My husband and I had a blast celebrating the destination wedding of our friends at Sapphire Beach. Our condo was fabulous and right on the beach. We had all the makings of our own little vacation home including a full-sized fridge, stove and microwave. Our fully furnished condo came with a welcome bottle of rum (Cruzan, natch!), but that's about it. If you want to eat at home, you'll have to go get some groceries.
We had the lovely opportunity to stay in Unit 209, which was beach-side, second floor. It had a gorgeous view of the beach and was a quick walk to the big pool near the marina and to the marina itself.
Some tips to you:
-Book directly through your owner via http://vrbo.com, if you're able. This seems to be the best way to get a great deal. We booked through http://orbitz.com and paid a much higher rate than others that booked through http://vrbo.com.
-Be aware when booking that Sapphire Village are the units that are further up the hill (read: not right on the beach). They ARE cheaper, however, and the walk to the beach is just down the hill. I believe they will also shuttle you up the hill if you like.
-Red Hook is a quick cab ride away (about a mile). The walk is slightly treacherous and partly without a path, so I'd recommend cabbing it or driving. There is a rather pricey grocery store in Red Hook, but as you'll find, most things are expensive on the island.
-There is a Budget Rental on the property if you want to book a vehicle for the day.
-Check-in is in Building A.
-Drink rum. It's way cheaper than beer.
-Book a tour with New Horizons. Pricey, but a really great time, and the marina is so close to the property.
The only downside? The staff isn't the friendliest. The reception was rather cold and the cleaning folks only came twice. Since our room didn't come equipped with beach towels (it seems most were), this was a problem when we had to take our bath towels down to the beach. We made it work. Drip dry anyone?
All in all, I'd definitely come back, armed with my new found knowledge and lots of cash. St. Thomas is very expensive, but when you're in paradise, it's hard to say no.
Have fun! You'll be on island time in no time!
