while big resorts like Frenchman's, where we have also stayed, are very posh, they only offer the big resort experience. Fighting for chairs on the beach or around the pool, paying two to three times as much for food, beverages and accomodations and sometimes haughty attitudes instead of friendly, welcoming service is, more often than not, part of the experience. The owners and staff at Bolongo make you feel part of their island family. Even when there is a "full house", we have never felt crowded when making use of the facilities.
The beach at Bolongo is very tropical and provides opportunities for a total beach experience. Be it laying in a chair or hammock to read, sun, catch the breeze, or snorkelling, wave riding, wind surfing etc. it's provided. The day sails and sunset cruise on the resorts' catamaran are not to be missed. The two restaurants on premises offer a variety of dining experience. You can dress for dinner or go totally casual, lunch on the beach or by the pool, and there is even a small kitchenette area in the room if you prefer to dine on your balcony. The food is very eclectic with something for everyone and always prepared and served tastefully and plentifully. The resort is older, but going every year we are always aware of the constant effort to update and restore. Our facilities have always been clean and comfortable. We usually stay for two weeks, and the daily maid service is great. It takes an effort to keep rooms on the beach free of sand! The rooms truly are "on the beach". There isn't another resort on the island that puts you so close to the waves. If you choose not to run the air-conditioning, you fall asleep at night with the soft sounds of the ocean in the background. Sitting out on the balcony overlooking this beautiful bay to see sunrises, sunsets and a starry sky is truly wonderful.
If you like some night-life, Iggies is the place to be. There is live entertainment just about nightly, but the insightful distance from the rooms, while within easy walking distance, provides an insulating barrier to noise. It is a happening place. We just heard from friends that Stevie Wonder and Dave Mason were there one evening to catch the action and ended up doing some jamming with the band. The only other beach bar in the area that gives you the true beach bar experience is probably Foxy's, and that involves a boat trip!
Bottom line is what are you looking for? We have found that Bolongo offers and provides the facilities and atmosphere that we are looking for in a tropical beach experience.
We prefer one of the two buildings in the middle of the resort.
