“wouldn't be my first choce”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 March 2011

First the good: My room was very clean - I saw almost no bugs (aside from mosquitos); breakfast was tasty, local homestyle cooking; room had good tv, AC and a small fridge; good wireless internet is included in the price; location is lovely, with a great view from the deck.

Not so good: rooms feel grungy and unfinished with grout not fully removed from tile and with bare fluorescent lightbulbs; the remote control didn't work on the AC, so the temp couldn't be adjusted (the staff person just shrugged and said, "that's how it is"); windows didn't have screens and had louvered glass, so mosquitoes got in, giving me many bites; (for me, this was the worst) their coffee urn broke! so there was no fresh coffee! only instant! and when I asked about the coffee the staff person gestured to the instant and said "there". When they had fresh coffee, it was pretty good.

Overall, I would say that the owners took on this project of renovating this hotel and didn't realize how much work it would be. The staff seemed unpleasant and unhappy with their lot.

If one is desperate and/or looking for something inexpensive, this is tolerable, but it wouldn't be my first choice. h

“Pleasant, home-style hotel”

After I read the reviews, I was really worried about my stay but I had no need to be. Alicia's is a friendly, home style hotel. It is not the Hilton or the Hyatt but does what it says on the tin. It provides a comfortable night stay close to Port of Spain in a clean environment.

The rooms themselves were spacious and were cleaned every day. Towels were replaced every day (two towels in our case). When we complained about the noise from the air conditioning unit, this was fixed the very next day.

The staff were very friendly and accommodating and did not hesitate to provide us help or items we requested. The hotel is located at the top of Lady Chancellor Hill but there is a 24 7 shuttle which takes you to the bottom of the hill, from where it is possible to get a maxi to St Anns and to Port of Spain.

Breakfast was included, and was adequate with local breakfast (bake, saltfish, smoke herring) featuring on many occasions. We also had free high speed internet which was very useful for skype and the like.

The staff (especially Donna) were very friendly and accommodating- we used the pool - it was clean and inviting. All in all, a lovely stay.

“Simple and relaxing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 September 2009

I went to Trinidad for my brother's funeral. I had previously stayed at Alicia's Guest House. That was fine. It could have been cleaner, but for a cheap quality place it was ok. Alicia's Palace is a couple steps up. The rooms were clean and comfortable, not fancy. The service was friendly. The food was great, especially breakfast. The best thing is the location, overlooking Port of Spain and the rainforest. The worst thing is climbing those steps to my room with a suitcase. I would deffinitely stay there again. I felt relaxed, even though I'm used to 4 star plus hotels in America and Latin America. I'm from Trinidad, so I found it homey and welcoming, romantic even.

“Could be a beautiful hotel, but not for those want to be close to town!”

9 of us stayed at this hotel and thoroughly enjoyed being here. However, even though the rooms are big they are basic and the bathroom left a lot to be desired. But that aside, we had a neat balcony, a pool that my companions enjoyed and a restaurant where the cook was very obliging. We would tell her what we would like to eat and she would prepare it - the hotel was pretty empty as we were there out of season. We enjoyed the place, spent most nights on the terrace drinking our own drinks and no one bothered us. The view was lovely. A word of caution, this hotel is on a steep climb and a car is essential to getting around. They do have a shuttle service but that does not take you into the heart of town, just down the hill and near the park. It is what it is, a bed & breakfast kind of place.
