My wife grew up in St Thomas, so she certainly knows her way around. The beach at the Best Western Emerald Beach Resort is one of the best on the island! It is her "preferred" place to stay in St Thomas. The price is well worth it. And it's fairly close to downtown Charlotte Amalie.
If you are staying for a week or more, I suggest you get a rental car. The "dollar-man" taxi's are convenient - but they aren't $1 any more. It's more like $10/person. So, after a few trips with one friend, you could just as well have gotten a rental car for less money. (Only 2 rides a day for 2 people for 7 days = $280, and an economy-sized rental car is about $300.)
You could go to the Best Western at Carib Beach nearby for a lot less money, but you may be disappointed. Being right next to the airport, it is noisy. It's an older hotel, and is not well-kept compared to other places. I've heard complaints about the staff by some, so check the reviews there first, before you book.
Sometimes we like to go to the Secret Harbour Beach Resort instead. It's at the east end, near Red Hook. The beach there is just as nice as Emerald Beach, but the price is a bit more expensive.
The staff at the Best Western Emerald Beach Resort are wonderful, helpful and very friendly. The upkeep of the property is great, and the rooms are very nice for the money. The immenities are great - among other things, you have a refrigerator and a microwave, and OH, what a view from your balcony (2nd and 3rd floors). It's beautiful!
We especially love the bar on the beach. If you want to drink while laying in a lounge chair on the beach, a cute waitress will bring you drinks to enjoy. Of course, its cheaper to buy your own bottle and drink on your balcony - or wherever - but a nite or two of splurging, meeting other guests and talking with the bartender wont ruin you!
