“After a day of travel my wife almost cried when we first entered the room.”

Upon entering our room my first thoughts were, "This place is a dump!". We were immediately checking for a different room. There were no other rooms available. We then considered moving to another hotel but we were just not familiar with the area.
The room seemed clean but in poor condition. The furnishings were extremely worn and dingy from years of use. The label on the box springs was faded, dirty and worn to the point it was unreadable. The sliding glass doors and screens were very difficult to open. The railing on the balcony did have large rust spots almost completely through the metal. There appeared to be mold growing on the ceiling by the air conditioning. Tiles on the floor and in the bathroom had been replaced with unmatched pieces and the caulking was terrible. It took a while to get hot water for a shower.

To be fair we did see that a number of rooms were being remodeled, and we did see things like new light fixtures on the grounds. On the other hand I also saw electrical panels rusted and partially coming out of the walls and also some of the grounds were overgrown and unkept. When I went to check out the pool it was locked up. The WIFI did seem to work pretty well and was free.

Some staff were very friendly and helpful while others were not. We asked for a second key when we checked in and never got it. There is no safe in the room and the lock boxes at the front desk are small. However after a few days I was no longer worried. The restaurant, which is on the beach, is more of a bar and grill for breakfast and lunch.
The food and service were average.

On several nights we had some noisy neighbors. The front desk shuts down after 11pm so I am not sure who you would call. To be fair I read somewhere that the hotel does not guarantee it to be quiet.

We also got ate up by bugs. It was so bad in our room that we put OFF on in the room and before sleeping.

I don't mean to slam the hotel because it looks like they are moving in the right direction. We had a good time on St Croix despite our experiences. I just want the reader to be aware there is at least one bad room still there.

Just returned home after spending a week at the Hotel on the
Cay. What a disaster! Outdated and dirty rooms. The hotel looks like it was built in the 50's with no updates since then.

St Croix is beautiful and we had a great time off the resort. Beautiful beaches, great shopping!

Please avoid this hotel!

Thank you, NewYorkSusan56, for your feedback. You are completely accurate that our hotel was built in the 1950's! Hotel on the Cay is a timeless treasure that was rumored to be the inspiration for the Herman Wouk book "Don't Stop the Carnival."

Our rooms are properly maintained and cleaned by our professional housekeeping staff. While your comment of "dirty rooms" is concerning to me, I am confident that your individual room, as well as those of fellow guests, were properly maintained. I hope you had a chance to meet with our General Manager before feeling that multiple rooms were dirty.

We appreciate the opportunity to serve you and hope that St. Croix will be calling your name the next time you think of travel!

“Could be great”

First of all if you are staying here make sure and arrive to the island during daylight or take a taxi from the airport. My flight landed at 9pm, found Christiansted fine but was fully expecting some sort of sign pointing in the direction of the ferry. The hotel is very hard to see at night, and one has no clue where to catch the ferry without some sort of sign. Luckily I sight of what possibly looked like a ferry boat and after waving my arms for 25 minutes the driver finally saw me.

Also, they have NO parking, you must park downtown, which is a bigger pain then I anticipated also. The towels in my room where obviously unwashed, dirty, and wet still. Luckily I brought a beach towel with me because nobody was at the front desk to give me a towel. The hotel is very run down, but has so much potential. It could be so great. The location is really neat, and the ferry boat runs constantly during the day.

I was a little disgusted by the towel thing, but overall I might consider staying here again just because it is so unique and it appears they may begin to invest some money into fixing the place up.

Also, the wireless internet is spotty at best. If you have business to attend to I would not stay here.

I appreciate your review of our hotel. Indeed we do not have parking available as we are located on a private island with a passenger ferry only. However, with a quick phone call, our helpful front desk staff can point guests in the right direction to either park their car in town or to arrange for a private transfer from the airport to our hotel.

While I cannot specifically comment about your towels as I was not there to verify the condition, I can assure future guests that our towels are laundered and guest rooms are stocked with fresh ones after room servicing.

We are pleased to offer wireless internet service around the property. However, like other hotels on the island, brief service interruptions are common. I am sorry for your inconvenience.

The Hotel on the Cay team look forward to your return visit!

The Hotel is not overly plush, nut is very adequate. They are remodeling all the bathrooms.
The hotel is a 1 minute ferry ride from all the Christiansted dining spots and recreational facilities.
The staff was very helpful and prompt fulfilling requests. Nice beach with fairly good snorkeling on site.

Thanks so much for your kind words! We're glad you stayed with us and look forward to your return visit.

Yes, we are working on the bathrooms with an anticipated competion in mid-2012. There is no disruption to any guest activities. It's another way we're enhancing the guest experience at the Hotel on the Cay!

“Good place to lime and be sublime!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2011

If you want a nice lazy vacation with a beautiful view, then this place is for you. It's just a 5 minute ferry ride over to the big island of St. Croix, so there is lot's to do as well. The snorkeling off the beach is not that interesting, but the water is nice and clear for swimming.
Don't be in a hurry for anything at the restauant as the service is very slow. Breakfast doesn't start until 8 and they might start making the coffee by 8:15 if you are lucky. My advice is to bring your own coffee and filters, and make it in your room. There is a microwave and a toaster oven, so you can make bagels too. They take you grocery shopping the 1st day for $7 taxi, but there is a 2.50 taxi that goes to the Pueblo as well. There is also a convenience store at the resort, and in town, within walking distance. Any taxis in town on the main drag that are on the move will stop if you flag them down. Just ask if they are the 2.50 taxi.
The overall maintenance of the place is very poor, but it was fairly clean, and I did not see any bugs. You don't need too many clothes. 2 bathing suits, coverups, and something to wear to dinner. Don't wear your bathing suit or short, shorts into town. Be respectful of the locals. Say good morning, good afternnon and good night for greetings.
