“A pleasant stay at Sapphire Beach”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2011

We just returned from an 8 day stay at Sapphire Village Condominiums, Barbados #248 in St. Thomas. We read varied reviews and can offer some current conditions after staying from the 20th to the 28th of January, 2011. Our room overlooked the marina and had great views of St. John and the BVI's in the distance. We did not really use the pools (there are 2) but they were always clean and well maintained. The walk to the beach is short and entertaining if you like iguanas!! There are charters, jet ski rentals and boat rentals all on site, as well as a car rental office if you wish to take your chances on the roads here. The positives of Sapphire Village are as follows: First, a close taxi/safari ride to Red Hook. Not the Red Hook is anything special, but you are right at the ferry dock to go to St. John or Jost Van Dyke. The ferry to St. John is only $12 round trip and St. John offers a far more laid back feel than the shopping-oriented St. Thomas. Second, the prices were pretty reasonable considering you don't need a car when you stay there. We even hitched rides to Red Hook with friendly residents of the village who happened to be going that way. Third, the views and beach are great. Do yourself a favor though and get a publication with the cruise ship schedule. That way you'll know how busy the beach and traffic will be. On a busy day, there may be 7 cruise ships in town and they bus cruisers to different beaches on the island, including Sapphire Beach. It never got too crowded, but it was always good to be in the know as to what the busy days were going to be. The waters are blue and clean and the snorkling is great. I saw giant stingrays and my girlfriend swam with sea turtles. Finally, the prices are reasonable. We were able to book 8i nights and 9 days for $1095, which for two people is pretty raffordable.

The negatives are more subjective, as everyone's unit is different. Ours could have used a solid bathroom door instead of the louvre door, which made privacy a little limited when your in a studio. Our furniture was iffy and the kitchen lacked a few creature comforts. They did supply snorkling and beach chairs, so I guess its a wash. The other issue was the on-site restaraunt was pricey and had so-so food, but had been recently painted as they continue to update the development. You can use the Banana Cabana during the day for sandwiches that are delivered to you on the beach, but that too gets pricey. On St. Thomas, booze is cheap and food is expensive, so you have to explore to find the best eats for the best prices, unless money is no object.

Overall, we would recommend Sapphire Village as a great alternative to a hotel because of its location most of all. The driving on this island is somewhat crazy and if you rent a unit up in the hills, it can be downright challenging and/or inconvenient. Sapphire Village is located off a main road, has easy access by bus/taxi and a good east side location. My recomendation is to get lots of pictures of your room and decide if it meets your needs. If your like us, you'll only be having breakfast there in the morning and sleeping at night. You'll be busy doing nothing somewhere else during the course of the day.

“An amazing vacation”

We just returned from one week at the Sapphire Village Condo's in St. Thomas...we were in the building named Tobago and all I can say is that it is truly the most beautiful and affordable destination one can hope for, so much so, we are returning in March.
The location is amazing, you have one of the most desirable beaches right in front of you in St. Thomas, you are right next to a marina offering so many wonderful excursions...we took the yaght NIGHTWIND with Capt Rick and had a wonderful day sailing and snorkeling....also took the BREAKAWAY and spent a day in Virgin Gorda at the Baths, and a most memorable afternoon at Jost Van Dyke at the Soggy Dollar Bar...this is a MUST....words cannot describe both the beauty and relaxation. You are guaranteed to meet so many wonderful people......
Another highlight was taking the ferry to St John....the ferry is literally 1/4 mile from the condo and you are in St. John in 20 minutes...and from there you will see some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, not to mention some of the finest restauraunts...we went to La Tapa, right next to Woody's and it was a 5 star with such warm ambiance...
If you plan the trip well, this can be an affordable and amazing destination. We are both convinced after traveling throughout the Carribean that St. Thomas will become our home away from home....Go and enjoy!

“Exceeding my expectations!”

I recently vacationed at 241 Barbados, Sapphire Village in Saint Thomas. First impressions are that the condo complex is very clean in appearance, very nicely manicured, and wonderfully landscaped. The condo itself was more than a pleasant surprise as it was exceptionally clean, and well maintained a clear indication as to how well the condo is managed. The condo was very spacious and afforded views of the Caribbean from every room, well except the bathroom. The bedroom was awesome, spacious, well appointed and the bedding was luxurious and so comfortable! I slept so well there. The soothing trade winds and sounds of the palms frowns and Ocean put me right to sleep. I enjoyed having a TV in the bedroom to watch the news before going to sleep. The view from the tiled terrace could be a scene from any Mediterranean villa or, in my opinion, from paradise itself, the US Virgin Island of Saint Thomas!

