“Sugar Bay Resort and best kept secret Caribe Marketplace”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

The pools at Sugar Bay Resort were beautiful and well maintained. The beach area was also beautiful and clean. The view from our room was breathtaking and well worth the price. Our room on the 3rd floor was fine with a full bathroom and another sink and vanity outside the bathroom. We didn't take the all inclusive plan and the food in the main dining room Manor House was extremely expensive. The menu in the Ocean Club/Gaming Center was limited, but everything we had was good. We didn't discover until the last day that the coffee shop/deli Caribe Marketplace made breakfast and provided the room service for the resort. We did however find Mark and his staff at the coffee shop to be very helpful and friendly. We had a little problem with the room key-card several times and had to walk back to the lobby to get a new card. It took about a 1/2 hour for a maintenance member to unlock our door one day while we waited to get into our room, but we were on vacation and didn't have to be anywhere else anyway. All in all it was a very good experience for a first time visit.

“Fabulous Panoramic Views”

I just returned from a wonderful stay at the Sugar Bay Resort in St. Thomas. My sister and I chose it because we want a carefree all inclusive vacation. We truly enjoyed our stay here. The grounds and views were fabulous. We booked the bay view room, but we were able to get an upgrade to a oceanview room. The views were breathtaking!!! We were very pleased with our accomodations. The hotel had low occupancy during the time that we were there so we got to interact with many of the hotel staff members. Everyone that worked around the pool area was nice and attentive. The bartenders were great. They made very good drinks...not watered down and had good conversation. One of the pool attendants-Lenard was very engaging. He even sang for us. I enjoyed all of the food that I ate. There was a nice variety on the menu. Watch out for the tropical birds when eating on the veranda at the pool area. They are aggressive. The staff inside the main building were hit or miss in the customer service department. The front desk attendant checking us in was good. Maurice the bellboy was excellent...very helpful and pleasant. The bartenders at the casino were slow and not very pleasant. The Caribe Marketplace in the main building had lots of goodies...great coffees, teas, desserts, and sandwiches. Mark the owner of the Caribe Marketplace was absolutely wonderful! You have to stop to have some homemade icecream...delicious! We totally enjoyed our stay here and plan to return. We met lots of really nice people. The hotel is close to the location to catch a ferry to St. John's which we did do and enjoyed. Also, Sugar Bay is close to some great nightlife in Red Hook.

Room Tip: Ask for an upgrade...you just might get one.

Dear Tom C

Thank you so much for staying with us at Sugar Bay Resort and Spa and for your review of our hotel.

We are sorry that the weather was on the cool side when you visited, we can understand that the uncooperative weather can set the tone for one’s vacation and we are indeed sorry that you did not enjoy your stay.

The food at Sugar Bay has always earned us favorable comments and only a week ago we were awarded by the Daily News “The Best Banquet Hotel” in the United States Virgin Islands. We are aware that the very notion of food is a subjective one; what is considered good food by one person is sometimes not considered so by another.

We are always disheartened when any of our guests leave our resort dissatisfied and we are at your disposal to see how we best we can work with you to achieve an amicable solution.

Yours sincerely

First time to the St. Thomas. Hotel recommended by a colleague who stayed here years ago. Not what I expected from a resort. Poor quality "hotel food" and outdated rooms. Don't let the Wyndham name fool you. Beautiful pool and a good value, but don't do the all inclusive.

Dear Outlier3

Thank you so much for staying at our resort recently and your review of our hotel.

Sugar Bay Resort does not operate as a Wyndham Hotel. Wyndham ceased its operation here in July 2011.

We are sorry that you did not like the food and that you felt the rooms were outdated. We are heartened by the fact that you felt that the pool was beautiful and overall it was a good value.

We certainly do hope that when your travels next take you to St Thomas you will consider staying with us again so that we can be afforded the opportunity to make amends for any shortcomings on this trip.

Yours sincerely

“SAVE YOURSELF MONEY & HASSLE: DON'T GO”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

I have traveled throughout the US, the Carribean and Europe, and have stayed at moderate and expensive hotels & resorts. Having worked as a waitress, I am a patient and fair customer and I tip generously . So, with that said, let me say that Sugar Bay is not worth whatever they are charging these days. I knew, based on the rate, that it was not going to be posh, but it definitely was not free -- yet they did not deliver value for what I paid. It was literally the worst vacation I have ever taken.

When we arrived right after Christmas, we were told upon check-in that the AC in our room was out. So I said fine, we'll go to pool and check back in a few hours... Little did we know that the AC was out in the whole resort and it had been broken for almost a week by the time we got there. They deliberately misled us and made it sound like there was a small glitch but it was a huge systemic problem with no end in sight. They should have been honest and upfront about the situation. Instead they were evasive and nasty.... I asked for fans for the room and got one small cheap fan. It was still stiflingly hot at night. The mattresses are very old; one had a broken frame. The decor is dated and worn. The bar "ran out" of kahlua and two days later had not replenished it, despite the fact that Red Hook is five minutes away.... The wait for food was interminable. We heard lie after lie about what the hold up was... spilled pasta in the kitchen??? Really? We waited 50 minutes between salad and entrees at Baci. Breakfast at the Manor House was a joke. Ran out of clean plates. Incomplete silverware set-ups. SLOW service.

Small, rocky beach. Surly guy renting snorkeling equipment. We escaped to Magen's Bay and St. John, but some folks were stuck there....Nasty attitude at front desk -- no offers to compensate for hellish AC situation. I had to ask what they would do, and even then there was no apology, just a request for an email address. The email that came was riddled with typos. All in all, I would NEVER even contemplate staying there again. And would advise that you stay ANYWHERE BUT THERE if you are going to St. Thomas.

Dear lj_020202

Thank you for staying with us over the Christmas and New Year period and for your review of our resort.

The week that you stayed, was an extremely difficult time for us as well as our many guests who experienced the failure of our air conditioning system. This impacted many of our guests in a very negative way for which we are truly sorry.

The good news is that the air conditioning system was replaced on the 4th January 2012. All of our guests were compensated for this.

Once again our apology for the problems over this period and we sincerely hope that when your travels next take you back to St Thomas you will consider staying with us again. This will certainly give us the opportunity to make amends for the shortcomings on this trip.

Yours sincerely
