The restaurant, staff, and views are all very good. The problem we had was with our room. It was decorated in "70's Holiday Inn" and had not been updated. I know that it is the high season, but paying $200 a night for a dated Motel 6 style room does sting a bit. Particularly when it is marketed as an upscale "boutique hotel".
I have read a number of very good reviews on the hotel. I can only assume, but there may be some number of rooms that are very nice and some that are not so nice.

What a fantastic view! My husband and I stayed for one night at the Mafolie. Our room was clean and comfortable. I had time to swim in the pool and enjoy the lounge chairs and view from the terrace before we went to dinner - just up the stairs. The food and wine were among the best of our trip to St. Thomas (and we are verrrry picky eaters).

Caught a yellow tail snapper that Chef Emmanuell cooked to perfection in a creole style followed up by a dramatic creme brulee. This was a perfect ending to our stay, with the spectacular view that Mafolie is noted for in the background. We also had that same wonderful view from our room and the pool. Staff attentive and friendly. A distance from the beaches but a respite from the crowds of Charlotte Amalia. We will be sure to return and hope to catch another fish that Chef Emmanuele can once again cook to perfection.

If you want a hotel that is not a "cookie-cutter" chain this is for you.The raves about the view are accurate--it can't be beat and the moment you arrive you are transported to the tropics. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and the beds are great. You reach them via exterior tiled walkways lined with palm trees and twinkling lights. Some of them are small so ask for a larger room. The restaurant is lovely and is a great place to hang out in the morning over coffee, or to have a relaxed dinner with the lights of the town and harbor below. The staff is friendly and helpful. This is not a resort; you need to take the free shuttle to the beach or into town for your day's activities, but you can certainly relax by the pool if you want a quiet day. I can't wait to go back.