The terrace overlooks the Caribbean, St John Bay, and Pillsbury Sound. You can see St John, Thatch Cay Tobago, Tortola, Jost Van Dyke, and Grass Cay of the British Virgin Islands. I decided to have dinner on the terrace and enjoy some good wine. The kitchen is very accommodating to cooking a nice dinner and all the cookware required to make and eat dinner is provided. I would recommend spraying some Mosquito Spray at night when you’re outside. The Mosquito on tropical Islands are small and you don’t even see or feel them until later. Noteworthy: while there I took notice of a couple of key things; first – this condo is much larger than others I “peeked” into while walking. I don’t know if all of the others are similar or not but this one is very spacious. Second – it’s worth mentioning twice – it is very clean and it showed! Third – there were no stairs to climb when entering from the parking area. The location was excellent, Sapphire Beach is right there and I went jogging every day around the Marina, beach and community. I even saw wild parrots. The resort has two pools, the one is like having your own private pool and it’s only a few yards from the door of the condo. There is also an outside shower. The small quaint town of Red Hook is so close and we went there one evening and took the walk on Ferry and went over to St John and had dinner at Morgan Mango. St Thomas gives you a feeling that its relatively safe, not like other Islands I have visited. Its small things like this that adds up to an overall wonderful experience.

The daily excursions to nearby beaches were a real treat. Every beach offers its own uniqueness and ocean life. Snorkeling in the calm waters off of Sapphire Beach was just outstanding! I saw sea turtles there, But so too was it great at Coki beach, Megan’s Bay, and most every spot on Saint Johns!! You must try one of Boise’s Daiquiri drinks at Coki Beach while visiting there! Saint Johns is only a 20 or 30-minute ferry ride. I highly recommend taking the Ferry over there to enjoy some of the most exclusive beaches in the world!! Nightlife is just right down the road at Duffy’s Love Shack in Red Hook, if you want to have some fun. But be careful not to over indulge. After 11 its 2-1 drinks! It will ruin all the great snorkeling and daily activities that are to be had.

I was very pleased with this condo and highly recommend it to family and friends.

I will definitely be vacationing there again soon!!

“great view. minor issues”

We love St. Thomas, this was our 2nd trip back and we booked 241 Barbados through VRBO. Bill Sands was easy to deal with. The place has a really beautiful view, the tradewinds that blow through the unit were remarkable! We didn't have to use the ac at all. They have an issue with the shower though which really made it hard for us. They use a tankless system and have some way to turn the water on to keep it warm throughout the shower... but for us it kept going from scolding hot to freezing cold. the directions are simple and I am not stupid but it was just not working. I called the mgr after the first night and she gave me some pointers but those did not work either. They had a guest journal in the room and I read others had the same issues. The bed sheets smelled like mildew and I woke up with bites. Not mosquito bites which I also told the mgr, so she had the sheets replaced the next day. I was still waking up with bites allover. Although we didn't come to the islands to watch TV, at night before we go to sleep we like having it on, I don't know whether it was the cable or what but the signal kept going out which was annoying when we were trying to relax to some tv before bed.

Other than these things. We had a great time, however I don't think I would stay here again. It's a further walk away from the beach also. If you can handle these minor things, then it's the perfect place. The east end of the island is definitely where I would stay.

Do go to St. John. Do rent a jeep if you're an adaptable driver. It's way worth it not having to spend time wondering where or when to get a taxi. DO go to "the little cabin in the woods" It's been open for 3 weeks, Tina was a pleasant treat we had a really great time at her bar. You wont find it on a map, it's off RTE 38 just before red hook. Tell her the newlyweds from dc sent you! We've been on the island twice and still haven't seen everything we wanted to. We will be back!

“Great snorkeling and iguanas”

I highly recommend Sapphire Village. We stayed in rm. 241, Barbados building, which has spectacular views, is nicely furnished, spacious, clean, and well-suited to our family of four - our kids are ages 6 & 8. We loved the convenience of the upper-level pool, which is just steps from the unit, allowing them to swim right after breakfast and again after touring or the beach. The beautiful beach offered great snorkeling, for the kids and adults - which is why we chose Sapphire Bay in the first place. Food at Duffy's and Fungees was superb - tasty Caribbean fare. We brought in yummy Caribbean take-out from Food Center supermarket, just a mile away, which is where we stocked up on staples. Red Hook is a nice town with good restaurants and shops. Great scenery, great weather, great memories.
