“Beautiful island, Good family resort”

We just returned from a wonderful week at the Marriott Frenchman's Cove. The property was just beautiful, right on the water, the infinity pool overlooked the beach and the water. It is located along the cruise ship channel and you could watch the ships go by morning and evening, it did not matter how many times you saw one, it was always fascinating - they are just huge! Last year, we stayed on the east side of the island near Red Hook and you cannot see the cruise ships from there, so it was a new experience for us.

Every member of the resort staff was friendly, you never passed anyone who did not stop to greet you. The reception staff were nice, we were able to check in when we arrived, even though it was 2 hours before the scheduled check-in. Having said that, if the resort is 100% booked, they will not let you check out late, but they will hold your luggage for you and you can shower in the fitness center, so it is not a big deal. We stayed in a 2 bedroom villa in the St. John building, the rooms are large, the kitchen is nice although we could have used a few more dishes and pots and pans since we eat a lot in the room. The St. John building is at the back of the property, so you had 3 elevator rides to get to the pool/beach, but this was not a big deal and our children actually liked pushing the buttons! We think that the Virgin Gorda building would be the best and may try to request it when we go back, it would be one less elevator ride.
The beach was small, but nice and never crowded, at first our daughter did not like the rocks, but once she had some water shoes, she didn't even notice. There were games on the beach including a bean bag toss and a golf ball game, there was a floating trampoline-like thing in the water and also a floating iceberg that you could climb and slide down (although this is too difficult for small children, we only saw adults able to climb it). If you wanted a bigger beach, you could go to the Morningstar beach next door which you could walk to rather easily or take the shuttle. We usually walked there and shuttled back. The waves at the Morningstar Beach were bigger than the other beaches.
The pool at the Frenchman's Cove was nice, there were beach chairs sitting in the water, and nice steps around most of the pool. The highlight for our family was the water slide, our 2 and 4 year old loved the slide! There is also a baby pool which our 2 year old loved and a hot tub. The restaurant on site was good, we ate lunch and dinner there. There is happy hour 2 for 1 drinks from 4 to 6 every day which was nice, they had live music most days.
We rented a car because we like to get out and explore and because our kids are in carseats, but this resort has so much I am not sure it would be necessary. You can take taxis most places ($6/person downtown) and there is a water ferry that will take you downtown (takes 12 minutes, $14/person), it leaves every half hour from the Frenchman's Cove dock.
For grocery shopping, we had the most luck at Pueblo, went to Cost U Less, but didn't have as much luck as we had last year, too many items in bulk. We also liked the Fruit Bowl, they have a salad bar and better produce.
For restaurants, for a nice adult dinner, we highly recommend The Banana Tree Grill which is located at the Bluebeard's Castle resort (short taxi ride) and we also liked Big Papi's Bar and Grill downtown (located in Hibiscus Alley), they actually had portable mini DVD players to entertain the kids while we ate - we had pizza there and it was excellent.
For side trips, we went to Coki Beach one day which has good, easily accessible snorkeling and took the car ferry from Red Hook to St. John - we love St. John. We also did the snorkel trip on "the Cat" arranged through the resort and loved it, we swam with the sea turtles and saw beautiful fish and coral.
Overall, we had an amazing vacation, this resort is just beautiful and I am not sure that you will find anything nicer than this.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a high floor for the best views, Virgin Gorda building seems to be the best locati...

We throughly enjoyed this hotel and the excellent amenities. Staff was great and it is hard to believe that anyone could complain about anything at this hotel. We had a ball with two other couples, made even better with the on-site vendor for cruising on their sailboat and see through bottom kayak touring (a must do). They also gave very helpful hints on dining out and shopping via their water taxis. Everyone was so nice and professional. We've traveled all of the islands in the carribean but felt that the staff made the difference at this hotel.

“Wonderful Christmas Trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2012

We took bug spray, but we didn’t use it much, if any. There were a few mosquitoes in the early morning and late afternoon. Current Virgin Island problem is contacting the "Dengue Fever" giving flu-like symptoms. Comes from mosquito bites ! Avoid sitting on your balcony on calm days in early morning or evening. NO FUN. It lasts 10 days, no cure. Drink plenty of fluids, and ride it out.
Take Pop Tarts, cereal, small container of Dijonaisse, rice, pasta, spaghetti sauce and any other food that won’t spoil. There was no salt and pepper, so bring your own. We brought our own coffee and creamers/sugars too. We used the washer/dryer in the room, so consider bringing laundry detergent. I think they provided 5 packs of soap for the dishwasher.
The local magazine book had good maps and sites all described, so definitely pick one up in the airport when you arrive.
You should rent a car and see the island. Parking was easy and driving on the left became second nature almost immediately. We rented a car from Budget.
We got our groceries at Pueblo Foods in town. There is also a Cost- you Less up route 38 just north of the town center and the Gourmet Gallery is located on the water side in one of the gated marketplaces, across from Shipwreck Tavern. There is a grocery store beside the K-mart in the Tutu Mall area and a nice fruit and vegetable assortment was in the plaza at the intersection of 38 and 313. Beside that was a small bakery. Fresh loaf of bread was ~$1.
There is a free shuttle between the Cove and the other Marriott hotels (Reef and Morningstar). This was very convenient because the Reef has the best outside balcony for drinks on the island. It was nice to sit outside and watch as the island lights up as dusk turned to evening. We always walked, but some did use the shuttle.
Marriott runs a ferry across to Charlotte Amalie at the same price as a taxi, but with MUCH better views. It was a much more relaxing ride than the taxi and half the price (12 round trip per adult).
We ate at Duffy’s Love Shack several times. Thursdays are LOBSTER LUNACY. The special includes a dinner salad, vegetables, corn on the knob & rice. Quantities are limited so arrive early! Mondays are feature ALASKAN KING CRAB specials for $19.75. And Monday-Friday 3-6 PM $1.00 Hot Dogs $2 Miller Lite. Can’t beat those prices ! We also ate at ShipWreck, Pizza Amore and Fish tails. We put frozen beef tenderloin and lobster tails in a small Styrofoam package in the suitcase and had Surf & Turf in the room one night. Cheapest meal of the week ! The outdoor BBQ's were great and the view while you BBQ is awesome. We were in the new Tortola building. The kitchen is fairly well stocked.
We could see Hassel and Water Islands, Charlotte Amalie Bay and the cruise ships as they came and went. The pool is great. There are plenty of chairs around the pool and on the beach. There is no charge for chairs and umbrellas on the beach. You have to be careful walking on the sand and entering the water because of rocks just under the sand. Water shoes are a good idea.
You should check out St. John. You don’t need a car unless you want to go to some of the beaches over there. Just take the ferry at Red Hook.

Room Tip: Ask for the Tortola Building!

“Absolutely beautiful hotel and views!”

I stayed with a friend at this beautiful hotel. It is a great, pretty central location on the island as you can get to a lot of places pretty quickly. The hotel rooms are very neat and have everything you could ever need, including a fantastic view from our awesome porch. The staff are so friendly and help you set up any trips or anything you need. There is a nice infinity pool there and a little beach with hammocks.

I have traveled in May and in December and both times it was great. It is a little interesting navigating the hotel if you are on the top level. You have to take a few elevators to get down to the main area, but nothing too crazy. The hotel has a cute bar/restaurant by the pool, but it also has a free shuttle to the other 2 Marriotts next door so you can try out their restaurants as well. Great place and I would definitely recommend this to anyone!
