“Good vacation overall...”

My husband and I just returned from the Marriott Frenchman's Reef. Hmmm...where do I start with this? Let me first say that I am a Marriott Gold and have stayed at alot of Marriott properties, so I did have some high expectations of the good service/amenities that typically go with a Marriott. BUT.....First, I'll bullet point the good:
-beautiful location. There can't be a more beautiful location in all of the VI's and the weather is perfect, day or night.
-Room 1658. We had an amazing corner room with balcony on the sixth floor-view of Morning Star beach, ocean and harbor. Wow. It was amazing waking up every morning. Would not have changed rooms with any other. Try to request this room.
-Amazing pools. Plenty of lounge chairs, two infinity pools...perfect.
-You MUST try a smoothie in the snackshop. I had one every morning...best smoothie I have ever had....really.
-Great italian buffet in Aqua Terre. I thought it was good, my husband thought it was great.
-My husband loved the conch chowder at Aqua Terre. Had it two nights.
-We never felt the need to leave the resort. We left once to simply check out Charlotte Amalie and wished we would have stayed at the resort.
-Received exceptional service and attention from Roberta, Zane and Danielle.

Now for the bad...
-the lobby needs renovated. Bad, first impression.
-we arrived on Monday at 3:00. We were told our room was not ready ( I was prepared for this from all the negative reviews), so we went and had lunch/drinks at Sunset Grill. At 5:00, our room was finally ready.
-Towel cards. They give you towel cards, so that you can get towels for the pool. Then you get your card back when you return the towel. What a hassle. And each time you return your towels, they harass you about a timeshare.
-The pools are amazing and everyone is enjoying them, but there was never a bartender walking around to take drink orders. (They lost a potential minimum of $100 from us by not offering it). You would think a resort, such as this one, would realize the profits that could be made with a little effort from staff.
-The cost of things at the hotel is pretty high, but you are on vacation.
-The majority of people working at this hotel appear to not like it. They, for the most part, appear indifferent and unhappy to be there.
-The adult-only pool is NOT adult-only. Both times we went to this pool, there were children there, Once, two small children were eating lunch at the swim-up bar! Really...are you kidding me? This was unacceptable in my book.
-There were small children in the lounge in the evening, as well. When I discussed this with the bartender, he told me that there wasn't much they could do about it. I disagree. I realize that this is a family resort and not an adults-only resort, but shouldn't children be kept out of the adult-only pool and lounge?? If you are looking for a romantic location - look elsewhere.
-Stay out of Charlotte Amalie unless you are looking for jewelry. Too many people and too many pushy jewelry salespeople.
-We ate at Gladys Cafe in Charlotte Amalie. It was just okay. I can't believe this place is listed as a go-to in Frommer's. Don't bother.
-The day before our last day there, I requested an early check-out. They told me to speak with a manager the morning of my check-out. That morning, I knew the hotel was busy, but thought as a Gold Member they would allow it. I went to speak with the manager at the front desk, Robert. I politely asked him for a late checkout and he told me that he could not accomodate my request. I asked him if we could simply have the hour we lost at check-in and he would not even agree to that. He told me that hotel had a "contingency" plan where people checking out that day could share a room to shower, etc. No thanks. This was very disappointing as our flight was not until 5:30 pm. It made for a very long day to say the least and was not the service I typically receive from Marriott.
-Service at the hotel takes a long time. Expect that and you won't be disappointed.
-People are always at the front desk complaining. From conversations with other guests, I felt like 50% of the guests there were disappointed in the hotel.
So, would I recommend this place to friends?? Maybe, but I'd want them to read the reviews first. Would I go back?? I'm not sure, but probably not. There are many more Marriott properties that are beautiful and have better service. It is really a shame that the service isn't better, because the location and rooms are amazing. As far as my rating goes, I wish there was an option to select "good". Because it was better than average, but not on the "very good" level.

Room Tip: Room 1658. Balcony and view of ocean and morning star beach.

“An awesome hotel for a family vacation”

This hotel has amenities to suit everyone's taste - a private beach, swimming pools, tennis courts, restaurants, a convenience store in the hotel as well as a small boutique at the beach. The rooms are large and airy and the bathrooms well appointed. There is a dock where the water taxi as well as other craft pick you up either to go to Charlotte Amalie or on an adventure! We went on the swim with the turtles half day excursion which was great fun and booked through the hotel. I would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to vacation where everything you need or want to do is available at or from the hotel.

“Don't be scared away...or do?”

My wife and I recently stayed at Frenchman's Reef in the USVI. More specifically, this property is across the bay from downtown Charlotte Amalie. We decided to stay here because we could use our Marriott points award.

To say that I was cautiously optimistic would be putting it kindly. I too had read all of the negative reviews about this property. Some of them bordered on horror stories leading to ruined vacations. I can honestly say that we experienced neither, and enjoyed our stay fully.

We arrived on a Thursday afternoon and had no problem whatsoever getting a "cab" to the hotel. Cabs in St. Thomas are generally 18 passenger vans. Of course they also drive on the wrong side of the road for folks coming from the US, and that is mostly what we encountered as far as other tourists, folks from the US. We arrived after about a 20min. ride and walked straight to the reservation desk. There was one couple ahead of us in line.

While we waited, another hostess looked up our reservation and handed us a card with our info so that we could get right to the business of getting our room keys when it was our turn. In retrospect (per negative reviews), I think that most visitors' issues with this registration process is that they are trying to make it something it is not, a stateside hotel. This is an island and things run on island time. Fight against island time and you *will* ruin your vacation, and everyone around you.

Our room was on the 6th floor (the lobby is on 4th), and had a king bed. The room was clean and spacious. The balcony overlooked the pool area and beyond to the harbor. Very pretty. If you want an unimpeded view, ask for a floor or two higher, as we had some trees in parts of the view. We explored the hotel that evening and walked down to Coco Joe's for the lobster and prime rib buffet. The food was great and atmosphere of eating 60 feet from the beach nice. Some of the reviews complain about price ($60/person), but if you can find all you can eat grilled lobster while sitting on the beach drinking beer for cheaper, well...go there, cause it's a deal.

The next day we got a couple's massage in the cabanas overlooking the bay. You get to listen to the surf and feel the sea breeze the whole time. After a light lunch, we took the small ferry ($14 round trip) to Charlotte Amalie to check out town. It is okay, but unless you are after jewelry (there must be 300 jewelry stores) or souvenirs, there is not much to see. If you do go, skip the restaurants, and look for a little corner food shop along the bayfront road where a little old lady is selling conch pasties. She also has drinks in can. Best food in town.

The next day we checked out the island of St. John. Again, no problems whatsoever getting a taxi to the Red Hook ferry. We returned late in the day, showered, and the headed over to the Havanna Blue restaurant at Morning Star. Atmosphere is decidedly hip here and they were very welcoming to everyone. Bartenders are fantastic and clearly enjoy their jobs.... We had tapas and liked everything we ordered. Even with drinks, and 6 plates of food, dinner for 2 was still less than $100.

Our stay was short, but we enjoyed it greatly. Like I said, I'm sure that if you look hard enough, you'll find something to complain about, but we were happy with Frenchman's Reef.

Room Tip: If clear view is important to you, ask for 7th or 8th floor.

“Feb 2nd ~Feb 5th FABULOUS STAY at the Frenchman's Reef”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

My husband Don and I just returned from our stay at the Frenchman's Reef Resort. I won these accomodations through my work, and this real estate saleswoman and auto salesman were in desperate need of R and R

A warm greeting by Roan, valet, let us know that we had arrived in paradise. Next we met Roberta, the Lobby Ambassador. Roberta is a love! I observed her handled customer's demanding requests with ease. Patricia, the Front Office Manager, proceeded to dazzle us beyond belief. A view of the parking lot from our balcony would have been expected for a gratis trip, but Patricia came through~8th Floor Ocean front in the Ocean Reef Tower! The room was newly updated. Soothing sea glass colors, mahogany furniture, crisp white bedding, marble flooring. A breathtaking view of the infinity pool and the ocean. This was shaping up to be the therapy we craved. We met Euline, our housekeeper. Euline made sure our room was spotless each day. When I commented how much I loved the Bath and Body "orange ginger" bath gel, extras showed up within the hour!

We ate at Aqua Terra onsite that evening, and enjoyed the live music. Drinks and calamari were satisfying, and the bar area stayed busy into the evening.

We went down to breakfast at Aqua Terra, and Chavelle, the lovely hostess, seated us with our server, Janice B. Janice proceeded to wake us up with hot coffee, excellent OJ and all the buffet has to offer!
I fell in love with Julia, and her custom omlets she spoiled me with each morning. Julia, your smile is infectious! Each morning thereafter, Janice graced us with her professional service (14+years!) and her beautiful smile. Thank you Janice!

The Frenchman's Reef setting is spectacular. I loved having the infinity pool all to myself for an magical evening swim. The bar scene was lively and the mix of patrons was international. Don and I loved all the Marriott Frenchman's Reef had to offer.

A heartfelt Thank You to our new friends here at the Frenchman's Reef! I plan to return this summer and bring my sister for "girlfriend fun!" I look forward to sharing lots of laughter with ya'll!

Cheers!

Ann and Don Scott

Room Tip: We loved the Ocean Reef Tower, the 8th Floor was the top and the views were the BEST!

At first we were hesitant to book our vacation here because of the reviews that were posted last year during their renovations. However, we are so happy we did. This place is truly heaven because of the location and views. Whether you want the perfect beach location or 5 star pool location, this place is the spot. If your on a budget, there are ways to enjoy your stay here without breaking the bank. There are markets close by and a little shop that sells breakfast and sandwiches inside the hotel. The staff is AMAZING! Roberta is the ambassador for the hotel. We were instantly greeted by her warm welcome the minute we checked in. She went above and beyond to make sure we had dinner reservations at the restaurants, tips for shopping and mapping out our sight seeing. We will definitely come back for another visit because of the staff and people like Roberta who truly make a vacation a relaxing one.
